Profitable transfer fantasies

761

Neil Lennon did us all a favour yesterday by dismissing rumours that he was targeting a striker from Vitoria Guimaraes as nonsense this early in the transfer window. The guidelines are set for your summer ahead. As well as being nonsense, though, it is also profitable news fodder; just think of the amount of advertising which has been wrapped around this story.

What does this teach us? I reckon that the least informed contributions left on the CQN comments page are about as reliable as what passes for mainstream ‘news’. There is a good possibility that even the player didn’t know Celtic’s position on him until it was reported yesterday.

Celtic will be trailing up to 30 players at any point in time, all of whom will have passed one level of scrutiny, but at least 20 of whom would never pass all levels, even if a deal was possible. When players are being scrutinised the position of the club will always be to show courteous interest in proceedings. You and I know what this really amounts to.

I had a mate at Uni who turned on / tuned in / dropped oot and then went to live in an anarchist / vegan commune on Eel Pie Island .

He was a big Brentford fan . I often went to Griffin Park with him . Whilst at the fitba the anarchist /vegan would have a meat pasty.[or 2 ] Post match we’d head for the boozer [ I paid / the anarchist never had any money ].

I lost contact with him for a while but we met up again in the mid 80s . We arranged to attend a Freight Rover Final at Wembley .[ Brentford /Wigan ] Arranged to meet him at Goodge Street Tube . The anarchist turned up in a suit , fresh from a shift in a big city bank HQ .

    That’s life.

I’d definitely take Russell. He has pace, good technical ability and can finish. He is also naturally left-sided, which gives us something different in that area of the field. I think he could play up front, just behind or even on the left of a front three. So he would give us a lot of options.

At the price being quoted it’s very low-risk. By all accounts the boy wants to come here, which is better than players we have who sound like they don’t want to be here. Get the lad in!

  13. I think we have sufficient resources at the club to win the SPL even if we lose Hooper and BV. However if we want players who can take us to the CL group stages and do well there we need to sign players of a higher quality than Johnny Russell – good SPL though he is.

Summa – it was meant in jest -clearly not a success.

Apologies for any offence, certainly none intended.

SofTunis – not long after I qualified I worked with a good bloke, died in the wool Brentford supporter.

Once a year he’d go down from Glasgow to Carlisle to see the Bees at Brunton Park, only chance he got.

    Whereabouts are you??

  17. A poster said earlier, on another page .

That celtic should have a smaller squad, but with better players.

I think we need a decent sized squad (obviously with good to great players , if pos) because we get so many injuries to our players, due to rafs not protecting them.

So unfortunately we need to carry a bigger pool of players than other teams.

  18. This amount of coverage to Jonny Russell really is odd: a decent prospect but that is about it. The malcontents on this blog especially seem eager to sign him. Odd.

Have not seen anything on the blog which could be considered to be “racist” towards the Irish. Yet there are some here who seem to have strange attitudes towards Irish players. I am always happy when we sign a good Irish player as we are an Irish club in my opinion.

I understand what you say about getting checked for prostate cancer. I’d generally agree, although I just want to say that there is a debate in the medical world at the moment about screening for prostate cancer. There are some very reasonable medics who reckon that the amount of false positives produced may mean that a lot of men go through the stress of testing for and dealing with a cancer which may not lead to anything (as the saying goes, more men die WITH prostate cancer than OF prostate cancer). I’m not saying that one shouldn’t be screened, I’m just saying that it is worth knowing the potential benefits and drawback of prostate cancer. This parallels the debate in breast cancer screening, where it seems that screening in your 40s is not generally held to do more harm than good (although some organisations still recommend this).

According to Wikipedia, the “American Cancer Society, in its cancer screening guidelines says that it does not support routine screening for prostate cancer. This is because the benefits are unclear or unproven. Instead it recommends that doctors discuss the pros and cons of testing and that men should be offered the possibility of a DRE and a PSA test if they are over 50 with a life expectancy of more than 10 years (or over 40 if they are in a high risk group). It recommends that men should sit down with their physician and weigh the benefits and risks of the test before a decision is made”.

So it’s complex. And you need to weight the benefits. Certainly as you become older it becomes more imperative. I say that as I’m a 58 year old who had a prostate tumour removed in February. Take it from me, once someone says the word “cancer” to you, you need a real presence of mind to decide objectively on whether or not you should be treated.

There was an article about Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore being hot for Brentford FC . Stated reason was a connection between a super trendy Hollywood restaurant and somebody at Brentford . .Article claimed that that Cameron and Drew always go to see the Bees whenever they are in London . Maybe they’ll pop in to see the Tic

Remember being at a Brentford /Watford game . Elton John was treated to 90 minutes of extreme political incorrectness.
