Profitable transfer fantasies

761

Neil Lennon did us all a favour yesterday by dismissing rumours that he was targeting a striker from Vitoria Guimaraes as nonsense this early in the transfer window. The guidelines are set for your summer ahead. As well as being nonsense, though, it is also profitable news fodder; just think of the amount of advertising which has been wrapped around this story.

What does this teach us? I reckon that the least informed contributions left on the CQN comments page are about as reliable as what passes for mainstream ‘news’. There is a good possibility that even the player didn’t know Celtic’s position on him until it was reported yesterday.

Celtic will be trailing up to 30 players at any point in time, all of whom will have passed one level of scrutiny, but at least 20 of whom would never pass all levels, even if a deal was possible. When players are being scrutinised the position of the club will always be to show courteous interest in proceedings. You and I know what this really amounts to.

    tommysbhoy,

Good news from Alex Thompson. Let’s hope he follows it through. Sets one up for a hip happy day.

  3. Just wondering, should Chuckles not have declared his share sell at the launch seeing as the deal was made 2 months before?

  4. So the new sevco “kingpin” was involved with viz comic. Really? I can see the attraction for him. Seeing his comic characters in the flesh.

He’ll probably get loads of inspiration for new ones.

Already we’ve got Biffa Bacon, and his violent psychopathic family. Rascist bigot Billy Britain. Camberwick Greggs.

Wacky Rascists. There must be more.

Would rather give our own 18-19 year old attacking players like Antjic, Herron, George a run in the team than sign someone that age. Harris may well be one for the future and should be monitored by our scouts over a longer period than the couple of months he’s been in the Hibs team. Maybe worth a gamble next year if he continues to improve.

In the SPL Russell & Mackay Steven are the only 2 worth buying at the moment. Good age to get them (23 & 22), a few year experience in the SPL, can improve with good coaching and playing with better players, potentially large sell on value.

I would add Griffiths to these 2 but his off field antics mean we wouldn’t touch him. Good player though.

  10. googybhoy, You asked me yesterday if I intended going to Celtic/Liverpool game in Dublin, the answer is yes all things being OK I will be there.

  12. Why gave a youth set up if all we do is buy other teams youngsters.?

We don’t give youngsters enough opportunities due to the mumpers and moaners who would destroy a career before it starts.

U/20 trophies mean nothing if our players don’t make the step up.

Im sure mr lawell must question the financial implications.

These bhoys need experience. That is a reason lots of kids go too Aberdeen, Dundee United etc.. they know they will get 1ST team games.

Billy McNeill said in an interview that Jock didn’t drink at all. Billy said that he and some of the other players would try to get Jock to take a drink to help him relax but Jock’s reply to that was, “if I was to take a drink do you think it will make me a better man?”

  18. Johnny Russell not for me he would be an SPL squad player and I don’t believe the negative stories that suggest Hooper is away either bring me Nakamura mark 2 so that We can build on last year’s CL successfully

Totally agree with this but can you imagine the greetin faced brigade if we get KO’d playing a team of youngsters?

The manager/club should make it clear at the start of the season that in the LC we will be playing our development team to see how far they go.

  20. Kayal

Thats my point. The wingers would win. Not as if we get big crowds at league cup matches anyway.

  21. Wouldn’t say no to Russell, he would be a good squad player but if we have designs on realing building a team to challenge for Champions League we need to be setting the bar higher.

  22. To add my tuppence worth about Shaun Maloney’s success at Wigan we shaun always was an exceptional talent

He never got the protection he deserved in Scotland and was deliberately targeted by the SPL hatchet men hence the lengthy spells on the treatment table

I vividly remember when Gordon Strachan brought him back…he made his reappearance as a 2nd half substitute against Kilmarnock a game I remember in august 2009 because I was one of the lucky CQNers invited to the hospitality lounge

As we Shaun made his entrance I looked across to see Shunsuke Nakamura applauding

you cant target the removal of the loyal support for over 20 years (Jungle Jims & GB) and then not expect the monaing minnies (i.e the rest) to not compalin about “bang for buck” its so tory and self defeating. The Celtic tories dont have anyone to learn from either. They make there bed they must lie in it.

Am I right in thinking you live in Japan and if so are you anywhere near Ichikawa??

I am heading there later in the year December probably and was wondering what kind of weather to expect and what clobber to bring etc..

    Hail Hail

  25. There were times when arguably wee Shaun was more effective than Aiden McGeady – Shaun certainly took a better free kick than Aiden

  26. I live 10min from Ichikawa would you be coming at the same time as the Token Tim ?

  27. Pity we couldn’t get Maloney into the physical condition he is now.

He’s built more like a rugby player now.

    Euro Under 21 Championships .

    England 0———-Italy 1..

England were dire . Outclassed and out passed by a very good Italian team . I was surprised at how technically and tactically inept England were.. Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne was great . PSG’s Marco Verratti was great.. Most of the England team looked like carthorses in comparison.

Post match stuff featured Glen Hoddle talking about ” an embarrassing gulf in class ”

Italian post match man said ———-

“if this is the future of England, they don’t have one. Can’t keep the ball, can’t pass the ball”-

    Israel 2 ——-Norway 2 .

    2 dire teams.
