Rangers improper player registration evidence mounts

1152

More evidence emerged today on how Rangers recompensed players through their Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) scheme in The Sun newspaper, who have a draft contract Rangers offered an unnamed player.  The contract was a letter confirming a six figure payment as well as a £1200 per game appearance bonus.

An accountant told Sun reporters Paul Thornton and Ewing Grahame:

“I have been shown a contract of employment showing how much money players were going to get but also a back letter which I presume that individual has assumed is part of his salary. It seems like a contract.

“If the two documents are handed to someone together, is that seen as being his overall package? If the answer to that is yes then there is a problem because the money that goes into the trust really should be getting taxed because it is his salary.

“The fact it is there as a back letter at all suggests it is dodgy.”

Attention is obviously drawn to the potential criminal consequences of these tax arrangements but football fans throughout the country will be alarmed that Campbell Ogilvie, the man who was general secretary and director of Rangers when the EBT scheme started, is currently president of the SFA and would have been involved in scoping out the secret remit of the SFA inquiry into Rangers, which was asked to report within an incredibly quick two week period.  Ogilvie is also one of the few men the inquiry will report to.

If the allegations in today’s Sun are accurate, Rangers have improperly registered football players for a period of around a decade.  The penalty for playing an improperly registered footballer in any game is a 3-0 forfeit.

When the SFA president is in a position to confirm all of this, the association have all information they require to make a ruling on this, but despite these allegations being widely reported for many months, they have yet to even acknowledge there is anything to investigate.

Can you imagine the scrutiny the Football Association in England’s board and chief executive would be exposed to if this scandal was not being actioned?

  1. gallagher,

Thanks for the info, that would be the lowest of the low. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise though.

  2. Greetings. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Am I wrong in saying that Celtic fans may be missing a trick here?

Surely the SFA would be bound by Freedom of Information legislation should someone have the means and wherewithall to submit a few inquiries.

I would say that Henry McLeish should also be asked to look into these matters as they are pertinent to his recent government-sponsored report.

  3. What was the updated version of that song tey sang earlier……. ” I’m Rangers till THEY die, I’m Rangers till THEY die”

  4. An interesting agent to talk to would be Kenny Millers did he have the same agent when he was at both clubs.I would then assume the players from both clubs would have eventually know about these differences when players crossed the divide

  5. Did Inverness recently get a new groundsman. Just wondering why their pitch looks playable today.

    So I blame Canamalar….

  11. DeniaBhoy, the SFA have doggedly refused to investigate this or hold their president accountable. This is a huge mistake. They cannot cover this one up.

    We’re on the case.

Patrick27, I don’t think they will survive long enough to be relegated.

    petec, sure will, thanks.

ASonOfDan, I am sure Celtic and others will ask questions as soon as evidence presents itself.

  12. 1-3 to Rangers – I can only imagine the post match interview from Butcher – he’ll be seething, he’ll be right in about Rangers and the officials and the linespersons. Absolutely raging he’ll be.

  13. Ghuys pointless worrying about what songs they sing. We along with all decent Scots detest everything that the Rangers support represents. What can be done about them now? The police report them to the SFA, some of the media write about their disgust but nothing will be done. Fine them, deduct more points nothing will hurt them as they are already dead they just don’t know it yet. Let’s just keep the bubbly on ice and the fridge stocked with jelly and ice cream. Revenge is a dish best served very cold.

True, but often agents are just guys like Gordon Smith or Barry Hughes. They “represent” their clients but I don’t think they deal with the nitty gritty of legal wording. There are lawyers acting with them. It’s their job to scrutinise every millimetre of ink on these contracts. It’s not in their clients interest to sign up to something dodgy and have the cr@p hit the fan ten years later. I’m astonished that this seems to have happened.

  18. I challenge anyone who has even a modicum of sympathy for their plight to feel anythting but contempt for RFC and their fans after that 45 minutes of “singing”.

A truly scandalous repetoire of anti-Irish, anti-Catholic bile, straight from the 1920s.

This is the club praised to the high heavens by Alex Salmond – if he fails to condemn them now, we must draw our own conclusions about what life might be like in an independent Scotland.

  20. In the odd moment when I am not laughing at them it strikes me just what a joke, a farce, a black comedy the last 10 years and perhaps more Scottish football has been turned in to by rangers.

That we managed to beat them to 6 championships in the 2000’s against the background of what went on is incredible.

If the second contract is shown to be fact, if they fielded players illegally in almost every game they played then they must be stripped of every title and cup they won in that period and the trophies awarded to runners up – of course this is not perfect in the case of the cups because the teams that rangers beat in earlier rounds may have something to say about that.

Scum is as scum does. Apart from the filth I listened to for about 5 minutes before switching it off, apart from the years of sectarian employment policies, apart from having the entire establishment on their side – they cheated. They cheated. They cheated.

Hate is a strong word. But I have to say the feelings I have toward that club and their collective support (decent individuals aside – but then there were decent individuals fighting for the Third Reich!) based on their actions are pretty much feelings of disgust, revulsion and anger.

I know they will probably come back in some form or other, but for symbolic reasons if nothing else the only fitting end for that tawdry, scummy institution is death. Perhaps the decent among them might take it as an opportunity to leave the club that their fathers passed on to them and go and support Motherwell, Killie, St Mirren or Partick Thistle. What comes back will no doubt be every nit as bad and possibly worse than what came before, but we have to ensure that they can never again get away with cheating.

As for Campbell Ogilvie I think the first and easiest thing, but also pretty effective if done by enough people and made public, is a mass letter writing campaign questioning the ethics of his involvement in the inquiry.

I’m going to draft a letter now and find out where to send it.
