Prima Facie Day!

865

Prima facie day is here!  Neil Doncaster spent weeks telling us that the SPL had yet to establish if Rangers had a prima facie case to answer in connection with the alleged illegal registration of players.  Today he confirmed to the SPL board and the media that they do indeed have a case to answer.

Rangers Employee Benefit Trusts have been the source of considerable controversy since 2010 when it emerged that HMRC had taken action against the club, at the time claiming in the region of £24m.  EBTs had been recorded on Rangers accounts for a decade without much comment, so there was no reason to assume the club had made payments to players out-with the oversight of the football authorities.

On 22 February this year Celtic Quick News asked the question, were these EBT payments recorded with the SFA, or did Rangers hide them?  There was little reason for the club to hide them, unless, perhaps, they had something to else hide, which was beginning to look the case.

Today we have our answer.  Whatever is left of what some regard to be Rangers FC will be subject to some of the most severe disciplinary procedures levelled in the history of football.  Appropriate penalties for subverting the game for over a decade are impossible to define.

Celtic fans are not the only ones to lose from this illegal registration of players but they suffered significantly.  Five league titles went to Rangers, in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  All of these titles will be stripped from Rangers records and awarded to Celtic.

You can look forward to 12-in-a-row day soon, which is simply, CHAMPION!

Can’t agree mate, take the titles from them. It will kill their fans, their refs and their friends in the SFA and media. No brainer personally.

  3. It’s very worrying when clubs come out and use words like ‘complexity’.

Motherwell for example say something like: “supporters are saying that it’s a choice between money/allowing newco into SPL or Sporting integrity…but it’s more complex than.”

For “complex” read “compromise”. The translation of compromise is: “We will listen to supporters to make it look like we care about old fashioned notions of human decency & natural justice…but the plain truth is we couldn’t care less…all we are interested in is continuing business as usual folks- that’s the bottom line. Once we’ve voted in the cheats we will later on pretend to care about so-called sporting integrity by making up a few cursory penalties.”

Motherwell. St Johnstone. Caley. I reckon they will all definitely vote in favour of new club.

St Mirren. Ross Co. D United.

Celtic. Hibs. Aberdeen. All will certainly vote “No Chance.”

Kilmarnock are in a class of their own. Pure naked hunnery. Johnstone is an utter disgrace & is completely without any moral integrity whatsoever.

Hearts? Thought the wee huns would see an opportunity to “replace” the big huns for a time…but that enigmatically vague & strangely ambigious quote today was neither categorical nor very encouraging. Think they might be leaning towards “yes”.

    +++++

If Hector goes after ‘those who implemented the scheme’ and that includes Minty, then I think we should be looking into it too, although, given the straits that MIH are currently in, I’m not too sure I’d be overly comfortable stiffing a business being propped up by the tax payer.

In saying that, utterly cleaning Minty out would be good.

  10. The element I worry about is the lobbying of Green & Co- how will the more craven chairmen vote once they have been exposed to the hollow promises, threats, blackmail etc of the Sevco set?

  11. Aaaaaaargh. Report on BBC news. Ragers have to wait 2 weeks to see if they will get back into the SPL. Rangers are in the process of being liquidated and Sevco, who’ve never been in any league never mind the SPL, are applying to join. Why can’t they get basic facts right?

Doc/nohunlover – we should be able to claim that none of our titles were tainted in any way. I just can’t accept any titles/cups reclaimed from that shower.

  16. In which I try to explain some details about the July 4 meeting; suggest why Rangers PLC can vote on Sevco Rangers; clarify precisely what the SPL members are considering; and what this has to do with the ongoing EBT investigation.

As matters stand, it looks as if the SPL is treating Rangers FC as an ongoing entity, which is bad news for Mr Green as it seems there are still lots of things to be done which have not been carried out yet, and the season looms ever closer.

It also leaves the possibility of chaos if Dunfermline, Dundee or both, challenge the actions of the SPL as ultra vires!

As things stand, do the SPL know what they are doing?

I’d be surprised if there is a ‘vote’ on 4 July.

Sevco cannot meet the conditions for membership.

Dykeman Doncaster should present a report to that effect, thereby saving his chairmen. Whether he does or not is open to question given his performance so far.

If Dykeman reports that they can be admitted I would still expect there to be no vote. Any action will be recorded as full consensus.

In terms of action, the mis-deeds belong to oldco and so only oldco can be sanctioned/punished. It should be expelled if it is still alive. At that point the ‘share’ should return and not be transfered.

In the unlikely (fixed fraud) event that sevco is deemed eligible and is admitted, why should it be punished?

Either it is Rangers or it is not. I would contend that any company using Ibrox, the term ‘Rangers’, playing in blue and white with a lion badge saying Aye Ready, wants to be Rangers. Whilst it is not but wants to be perceived as such, it should then be prepared to ‘own’ the disbenefits as well as the benefits. At that point (which we should never actually get to) then entry requirements that are painful and onerous for many years should be considered and applied.

    Interesting few weeks.

Titles are only tainted if the cheats are allowed to hold the title.

If they are stripped and the title redistributed they are no longer tainted, redistribution restore the integrity of the competition rather than dilutes it.

They wouldn’t declare them though, we have been honest about it by publishing them in the accounts yet we must be punished and held accountable for it? An administration error could be our downfall if that is even the case.

  25. Macjay1,

Back late due to eldest son arriving from abroad with new wife (no, he didn’t have a previous): probably less coherent than usual for same reason.

I don’t know the whole story about the Irish/Spanish property bubbles, but so far as I understand, it’s as follows.

When the Euro came into being, the Spanish economy was growing vigourously & the Irish very fast. For purely domestice reasons, both needed higher interest rates than those set in Frankfurt. On top of that, the nougties property boom in the UK spilled over into both countries via holidaymakers/expats buying there. Had Spain & Ireland been free to regulate their own economies, they could have kept the situation under control: as it was, membership of the Eurozone deprived them of that possibility. The unontrolled booms continued until they collapsed, leaving both countries with huge numbers of unsold houses & building industries on their knees.

“Little” Greece on its own cannot threaten the the whole Eurozone: were it to drop out, the exchange value of the Euro might rise fractionally (making the remaining peripheral members a tad more uncompertitive). What threatens the Zone is fear that other members might follow Greece. IMO that would be a good thing, provided the withdrawals/dissolution are prepared in advance: the Euro is unsustainable so long as its different members have such widely differing economies & politics. The simplest solution, of course, might be for Germany to leave as its present prowess is what makes its partners uncompetitive.

Ernie touched on the 2nd point that I’ve made: I hope that what I’ve written is of some use to him as well as to Macjay & other CQN readers – sorry if it lacks inspiration. I’ve derived some amusement today from wondering whether FF is treating its readers to a similarly serious discussion.
