Rebellious behaviour will last for years

916

It will surprise no one that Uefa have charged our football club with “the displaying of an offensive banner and setting off of fireworks [sic]by fans”, this action was as inevitable as the dawn.  At least some of our number believes setting off flares in a football stadium is a reasonable action and that provoking European football’s governing body is a smart thing to do.

In terms of protest, “**** Uefa” is not quite up there with Martin Luther’s Thesis or what we’ve witnessed in the Arab world this year.  It’s simple rebellious behaviour, which some of us are compelled by in our teens and a few take a long time to shake off.

Forget calls to self-police, I’ve never seen it work with a football support.  Ever.  If you think you are going to convince anyone the folly of profane banners, flares or even IRA chanting at a football game, save your breath.  Those who are up for the protest (whatever the subject is) are more likely to find your call for restraint as complicity.

This series of protest and consequence will run for years, will split the support and damage Celtic.  Neither the club nor the support has the leadership to do anything about it.  Copy and paste the thoughts you write on the subject, you can use them again without having to retype.

Common Sense is missing from this debate and it appears that Nil By Mouth is lacking common sense and is not in a position to educate anybody on the matter until they educate themselves.

  3. I would be delighted if they were to sell Jellyfish. In my humble opinion he’s a player and at the moment he is the one factor between us and the title.

We can all talk nabout the points we dropped in November las season and some of you will batter Sammi for his penalty miss at Ibrox. But they had a great run towards the end of the season and he played a hugely significant role in that. There were a number of games that they either won 1-0 and by the odd goal and he was the one who dug them out of several deep holes.

Even if they were, and it’s a big if, to get 6/7 million for him, it is looking increasingly unlikely that fat Sally would get much or any of this to bolster his warchest.

They sell him and the league is ours. Just so happens that even if they don’t I think we’ll win it anyway.

No one – Tims, huns, etc, can be 100% sure what can or should not be sung. I would advocate 2 columns, with a row for each club. The columns are headed “May be sung” and DO NOT SING. The songs, chants, add-ons, etc should be dissected (word by word) by a group consisting of the SPL, SFA, SL, clubs, local polis, fans groups (in our case – CSA, CT, GB, perhaps even representatives from the main websites). This would not happen at one meeting, but could take a couple of months. It can be done however, and then it is green and white, with no shady blue areas (see what I did there?). Everyone would know what we can sing.

This article concentrates on sectarianism as conflict between groups. For sectarianism as a characteristic of sects, see sect.

Sectarianism, according to one definition, is bigotry, discrimination or hatred arising from attaching importance to perceived differences between subdivisions within a group, such as between different denominations of a religion, class, regional or factions of a political movement.

Like a lot of things that were initially started with noble intentions, it seems to have suffered from mission creep.

Also, while it is a registered charity they employ full time paid staff – most of their training people and co-ordinators and whatnot aren’t working for free.

They therefore have a vested interest in defining the scope of “sectarianism” as widely as possible, for the same reason insurance salesmen have an interest in frightening you about all sorts of mishaps that may befall you if you don’t buy their insurance.

  15. Just a thought bhoys….if no one is prepared to tell the Celtic support what is perissable to sing and what is not then why doesn’t one of the fans’ groups draw up a list of songs and present them to ACC Corrigan. He can then respond telling the support which songs will not be tolerated – and why. That way there would be no ambiguity.

  17. Rangers can double the £9m they want for Nikica Jelavic if they hold onto him until summer

By Mark Hateley on Dec 16, 11 07:45 AM in rangers

Vultures will circle over Ibrox in January like horny rams as teams in England and abroad will look to prey on Rangers and hand-pick their best players.

That’s the scenario the club finds itself in every January as potential buyers look to whisk the cream of Scotland towards England.

But it’s precisely why Alistair McCoist, and owner Craig Whyte, are doing the right thing by looking to tie up their big-name stars on long-term deals.

It doesn’t surprise me Rangers are keen to talk to the likes of Dorin Goian, Maurice Edu and Sasa Papac – after securing the futures of Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Steven Whittaker in the summer.

But there’s one man above all others Alistair will want to keep – top scorer Nikica Jelavic.

The Croat is the ‘big one’ as we get closer to the transfer window opening on New Year’s Day. He’s the one guy the fans fear losing. Jelavic is an international striker who scores goals. He’s got everything in his locker and that is why precisely he will not be leaving Ibrox.

He’s at a good age is fit has a great temperament has a nice haircut and is everything you would want in a centre-forward. He has 14 goals so far this season but is nowhere near his top form yet. If he maintains that and he looks likely to hit 50 goals, he could command a fee in the region of £15million.

But it’s in his best interests to stay at Rangers.

Remember, he has Euro 2012 coming up and wants to be playing regular football. Sitting on the bench at Stamford Bridge or Old Trafford is of no use to him.

If he goes to a new club in January he could be in and out of the team and that form could desert him for the Euros.

But if Rangers can keep hold of him until the summer and he performs well in Poland and Ukraine you could DOUBLE that £7m asking price easily.

So it’s in Jelavic’s interests, and Rangers’, that he stays at Ibrox until the end of the season at least.

    TARGETS

In terms of the other players, the club have to secure their most important ones, especially if the on-going tax case provides a negative outcome.

The worst-case scenario for Rangers is that they eventually sometime in distant future have to sell them. If they do, probably after Rangers have got the best out of them it’s important the club is first in a strong position before they do so.

But on the flip side of that, if everything goes well and they want to attract players, they have retained the best ones already there. That’s why they signed up McGregor, Whittaker and Davis before the season had even started. Some of them I have been told were gutted that they could not sign for longer due to UEFA restrictions.

Players at other clubs in England and Europe will look at Rangers’ top stars staying and drooling by seeing a positivity in that. It sends out a message to potential targets who might be worried about the club’s financial predicament that Rangers is a top club where you can play and be secure for life.

If they look and see the best players being sold it’s not going to be an attractive place to play your football. But good players will want to go to Rangers if top players already there are on very long-term deals.

Also, if they’re tied down, it means you get ‘daft’ money for them, if a buying club is desperate enough and they were falling over themselves to sign Jelavic in the summer. Take Gary Hooper he has been banging them in for Celtic and his stock has risen to the extent that Celtic batted away a 29million pound bid in the summer. No wonder Celtic Supremo Peter Lawwell was seen to be so contented. Just think how much internationalist Jelavic must be worth.

Getting these guys on big contracts also gives the fans peace of mind.

In the current climate, they are the priority at the club. Times are tough off the field but if fans see Craig and Alistair trying to achieve things under difficult circumstances, like tying down their best men for life, it gives them a lift.

Purely on a playing sense, guys like McGregor, Goian, Papac, Edu, Davis, they’re the cornerstone of Alistair’s side now. Most of them have gone the distance before.

I know Edu has had criticism and needed time to settle in when he arrived due to the cold climate and his dislike for Scottish women. But the American has finally started to show why Walter paid £2m for him in 2008.

Alistair knows they’ve performed so well in the last three years when everyone has written off Rangers.

Of course, there is a bit of a black cloud hanging over the club because of the state of the SPL with Hearts and Kilmarnock struggling finacially. Because of that uncertainty, and the fact they have excellent players, Alistair will automatically be worried whenever a high window opens.

But as a manager, he has to try to safeguard himself and the club by ensuring his main players are tied down preferably with a ball and chain and tagged – only joking of course but if Rangers have a player with just a year left on his deal and clubs come bidding, they will be forced into a corner.

And that’s not a good position for them to be in, even if a bid came in for Kirk Broadfoot.

  26. Folly Folly – Nil By Mouth is turning into the laptop loyal’s best pal: ‘politically sectarian’, eh?

If Jellyfish kicks out at a player when the ball is nowhere near him while wearing the hoops he will be reviewed using video evidence and get a four game ban.
