Profitable transfer fantasies

761

Neil Lennon did us all a favour yesterday by dismissing rumours that he was targeting a striker from Vitoria Guimaraes as nonsense this early in the transfer window. The guidelines are set for your summer ahead. As well as being nonsense, though, it is also profitable news fodder; just think of the amount of advertising which has been wrapped around this story.

What does this teach us? I reckon that the least informed contributions left on the CQN comments page are about as reliable as what passes for mainstream ‘news’. There is a good possibility that even the player didn’t know Celtic’s position on him until it was reported yesterday.

Celtic will be trailing up to 30 players at any point in time, all of whom will have passed one level of scrutiny, but at least 20 of whom would never pass all levels, even if a deal was possible. When players are being scrutinised the position of the club will always be to show courteous interest in proceedings. You and I know what this really amounts to.

That’s just a few off the top of my head. I reckon there are at least 30 in the Scottish leagues alone.

‘Bike’ as in ole Scots word for wasps nest…

…ole Kev generates more response with his daftness than a lot of the well thought out and well argued pieces by the likes of Barcabhoy.

  4. Pretty much all transfers are a gamble, there are no cast iron guarantees that even the most prolific or the most athletic footballer will arrive at your club and shine like they have previously. The history of the game is littered with those who ‘didnae quite make it’ when they got their step up to a bigger club.

In these circumstances it would be wise to reflect on the possible bid for Johnny Russell. From what I’ve seen of him he has agility, strength, pace and most importantly, he has an eye for goal.

However, despite all these promising attributes there is no certainty that he will be able to produce the type of form he has displayed at Tannadice were he to become a Celtic player.

Having said all of that, if we were to get him for under £1m then I think he should definitely be a priority target regardless of other comings and goings.

  5. Had a look at the Bert UEFA co-efficient thingummy as posted up as one of this morning’s CQN articles….would never in a million years have said that the Netherlands co-efficient would be lower than Scotland….but there it is.

Aye that’s a fair point DBBIA my response is to the fact that this blog is being taking over by anti Celtic, anti Irish posters like Kev and Singapore Sling at night and I see good Celtic men no longer posting because of the pash they have to wade through everyday just to read posts like Barcabhoys which is a prime example of the best CQN can be, that and the fact I’m sick of people slagging off my club and my culture.

    Hope yer well DBBIA

  9. Any stadium anoraks and fans of sustainable community-based football clubs may find something of interest in this plan and prospectus for Brentford FC’s new stadium…it also has some admirable corporate governance stuff detailed within.

Also nicks a familiar sounding slogan…:)

Seems quite a few of their mob’s noses are out of joint as we’ve got three stands and they have the away stand instead of their usual end!!

Did the wee yin keep you awake all night!!?? :-)

I believe Kev to be a Celtic fan as opposed to a supporter, in any case he ain’t no hun. However, I do think that his main purpose of posting is to wind others up, to get a reaction and to laugh heartily at responses whilst stroking his long haired tabby!!

Agree totally Starry, but in a sense in makes reading back over the posts easier if you have a wee personal list of posts that you just scroll by. The Gruesome ‘Twins’ is an example – I find their/his ramblings tiresome and have not read a word of theirs/his in months. I’m afraid the Kev guy is another one that I just never read because I know the substance of every post – critical negativism without fail. Ergo, skip it.

  14. Another reason for trying to sign Johnny Russell is the UEFA homegrown player rule. 8 of the 25 named players in squad for UEFA tournaments require to have trained with club(s) in national association for 3 consecutive seasons between ages 15 to 21.

We currently 5 (Mulgrew, Brown, Forrest, Watt & McGeouch) in our first team squad.

” He [ somebody called Jonjo Shelvey ] looks like an extra from a horror movie and he certainly plays football like an extra from a horror movie . My notes say that Liverpool paid @ 2 million euros for him . Incredible !”.

being a stadiums anorak myself, I liked that newsletter they have, and the design of the new stadium is different, and good.

but the big question is ………… which airline will advertise on the roof space.

  17. I think JR is worth a punt. A million or so isn’t massive money these days and his wages wouldn’t be out of hand. He has shown he can score goals at SPL level and I think we need a couple of strikers in.

  18. Starry,

I saw that story and read somewhere this morning that they need over 9000 attending to break even in a 12000 odd stadium to cover the Celtic fee. Seems a bit high-stakes for a friendly.

  25. Saint Stivs,

it’s sooo much better than the usual flat pack-o-rama.

Imagine they may carry on the big airline ad on the roof thingy at the new ground, but it looks like the pub on each corner of the ground feature is not being carried over:(

    Hamiltontim,

Didn’t read any figures for that but the Bees fans were moaning about getting stung (shameless I know:)) £25 per ticket, and that they were being moved into the smallest capacity side of the ground to clear the larger 3 sides for the away support.

One of the 4 ‘corner’ pubs at Griffin Park – The New Inn – has been a Celtic pub for years.

    Should be fun:)

Well reading the posts about the number of players who have come through the Celtic Academy and end playing for other clubs. I think we are doing a good job overall for Scottish football it would of course be nice to see more youngsters make a mark in our first team. It is disappointing in my opinion that so few youngsters make it through the ranks and become first team regulars at Celtic.H.H.

  28. Hamiltontim

Brentford fans only have the away end. I believe Celtic will have 9,000 tickets.

The EPl wage circus has killed it as far as we as a club are concerned, there can’t be many who would work for less money than they can earn down South??

  32. Morning Bhoys , day off today, cannae whack it.Doing absolutely hee haw.

Got Burghbhoy junior and little Miss Burghbhoy coming home from school for lunch.

IMO the hoops have no rush to make signings and no one who we don’t want to leave should leave until the end of the window and CL qualification secured.

On the JR front, fits the bill for me, young , with potential, skilful and a supporter as well.defo worth a million.

The English market is too inflated, little bargains there.

Concentrate on the markets that have served us well.

2-3 quality signings properly researched, not rushed will see us kick on.
