Prima Facie Day!

865

Prima facie day is here!  Neil Doncaster spent weeks telling us that the SPL had yet to establish if Rangers had a prima facie case to answer in connection with the alleged illegal registration of players.  Today he confirmed to the SPL board and the media that they do indeed have a case to answer.

Rangers Employee Benefit Trusts have been the source of considerable controversy since 2010 when it emerged that HMRC had taken action against the club, at the time claiming in the region of £24m.  EBTs had been recorded on Rangers accounts for a decade without much comment, so there was no reason to assume the club had made payments to players out-with the oversight of the football authorities.

On 22 February this year Celtic Quick News asked the question, were these EBT payments recorded with the SFA, or did Rangers hide them?  There was little reason for the club to hide them, unless, perhaps, they had something to else hide, which was beginning to look the case.

Today we have our answer.  Whatever is left of what some regard to be Rangers FC will be subject to some of the most severe disciplinary procedures levelled in the history of football.  Appropriate penalties for subverting the game for over a decade are impossible to define.

Celtic fans are not the only ones to lose from this illegal registration of players but they suffered significantly.  Five league titles went to Rangers, in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  All of these titles will be stripped from Rangers records and awarded to Celtic.

You can look forward to 12-in-a-row day soon, which is simply, CHAMPION!

croppybhoy-agree mate, but when the rules get re-written they will have to be water tight for future cases. You’re right, any other team would have been binned asap.

  4. Hen1rik,

not too sure what we have to gain by coming out and saying anything now,

it could be seen as trying to bully other clubs in making their decisions,

what we should be doing in private is telling those who vote for newco that we aint taking away tickets and will actively discourage fans from taking tickets themselves,

with teams voting no to newco

we could also where possible increase our allocation at away games, where possible,to minimise any shortfall from the newco not visiting their grounds,

@bellacaledonia: Article 6 & 14 of SPL’s own rules mean that Rangers should have no vote. Please RT, this is Doncasters absolute lie.

@bellacaledonia: 6. A Share may only be issued, allotted, transferred to or held by a person who is the owner and operator of a Club ….

@bellacaledonia: …and if a Member shall cease to be the owner and operator of a Club then such Member shall cease to be entitled to hold a Share.

If NL told us not to boycott away games last year there is no way our board will tell these clubs we won’t be taking tickets if you vote yes, just my opinion though and i could be wrong.

  9. Bit mystified by all this talking about how other clubs will vote.

Does anyone know for sure how Celtic will vote?

    I certainly don’t.

time to go before I say something I will regret hail hail to the bhoys

and bye bye to the dead team lurkers

  11. The Celtic Board know that a newco in the SPL, even with sanctions attached, is unacceptable to many in the Celtic support because:-

    1) There is no way they (fans of the dead club) will accept punishment commensurate with their crimes. They are already complaining about £160k and possible SC expulsion. They will only accept token point punishments (5-10 points) for a short period of less than a couple of seasons. Even if more stringent punishments were initially imposed, I would have no confidence that they would not be reduced or removed following appeals.

    2) Saddling newco with sanctions lends support to their rhetoric that newco is the continuation of oldco and has legitimate claim to their history, else why punish it for the sins of oldco?

    3) Playing in the SPL also supports the rhetoric of continued unbroken history and contrasts strongly with the fate suffered by previous liquidated clubs in Scotland; Third Lanark, Airdrieonians & Gretna.

My first preference has always been that they stay in the SPL and pay back all that they owe. That is never going to happen.

The nearest outcome to natural justice that we can impose is that they officially lose their history (changed name, new badge, zero honours prior to season 2012/13, and a different league to play in from that where oldco finished).

I feel Celtic and the other SPL clubs are being incredibly generous in offering these terms to the ingrates. Even banning them from senior football for 10 years would not get close to reflecting the harm they have caused these past 20 years.

All these actions will cause hurt to Celtic and other SPL clubs financially. Not taking these actions would lose us our soul and our reason for supporting a sporting competition.

There has been a really unhealthy attempt to collude with a soft landing for newco. The fractured trust between club owners and league administrators on one hand, and non- ex-Rangers fans of Scottish football on the other, will take a long time to re-build.

I cannot get too celebratory about titles and trophies being returned to rightful owners. Righteous it may be but it will never replace or re-create what we should have already experienced; the joy of winning them legitimately in sporting contest at the time they were up for grabs.

I seriously doubt that Carl Lewis can take as much pleasure and pride in his 1998 100m gold medal as he does in his 1984 and 1992 golds or even his other 1998 gold for long jump. That 88 100m gold medal had been worn and celebrated by a cheat before he inherited it. It may have been his by right but it must remain tainted to a sporting competitor. The legal winner, in such circumstances, is more legitimately a victim, than the deprived and disgraced cheat can claim to be.

I repeat. We are being incredibly generous in allowing the fans of the dead club to recreate a new club to follow in Scottish football. We are prepared to harm ourselves financially in order to do the right thing. To have our generosity met by their ingratitude and anger is sorely trying of my patience. They are not even interested in pretending to rehabilitate themselves.

  12. quonno,

Of course we will be voting no……. We have been the main victim of their cheating ……….

  16. How seriously do you think that the Celtic board will treat the views of the fans on this issue?

I ask this because as I understand it, sales of Celtic Season books has been pretty healthy.

  17. Rfc, in whatever form, has shown itself to be self serving and although that may be condemned it is understandable.

What is there to be said in defence of SFA/SPL? These bodies are meant to stand above the narrow interests of any club.

We are now at the stage where the SFA/SPL are now more deserving of the term ‘ Scotland’s Shame’.

  18. 67heaven,

dont doubt for a second we will vote no and i think we will have 4 or 5 others along with us.

    SFTB,

excellent post that mirrors my thoughts ,

only i would have had to start writing at half 8 to complete something so lengthy ;-))))

  19. Seeing the rumours that we have signed Hugo Rodellega. Not a bad acquisition if true considering he is out of contract.

You have always been my barometer of good Celtic supporter on here and i am glad you are now coming round to the light in that they should be taken out of the game all together.

I could not care if we got the trophies they cheated in (That would be 120 years worth) but I want them to lose the trophies. I want everyone of them with 5 stars to have to answer to that.

Shallow I know but then again why should I change a habit of a lifetime.

My big bit in this whole shambles outwith sevco is that for all of my life going to the games we always hear the ‘diddy clubs’ saying we and the huns have too much control now they have the opportunity to do both of us due to the huns incompetence and they are crapping it… If sevco get back in I hope that every Celtic supporter reminds these f’ers if they ever say we control the game.
