Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’

697

I listened to a Scottish Rugby podcast with Jason Leitch, recorded earlier this week, where they discussed the reasons that appear to lie behind why the Scottish Government in their treatment of football is out of step with European countries, like Germany, France, Netherlands and others, but in-step with the Westminster Government.

Professor Leitch rhetorically posed the question you and I have discussed recently, “Why can I go to the pub and I can’t go to Celtic Park.”  Through analogy, he explained that the Government were able to permit some activities, not all.  That has never been in dispute, during a pandemic, you cannot allow all activities.

What has not previously been confirmed is why the Scottish Government has shadowed the (frankly abysmal) pandemic response of Boris Johnson’s Westminster government, instead of acknowledging the clear and undisputed scientific evidence that drives public policy among our European peers.  Professor Leitch placed responsibility for this squarely with his political masters:

“How you then make choices between sport, versus retail, versus hospitality; that comes down to decision making, by politicians, taking the best advice they can from the financial people, the public health people, the social policy people and making choices.”

Clearly the Scottish Government listens to financial, public health and social policy people before making decisions, so do Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, this allows them to act sincere, it does not make them any good.  But when Europe takes one path, which is consistent with science, and Scotland follows Westminster, which has led to some of the highest rates of mortality in the world in both Scotland and the UK as a whole, we are entitled to ask, what is going on?

They do not have a different virus in Dortmund than we have in Glasgow.  In both places, it spreads significantly more indoors than out.  It is inhibited by adherence to clear and monitored hygiene and distancing rules, like those in place at football games across the Continent, and it spreads where consistent enforcement of these rules is unmonitored – like pubs.  The difference is the politicians, not the virus.

I know this is ‘just’ football, and our consequences are nothing like the care homes fiasco, but government policy needs to shape up pandemic response in all areas.  It is not easy, but if decisions are too onerous for people in Edinburgh to get their heads around, stop following a clown in London and watch what is happening in Europe: fewer deaths, fewer infections, industry specific responses.

What i found interesting was as we were leaving and the fans were talking about the game no one was slagging off Celtic, the talk was more “what do we need to do to play like that” I think they won the trophy that year and I seem to remember they weren’t a major force in Europe at the time but played us off the park.

I know you’re a aul yin like me, don’t know if you went down to the

friendly with Sunderland in the sixties, Slim Jim had just signed with them.

Celtic with big jock were on the march, they came out early and played one

touch football in a warm up much to everybody’s amazement.

Sunderland supporters who were very welcoming started clapping when it

was finished, much to my amazement lol.

During the game which Celtic won with goals to spare, the not so slim Jim

was seen shaking his head at his new teams attempts to stop this onslaught.

But he did get revenge when he came back to thems and completely dominated

a game at the midden much to my chagrin.

P.S I think Harry.. Harry was playing for the Makums as well that day.

johan cruyff and that great Ajax of 1971.They beat us 3-0 in Amsterdam.jock said in return at Hampden if we score by half time we are in there.alas i think it was 2nd half and we won 1-0.i recall Cruyff with very little backlift shooting from 30 yards- bang i only seen it coming back out of the post.

Rai who played for PSG was superb.the year before we stopped the cheat,we got beat home and away and they were rightly applauded of the park.a superb player.

Stojkovic was a player i believe we made enquiries about.a superb player, alas the iron curtain was down in these prebosman and iron curtain days.

prosinescki was a great player who interrupted his smoking to stroll about the pitch.

in the modern day xavi and iniesta were a joy.

    and he rightly got applauded.what a team,what a workrate,what a player.

The barca triumvirate of Messi, neymar and suarez had me looking thro my fingers as they tore thro us.pinging balls all over the place, instant control, criss crossing beautifully.i just had to sit back and relax and relish what i was watching.it was special.

    many have graced the park.

Whilst out walking earlier I spotted a real unusual funeral car outside the local undertakers,an old vintage motor converted type and a couple of limo’s behind it with the families ready to make their way.In the funeral car were three large wreaths SON,DAD,BROTHER……..was thinking having gone to all this fuss and expense why put 3 people in the one coffin.

I am well, thankyou for asking.

your posts are sunshine, especially in the “dark” daftee hours.

Trying to think of a real answer for you but although born into a Celtic family (sorta*)have only really followed Teh Hoops since the Zombies started their (tainted) nine. I think pretty much the whole Barcelona Team that we beat 2-1 was the best Ive seen, suppose that dosnt count either. lol

I really enjoyed my team, The Perth Glory playing against my “big” team when Celtic came over to Perth, Western Australia. A few thousand of us walked a few kilometers from Perth Oval(NIB STadiun) to James street in Northbridge after the match. A big Celtic party in downtown sunny OZ.

    Trivia

Marco di Sousa and Ayrton Inacio, two Brazilian inside forwards both from Sao Paulo were flown in by Celtic for trials. They arrived on 5th August. The two 24 year olds would spend 2 months in trial assessment with Celtic. Their arrival came about when the club were contacted by two Portugese agents at the time of the Friendly game in Vienna at the end of the previous season.

Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, McBride and Hughes were chosen for the Glasgow Select side to face Chelsea in the Charity game at Hampden on 11th August.

Jim Baxter makes his much publicised debut for Sunderland against Celtic. The ex Scotland manager McColl was now manager at Sunderland – so the ex-Scotland manager and the temporary SDcotland manager faced off against each other!

Bobby Murdoch and John Hughes stole the show

Estimated 10,000 Celtic fans travelled south on a hot summers dayand a number of arrests were made inside the ground.

Celtic fans taunt Baxter with chants of ‘Easy-Easy-Easy !’

In a last minute change, future Celt Harry Hood turns out for Sunderland

Celtic play in a smart new all green strip with white numbers on shorts

    Review

Celtic were so dominant that it could have been a double figure scoreline. Jock Stein’s Bhoys gave a taste of things to come in the years ahead as Jim Baxter’s Sunderland were blown away. Bertie Auld came on for the last 10 minutes after McBride injured a knee, with John Hughes going to centre forward and Bertie taking the outside left position.

Thought Harry .. Harry was playing that day, well should have said

    Just for the young Tims.

The Makums were from Sunderland on the river Tyne.

The Takums were from Newcastle on the opposite side of the Tyne.

And in the shipyards down there the Sunderland side made the pieces

and the Geordies on the other side tack welded them together.

Think that’s as well as I could explain it, but think far more Celtic minded

  19. Bamboo ( and others) might be interested in Stephen King`s ” The Stand” playing on the Horror Channel at the moment. Here is the blurb:

” Post-apocalyptic fantasy starring Rob Lowe and based on Stephen King’s novel. When a government-created super-flu decimates the population, an epic fight between good and evil begins.”

” I remember telling my dad they were a lot fitter, stronger and faster than us all over the park. Physically they were miles ahead, it really stood out.”

Why do you think they were `a lot fitter, stronger and faster than us` ?

  21. The most impressive player I saw at CP was Girgios Delikaris of Olympiacos who played us off the park in 1974 when his team drew 1:1 with us before knocking us out in Greece. He looked like george Best and played like Gianni Rivera. Very cultured, unhurried but full of flair and defence splitting passes. He impressed Big Jock enough to try to sign him in the summer of 1975.

He seems to have been a troubled soul as he left Olympiacos to cross the great divide and signed for Panathanaikos in 1978. The fans there never accepted him and he retired from football at age 29, slipping into obscurity in his private life even though he came 4h in the Greek vote in Uefa’s 50th anniversasry poll in November 2003. The Greek vote went ot Vasilis Hatzipangis of Iraklis, a Uzbek born son of Greek refugees who was only ever capped twice for Greece, because he was deemed ineligible as he had played for the USSR at U-21 level.

Guess who won the Scotland nomination in that Poll? – clue – it wasn’t a Celtic player.

There was, however, A Celtic player who did win the Golden Player nominations, from the Swdish FA.

No Huns were harmed in the nominations process, theough the name of Laudrup did malke the Danish nominations- Michael

  22. Just noticed red card is doing the Luxembourg game – isn’t he one of the MPs who won’t travel to Westminster.

  23. Do you think Jason Leitch reads CQN?

“Scottish Government official, Professor Jason Leitch has today suggested that when fans do return to football stadiums, those living nearby the ground will be the first allowed in.

Speaking on BBC Radio programme Off the Ball, when questioned around the matter, Leitch believes that those living within the postcode, will be the first allowed back inside Celtic Park.

“I think so. Now that is controversial because people would not like the fact, they had been excluded from that.

“We are not going to go from zero to thirty thousand, so we are going to go from 0 to 750 to 1500 to 3000. It is going to move in stages like in other parts of the world.”

Supporters have been waiting months, without much update around the matter of returning to football grounds.

Whatever way that the first to go back is decided, is going to be a controversial one. Everyone wants to be back in there so it is understandable that those living further away would be frustrated with that decision.

Before it comes to that though, Scottish football does still need the green light to allow fans back.”

  24. I see the old Scottish Cabal are talking about the season ending and what to do in said event.

We need to get as many points on the board starting next week.
