Reasons to support the Europeans

318

Those of us from small European football nations who have trouble qualifying for the World Cup should be encouraged by results to far.  Qualification places are allocated based on performance at previous tournaments, and so far, this has been a great tournament for Europe.

Five European teams have won and only one, reigning champions Germany, have lost.  Croatia got the better of Nigeria, one of Africa’s powerhouses, while Denmark and Serbia edged Peru and Costa Rica.

The draws involving European teams are probably more impressive.  Iceland matched Argentina while Switzerland drew level with Brazil last night.  Mikael Lustig’s Sweden take on South Korea this afternoon, before Dedryck Boyata’s Belgium face Panama.  Tunisia will be hoping to take something from England tonight to prevent a fourth consecutive defeat for African nations.

hard luck on the goalkeeper … he made a GREAT save, only to have the rebound fall right to Kane.

It would be hard to argue that England dont deserve to be in the lead ….

    Starry …

England seem to do well against weaker teams… but dont have the tactical nous to overcome the top teams…

I’m not worried about them winning the WC. Not going to happen.

  3. 5 live commentary not much easier to listen to

“should be 5 nil” 70 minutes of this to go

I would turn it off but still hoping for an Engerland defeat

starry … or a midfield or a coach … all they really have is Kane …(who, to be fair, is a great goal scorer).. and delle alli (lots of skill, but no dispcipline)

a bit scrappy at times, but, to be fair, one of the more entertaining halves of football in the tournament so far … a fair bit of goal mouth action.

  7. Chris Waddle is apoplectic

  8. Tunisian no.23 (Sliti?) looks great wee player. Reminds me a lot of Hannibal the Anderlecht captain when they won at CP.

  9. Half time. England the better team, fortunately for Tunisia only Kane can finish, Lingard should have a hat trick. England are like us in defence when we play on Europe. Always a mistake likely to come from any of the defenders. McGuire a bombscare and Walker could never defend as a full back let alone at centre back.

  10. Tunisia have the measure of them but Sh**erland have dangerous players & Tunisia make mistakes.

But the best bit is commentitters….brill.

    Yes, no spelling mistake..

  11. Hats off to England, an inexperienced team is really going for it, great to see. England should be leading by a couple. Dele Alli looks to me like he’s got a groin or thigh strain, picked it up after 30 minutes or so.

Alan Shearer saying Tunisia player ran into Walker’s elbow for the penalty.

Aye,Alan. Like Neil Lennon ran headfirst into your studs.

Sister went in for op today, high dependency ward for 4 days, then a bit of physical therapy .Hopefully back to her best after that ?

  15. Shearer greetin about Tunisia penalty. Listen to the defender, Keown, he knows what Walker did and knows it was a penalty. Rio having a go at Walker as well for his positioning.

Kane should have got a penalty after Tunisia scored, was like WWE slam to the ground.

BBC pundits at half time have got the butchers apron bloodlust.

    Dreary same old same old.

No mention at all that Ashley Young should have been off for a blatant, cynical and nasty elbow in the face of an opposition player.

Hey ho. Cmon you boys from Carthage. Stick the 150-year-old sense of Empire right up their rangers end.

  17. Looks like I’m in minority of 1 here. I despise the English Media but I like Southgate and his team. It’s refreshing change to see a young squad up for the game.

Far better than Tunisia but the defence keep putting themselves in trouble. If the pattern remains the same I’d expect England to score another 2 or 3.
