Real story of football in Scotland in Fifa corruption shadow

706

This morning world football has plenty reason to be ashamed of itself. US prosecutors yesterday charged 16 Fifa officials, on top of the 14 charged earlier this year. As well as taking bribes and kick-backs, it is alleged money designated for charitable causes such as the relief of natural disasters, were siphoned off by Fifa executives. In recent years we’ve seen how revenue from charity games have been hijacked by club officials to pay bills, or perhaps fund signing bids for Daniel Cousin.

Tomorrow you are going to see the most Ethical Football Club in the World do its thing. Thousands of you will support the Foundation Christmas Appeal by putting money in buckets as you enter the ground.

That money will do incredible things.

It will support the Scottish Refugee Council, as they aid some of the world’s most vulnerable who have recently arrived in Scotland.

It will support the volunteers who run The Invisibles,  who help homeless charities in Glasgow by providing sleeping bags, clothing and toiletries for rough sleepers.

It will support the Glasgow City Mission, in their work with vulnerable adults and families with disadvantaged pre-school children.

It will support the incredible work of the Wayside Club, who provide food, shower, shaving and First Aid facilities to Glasgow’s homeless 365 days a year.

It will support Loaves and Fishes, who open their doors to people who need clothes, toiletries and food.

It will support Glasgow East Women’s Aid, who work with women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

And it will support the Salvation Army, who have been a lifeline for countless thousands for longer than Celtic have been in existence.
Salvation Army

The bar on ethics in football is not set particularly high, few clubs have a social mission as their core value. None do it like Celtic, the most Ethical Football Club in the World – bar none.

This is the story of football in Scotland 2015, no matter what happens in Switzerland or the Concafa region. You should be proud of your part in this great story.  Let’s make it a good one tomorrow – and let people know this is happening tomorrow.

  1. Weather is first item on RTÉ news, four inches of rain forecast for Atlantic seaboard.

Jobo: get your ass back on here and give us an early weather report tomorrow morning.

If match goes ahead tomorrow I reckon it will be a very small crowd.

  2. This is a Friday night on CQN?

I’ve been on the site since around 2006/2007. Scroll by most posts now. Shame.

Post something slagging off Celtic and or the board and you would have loads of people responding to you :-)

Can remember the “comedy night” one Friday on here while Paul67 and the little ball chasers were at Aberdour, it was manic but great craic. Never laughed so much on a Friday when I had stayed in.

If you haven’t seen my reply to your erroneous claim I did not answer your question on what I’d do if the Board acted as you suggested look at last page or two on previous blog.

Try not to miss it this time.

I remember spending one of my Christmas holidays on cqn from morning till night … cracking jokes… watching and listening to Pablos music choices and watching celtit goals. Even learned a few culinary tips.

Now you need to wear an umpires shirt to keep the peace

“I see lots of comment on Peter Lawwell’s £400k bonus. The key figure to concentrate on executive pay is the basic (in this case £524k), not the bonus. Celtic executive pay, including manager, chief exec and scouts, should heavily incentivise qualification for the Champions League. If we’re in the Champions League, all other objectives become possible. Failure to qualify brings a range of risks; so the execs should feel the pain of failure in the pocket. ”

    Interesting……

“BDO will announce they are not appealing the decision of the Law Lords

SFA President Alex McRae will adopt a more public role as spokesman for the SFA. Regan will fade into the background

McRae will announce that a new Commission of Enquiry is to be set up to review the implications on the LNS Review of the Law Lords decision.

The Terms of Reference will include evidence hidden from the first LNS review like the Small Tax Case. The Bryson interpretation of SFA rules on eligibility will also be revisited. Transparency will be promised during the Commission hearings. It will be clear from the ToR that a new broom is in charge.

Regan may well resign before the Commission have their first meeting.

    Meanwhile

King will resign from TRFC before the Contempt of Court case on 9 Dec.This will not cause Ashley to withdraw his fit and proper challenge to the SFA. That will be saved for later.

Both TRFC and RIFC will be declared insolvent by the RIFC Board. All Directors will then resign.

A respected Administrator will be appointed. His initial act will be to declare that liquidation may be more appropriate than administration if a CVA buyer does not emerge quickly”

seems like this came from a hun

You can’t handle Celtic being successful, the huns died, get over it….

    That’s the fella.

Thank the Lord it didn’t involve putting cheese on bread under the grill or it could have caused war between the “toasted” or “roasted” brigades

  11. Logging on and reading CQN is a pure habit that is hard to break. However 90% of the time it is more annoying then enjoyable.

I enjoy the chat on the day of a match but apart from that it is hard going most of the time. Even the good old Roy Croppie has gone quiet with his pics/tunes & videos. A pile of good guys are either gone or on a sabbatical. There are less then a dozen opinionated posters who are dominating the blog on a daily basis, they set the agenda and don’t give a toss about the rest.

  12. Corkcelt,

Too true, although I think a few tonight are attempting to resurrect CQN as it was in the good old days. It’s not nostalgia; it’s necessary. Too many have given up, which appalls me, who scrolls past the vast majority of contributors these days.

Awe come oan…whits happened tae this CQN internet thingy?

I thoat this wiz a safe place for us tae come oan an have our many varied opinions that i agree with and become a backslapping Celtic camaraderie vehicle faithful threw and through. Come oan the huns are deid yet we live. Whats wrong with you all?

  14. If I was only as smart as my phone I might regale you with links to songs that I like from Led Zeppelin or Rainbow, aah George, zippy and bungle great guys!, but I can’t so I won’t.

    Corkcelt,

I share your pain! I can’t say exactly what’s wrong, but I logged on about an hour ago and quickly skimmed thro’ the 8 pages of comments on this article. Before it would have taken me hours as I would be led down fact-finding googles on the historical and topical debates. Great entertainment for me and I would be able to throw a tuppenceworth in now and again.

My own circumstances have changed…no longer on the 4 on 4 off in Africa but working every earthly hour on a job at home for the past 8 months…which gives me problems trying to fit anything else at all in…

Anyway, just to give a wee story to you. My boy was on your Island recently – at the piping festival in Armagh City…playing in some gigs. He’s not particularly knowledgable on the history of things – just takes people as he finds them. Anyway, he played with some of the best musicians of that type in the world over a few days…and hadn’t a clue when he came back what political, religious persuasion any of them were. Me – I’m afraid I’ve always got that morbid curiosity of how people on both sides feel about things with regard to the issues that are often discussed here. I’m afraid I’m fascinated by it.

Maybe it’ll die with my generation!

Typing on a phone and haven’t looked back so apologies in advance!
