I must have missed your post. This was the post I was referring to.

Glasgow must be the last place on the planet where anyone cares about pre-season results and performances, especially the first few where it’s about getting your fitness right.

    ————————————-

I don’t care about the result. I care about the fact that we were overrun in the second half, that Rapid hit the bar, Bain had a magnificent save, they missed numerous sitters, and got a head to almost every cross into the box. We did nowhere near as well against their B team as they did against ours. Julien, Lawal and Urgohide were a collective shambles and we are in deep trouble in Europe and against the Orcs if CCV and/ or Starfelt get injured. The Orcs have Goldson, Soutar, Katic, Helander, Bassey and Lundstrum who can all play central defense. That is 6 players. We have CCV and Starfelt playing on his weaker side. On the plain evidence of the performance against Rapid, we have no one that can step in if either is injured. Welsh, Julien, Urgohide and Lawal, for different reasons, will be of no utility to us this season, particularly in the Group Stages of the Champions League. If we have to rely on them, we will be humiliated in every game.

Pre season and all that but I see no reason to think we’re going to tighten up at the back in Europe. We will concede by the barrowload in the champions league.

    ———————————————————-

I will change my mind if we do something to rectify our glaring defensive weaknesses before the transfer window closes. Meanwhile, as AN DUN says……………

  4. I am about to watch a Film from 1937 called ” Charlie Chan at the Olympics”……….Someone is for the ” HIGH JUMP” methinks !

My original post wasn’t directed at you and to be honest I share your concerns about the lack of good central defenders , just don’t want to crank it up to Defcon 4 just quite yet. I only post occasionally and try not to mention names as I’m usually at work and won’t be able to reply. I think it was ST TAMS post where he said something along the lines of the left back not looking interested that bothered me. Presume he meant our left back. I know he wears his heart in his sleeve at times and can be very critical, it’s just not the way I see things especially weeks before our first league game.

Someone else yesterday mentioned it was a Live updates blog and therefore criticism should be expected and that’s a fair point. I always came on here to get away from the over the top media style reaction but I recognise social media has changed and what was once shocking is now the norm.

Certainly have no intentions of arguing with anyone on here and in fact I’ve stopped myself from posting on occasion, especially personal stuff, due to the continual bickering

  6. Good morning from a sunny North Staffs. It’s going to be a scorcher. ☀️☀️

We tend to want managers to give fringe players a chance but be over critical when it doesn’t work out. Preseason games are arranged to improve fitness and test players / formations.

I agree we need a CH and probably a defensive midfielder.

What was wrong with calling the bonfire a `pyre`?

    ###

The primary meaning of the word is a bonfire used for burning the dead. Maybe a tad surprising that a mainstream outlet would use the word given the context and the political sensitivities involved.

Very sad of course, but a likely candidate for a Darwin award, which is maybe a bit ironic given that not all of the community are quite ready to accept the concept of evolution.

  8. BORGO67

You are correct , it was me that made that comment about our left back.

I never said he looked a poor player or is not going to be good for us . But on that 45mins display , I thought he looked woefully off the pace of the game and also looked like another one of these wingers that have been converted to a full back.

We need good defenders. Not more attacking players.

  9. ST TAMS

Sometimes when we see a comment written down that might have been said aloud at a game it can come across much more stern than intended so thanks for clarifying.

I really hope that Ange’s style is successful in the CL , I want more than anything to be in the mix in these games. I suspect if we draw a couple of the elite teams we will be watching our away games from behind the couch a place I’m familiar with on these nights no matter who our defenders have been. We saw glimpses of what our attacking style could do in Europe last season but we conceded far too easily , we have much more pace now so that will help.

  10. Two wee snippets from the abysmal Record this morning made me laugh.

Keith Jackson,is merrily chirping away about how terrific Gios transfer window has been.So much so,that he reckons Ange will need to be very careful when we come up against the Huns “Firepower”.

The Rutherglen Council were branded “Bigots”by some flute band, because they would not let them plaster Rutherglen main st,with”Tasteful and colorful bunting”for their stagger.

  11. St Tams,

Yep those pesky ,not great at defending, attacking full backs have been a real nightmare for Liverpool, and basically, every other successful team.

Bring back the good old dour ,wooden studs,Jim Kennedy, type of full back. That what I bloody always say.

  12. Tony Ralston was getting praised, rightly so,for his performances last season,by nearly everyone. The praise was earned by his “Attacking” prowess up the right wing. Not for his great defending.

  13. Man City,Liverpool, play against defenders every week, that we could never afford, playing most of the game with 10 men defending against them.Every so often they will hammer these teams,by 4,or 5 goals.

We will never be able to sign defenders good enough to fulfill the hopes of the fans.Fact of life.

A “defensive midfielder”will not make a blind bit of difference to our CL performances.

When would he play in an Ange team?CL games, and a couple against the Huns?

  14. TURKEYBHOY

Liverpool, have 2 great defensive midfielders in Fabinho and Thiago , they also have arguably the best centre half in Europe.

As for Tony Ralston, he is a very poor defender.

Waking to see the tennis result was like finding out Man City had stuffed the Huns. Good but meh.

Nick’s ‘colourful’ antics – abusing umps, anger issues, breaking rackets, gangsta fetish, impulsiveness, tanking games, spitting towards fans – may provide a kind of shock-value box office but aren’t they also signalling a kind of acting out/cry for help as the man mentally struggles with how the pressures get to him. He’s fessed up to some mental health issues and his failed attempt at self-medication, yet not much has changed after that revelation itself. If you don’t work it out, you act it out I’ve heard it said.

Like Gazza, I could appreciate the talent but not like the behaviour. I hope he’s not headed the same way.

As for No-Vacc; what a brilliant achievement.

    ———-

Critiquing individual Celtic players misses the point that the strength of an AP team is way more than the sum of its parts.

  18. BORGO67

Thank you for the clarification, and I hope you noted that I had no issue whatsoever with your opinion!😊

I am actually contemplating retiring from the blog. I have been lurking, then posting, since the outset, and I never criticize any poster. However, when I am critical of players, organization, tactics, substitutions, or the Board, I have been subjected to personal insults and psychobabble theories about my success ( or otherwise ) in life!

I have communicated offline with BMCUWP, Auldheid, BRTH, Eurochamps, HebCelt, Aipple, and SAINT STIVS, among others. All fine chaps, solid posters, and great Celtic men. I may switch from posting to refocus on personal contacts, and will take a decision by the start of the season.

  19. St Tams,

My point. We were all raving about Tony last season.

Because of his attacking threat, nothing else.

If you want Ange, you have to accept how he plays his teams. How many games do we need a holding midfielder? To satisfy everyone,we would need to be able to field 15 or 16 players.

The thing is,we need a favorable draw in the CL.Never had one yet,so maybe a 1st.

  20. INIQUITOUSIV

I must compose lots of comments that I never actually post for the reason you gave.

  21. TURKEYBHOY

We don’t need a favourable draw.

We need a squad that is prepared for CL football,. quality wise and tactically, so as we can at least compete.

We don’t have that at this present time.

  22. INQUITOUSIV

Hope you don’t give up. I might have poked fun at you once for being negative a couple of minutes into a live updates. I’ve found myself relying on the updates more frequently these days and I would miss your contributions .

I can be as negative as the best of them to the extent that when I get to watch a game at home it’s in a darkened room with the volume off.

  23. Ernie,

When I have turned on CQN these last couple of days, there is no box for entering a comment. I then have to try and login, which I do. I have learned that unless I make some sort of comment on page 1, CQN won’t refresh. This happens occasionally and I find it quite annoying. No idea why it happens.

Have you tried clicking on the refresh the page icon on the last page you can access once you’ve logged on? That might/should sort it out.
