Prism of failure gives King chance to bring Newco down

680

After the failure to launch season ticket renewals at Ibrox in the wake of the Ramsdens Cup final last week, by Friday morning marketing staff, PR people, web designers and printers would all have been primed to press the button this morning, after the anticipated humbling of Dundee United in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Things started to go wrong later Friday, when Dave King popped up with an intervention.  King, who was a director of Original Rangers in the years up to and including their liquidation, appears intent on sending the Newco Rangers to an equally liquidated state.  Should we erect a statue to this guy?

For those of you in doubt, his latest questions to Newco Rangers board are priceless:

“Does the board agree it is unfair to ask fans to buy season tickets before they consider the business review?”

No club in the country is asked to submit business plans to supporters before asking them to renew season tickets.  What’s more, there is an assumption by King that spending plans should be expansive, exactly as they were at Original Rangers, when King & co presided over the club’s failure.

Newco’s (even newer) management should be allowed to match expenditure with income.  This is the message that fans should be asked to back, the days of empire are over.  Anyone who tries to undermine a breakeven strategy at Newco is practically ensuring another failure.

“Does the board agree that, given the present financial position of the club, it is appropriate to provide Ibrox Park and Murray Park as security against season ticket advances?”

This is an interesting one.  King suggests Newco offers Ibrox up as security (Murray Park is largely irrelevant).  If they are boxed into a corner and concede this one, those in a position to utilise that security, which in Dave King’s plan would be Dave King, would have an incentive to see Newco liquidated.

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it was in discussions to obtain finance that would be needed prior to the end of the current season?

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it provided public assurances to the fans that the club had sufficient cash to last until the end of the current season?”

King has been there before and will know more than most how financial forecasting works; there is a clue in the name, it’s forecasting.  If a company seeks contingency borrowing for less than 5% of its expenditure (or 2 weeks costs), earlier projections could not have been that far off.

None of this matters right now.  Newco’s manager failed to win two hugely important games and that is the prism through which fans will evaluate the performance of their club.  King could accuse them of being responsible for his own role in Original Rangers liquidation and some would believe him.

Season ticket sales are the most fundamental aspect to the health and wellbeing of every Scottish football club.  This is true even at Celtic, with or without Champions League revenue.  Ticket sales will have a greater impact on Celtic’s season ahead than Champions League qualification.

Right now some hedge funds and the Easdales own Ibrox.  Ideas of bully them into submission will fail, although it will be enormously entertaining.  Go for it, Dave, we’re 100% behind you.

    Good Morning,

Great debate on the songs of yesteryear and the habits of some when visiting Celtic Park,

The late Counsellor George Ryan ( St John Doyle ) and I had quite a few discussions about the idea of a real Celtic Choir like the ones that Gareth Malone coaches on the BBC.

We talked about a youth choir which forever changed as kids got older and new ones came in, and a senior choir which would sing “old” Celtic songs — like many of the folk songs mentioned that you used to hear on the terraces.

The idea was that you could actually go to hear concerts and the choir would have a place at Celtic Park on match days.

It never came to anything regrettably but the kind of songs that were mentioned were:

    The Holy Ground

    Hail Glorious St Patrick

    The Wild Rover

The Merry Ploughboy ( Possibly )

    We Shall not be moved

Remember the ’96 today and always. As I have said many times before, football, and supporting football, is meant to be fun and not about death, injury, grieving and policing and police cover ups.

The spirit that existed in Seville — that is what the name of the game should be — it’s why we wrote the book and collected all those mad and funny stories.

I was at Tynecastle in the Gorgie Road end when we sang American Pie, sun drenched day, we played in the yellow and green marking (the one that reminds me of a Prisoner’s uniform), Tommy Coyne scored that day, I was bit worse for wear but we strolled the game and at H-T we were in fine voice.

I’m pretty sure we lost 3-1 after being 1-0 up at half time.

I’m also pretty sue it rained later on.

The day Coyne scored a hat trick was the first game of the season and we were wearing the Hoops.

I could be wrong but it’s funny that sometimes even when we get defeated there is still some joy at the game. I think that is why most of us support Celtic. Winning is great but it’s about enjoying the day out as well.

  6. Not another songs debate! :-)

For those who haven’t scrolled back to last night, the debate started from the BTSport program and someone on it claimed, definitively, that it was at the Leeds 70 game that YNWA started to be sung by the Hoops support. I was hoping that the old-er bhoys would step forward and put that to bed……

    …and didn’t they just!!!

Some smashing posts and memories of those days are now out there for us all to enjoy.

As I posted although there was no alcohol, the Bhoy that ran the Bus knew what we did, there were the usual suspects, me being one. He knew us not suggesting that hoopy doo or anybody else that travelled, he did not know the non-members.

Right, off to take the Wife’s Car to one of patbhoy1888’s places to get two back Tyres. Got a great deal just before Christmas on the front two. If you haven’t been I would recommend it. I’m certain that we ended up losing that day after leading at half time.

The half time sing song was brilliant and I remember distinctly the horrible mob at the opposite giving their vitriolic ditties an airing in response.

The disproportionate and heavy handed policing were a sign of times to come.

    GCT,

I, too, remember that game. It was a cup game and whilst the crowd were serenading themselves, Rickson head the back into the game.

Don’t know who I was most angry with, the DJ or the crowd for not doing their job in roaring the team into the second half

YNWA should never carry over into game time.

I think I am correct in saying it was Ricksen who got that goal at the start of the second half. It made it 1-1 and John Hartson scored the winner. I believe it was a Scottish Cup tie.

That would be in the dark days of playing on a Sunday evening!

With nothing else on at that time, most pubs would show the match. As a result, alternative gatherings would take place at,for instance, the New Inn,and my favourite,The Cock Robin.

Glad so many enjoyed my first post. To answer a couple of posters I am not from Coatbridge but went to senior secondary there. As I had many friends in the town I used various Supporters buses for away games- Kirkwood, Whifflet St Marys, Phil Coles, Yogis. Great experience travelling on those buses. At that time there were not many books about Celtic so we had an oral history. I learned about great players and games from the past not by reading about them but by listening to older family members and guys on the buses. It was not just football we learned about. Listening to the songs on the buses (which were a lot more varied than what was sung on the terraces) helped stimulate my interest in Irish history. I remember one midweek game at Pittodrie when a group of us from school went up in Phil Coles bus. Bobby Lennox scored the only goal and we were all in good humour on the way home. Most of the older guys had had a few bevvies so after a while started to kip. As we had no school the next day (Easter Holidays) we decided to have our own sing song. To make it more interesting we decided that the songs had to be in a chronological order. So we started with the likes of O’Donnell Abu and worked our way through the 98 rebellion, the Fenians, Easter Rising, War of Independence, Civil War etc with occasional discussion/argument about things like was Kevin Barry before The Boys of Kilmichael. Considering none of us actually did Irish History formally at school we must have be a naturally gifted lot!

  29. 2 memories have been evoked in me of the songs we used to sing. First off, we moved as a primary school from Salamanca Street to Springfield Road in 1961. Miss Brogan, who was the best teacher I ever had, demanded that we sing Hail Glorious Saint Patrick the way we did in Church and not like they did over there, nodding towards Celtic Park, whose big pylons could be seen through the windaes. We were 11. Second of all, I remember us singing “We’re all in a green submarine” at Tynecastle on a beautiful summer’s day at the beginning of season 66/67 of happy memory.
