Rebellious behaviour will last for years

916

It will surprise no one that Uefa have charged our football club with “the displaying of an offensive banner and setting off of fireworks [sic]by fans”, this action was as inevitable as the dawn.  At least some of our number believes setting off flares in a football stadium is a reasonable action and that provoking European football’s governing body is a smart thing to do.

In terms of protest, “**** Uefa” is not quite up there with Martin Luther’s Thesis or what we’ve witnessed in the Arab world this year.  It’s simple rebellious behaviour, which some of us are compelled by in our teens and a few take a long time to shake off.

Forget calls to self-police, I’ve never seen it work with a football support.  Ever.  If you think you are going to convince anyone the folly of profane banners, flares or even IRA chanting at a football game, save your breath.  Those who are up for the protest (whatever the subject is) are more likely to find your call for restraint as complicity.

This series of protest and consequence will run for years, will split the support and damage Celtic.  Neither the club nor the support has the leadership to do anything about it.  Copy and paste the thoughts you write on the subject, you can use them again without having to retype.

  1. Just illustrates the pressure of being Celtic manager, the guy crumbled up here while in charge and that was without bombs being posted to him…

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray was named the BBC North East Sports Personality of the Year for 2011.

Mowbray, who took the reins in October 2010, has taken the club he served as a player and captain from 22nd in the Championship to promotion hopefuls.

“I’m very proud to be in charge of the club,” Mowbray told BBC Look North.

“I look at the league table now and sleep easier, but our ambition is to get back to the Premier League.”

You have shown in your response that you understand our current situation,

with regards to Celtic PLC, and i suspect that even though it doesn’t come across

as such, that a fair % of the support, underneath the clouded thoughts and emotions, do.

So my main question is do we/will we just accept this?

In our current structure there is no getting away from the demands of PLC,

this i understand and accept, but to the detriment and intentional ignorance of all else we value , i do not.

Equality/fairness/integrity has been central to who we are ‘n’ what we do for over 120 years,

both in a sporting and social sense.

The clubs own current mission statement in its social aims reads as follows,

“To maximise all opportunities to disassociate the Club from sectarianism and bigotry of any kind”

How then can the PLC justify the current treatment and failure of our support ?

for what amounts to nothing more than political in-correctness in an agenda set by our detractors,

whilst ignoring blatant and insidious sectarianism and bigotry of the orc and establishment,

which as i have highlighted is a complete failure of the clubs own social mission statement.

They cannot and action needs to be taken.

    http://scottishlaw.blogspot.com/2011/12/salmond-uses-snp-holyrood-majority-to.html

If anyone gives this credence they are barking – firstly, the Catholic Church doesn’t control “Europe”. That might be some deranged anti-Catholic view – that everyone in Europe is waiting for the Pontiff’s signal to do… er something. But you’d have to be nuts to think that is the case in twenty-seven democtratically elected governements across Europe – from protestant Scandinavia to Orthodox Greece… not forgetting candiate countries like muslim Turkey…

Secondly if Salmond wanted to take Scotland independent he’d call a referendum. The SNP swept to power on an unholy storm of anti-Labour (Blair/Brown) and LibDem (coalition) combined with the historic anti-Tory feeling, leaving no-one left to vote for! That was a once in a generatiojn opportunity. Every poll has shown a majority against actual independence, I would imagine in the current climate it would be even worse. If SNP calls a referendum and fails their raison d’etre will go too, for probably a dozen years if not permanently….

Salmond is pandering to the middle classes with this anti-football legislation – no anti-rugby laws did you notice? No he thinks he has the working class sewn up with the defections from Labour so he’s courting the middle ground. If I have learned one thing about Scottish politics of late, it’s that it is so parochial and inconsequential (even to the the rest of the UK, let alone Europe) that it is immaterial.

The SNP want what every politician and party want, POWER. Power in Scotland, nothing else. Salmond’s Law (I hope) and the reversion to the normal voting patterns (I expect), will scupper that.

It’s the first time in 60 years of supporting Celtic that I can feel a hatred building inside me for a Celtic Board.A couple of weeks ago I wrote on here that I felt I couldn’t go back to Celtic Park again if there was no fight by the board regarding appealing the injustice of the fine imposed by EUFA.It looks like I won’t be going back to Celtic Park in the near future.

Whether it was right or wrong for the fine that was imposed is another matter, what depresses me is this boards acceptance of the fine without any fight at all for justice.A first year Lawyer would have won the case in court, even MWD could have defended the name of Celtic better than this inept board we have at present.

The wording on the banner was wrong, I think the trouble stemmed from nearer home, and their name should have headed the banner instead of Eufa,Eufa were only doing what was asked of them, the supporters are always singing about the SFA,why did you not insert those initials instead, it would have been apt,why not the SPL, another appropriate heading.

Paul you say this hassle will go on for years,If there is inactivity from our board re fighting our corner, then I can see it carrying on for years,a month ago I wouldn’t have said this. But if I was fifty years younger, I would be up there with the Green Brigade, and I would have been diverting my anger towards this present board, they are not fit for purpose.

Pig Packie’s Accent (and Doug C)

    Thaks for your kind words.

I dont post very often, partly due to time constraints, but mostly because, as I live in Canada, I dont feel that I have the familiarity with much of the local issues that is required to make properly informed comments. And, even if I read everything, I sometimes feel like, as an outsider, I dont have the right to tell you guys (that really have to live with this crap) how you should deal with things ona day to day level.

However, Paul’s suggestion that an articile on ‘what it means to be Celtic and a Celtic supporter today’ got my brain churining the last few days.

As someone who was trained as a theologian/ethicist, much of my time was spent trying to figure out how to articulate what it means to live a good life, and how to help society become what it could and should be. (On a confessional note, even though my dad was a Celtic fan, as a youth, I was a Killi fan because my uncle played for them … but as I got older, I fell in love with the (admittedly, romantic) idea of a club that started as a charitable entity, and who stood up for what was right (being proud of its roots but inclusive of everyone), and against prejudice and hatred…..

Moral theology is about taking a feeling (what you know in your heart to be right), and translating that into language and action. With feelings like that, and my father’s influence, how could I not end up a Tim?

One of my areas of focus was on the role of language, and how politics determines language (which, in turn, determines politics). The connection between language and policitcs is fairly self-evident, and, after Canada passed its own constitution, morality (which was always – but subtely – informed by pollitics – became explicitly so.) This is why I spent a few years getting my law degree … although, with not a lot of university teaching posts for theologians, I ended up staying in private practice. This has only reinforced my views of the politicization of language and law.

I know that this stuff makes many people’s eyes roll back in boredom, but, in my view, today, more than ever, it is important that these issues be brought to the fore. Corporate agendas are now given, and accepted, as not only good, but also as the truth – almost without question.

Many who would read this would question what this has to do with Celtic?

A few things … as Paul commented, there is a vacuum in the debate about the question of a ‘Celtic identity’, but, as the recent debates show, these questions are becoming less abstact, and more real and pressing every day..

They say that the greatest lie that Satan ever told was to convince the world that he doesn’t exist. In practical terms, we hear this all the time, ‘mistakes even out over the season’…. ‘they (Celtic and R***s fans) are the same, and just as bad as the other’. This is Scotland’s great lie – trying to convince us and the world that their evil (hatred, bigotry) doesn’t exist (it does), or that we are the same as them (we aren’t).

The GA and their complicit media have always tried to control the debate, or more accurately ensure that the debate never begins, by their increasingly politicized use of language and media (books like Celtic’s Paranoia document that superbly). However, thanks largely to the internet, this is not so easy to do anymore; people are starting to catch on to this, which is why they have recently chosen a different approach – the SNP legislation approach. If they cant stifle debate through the old media, they will try to do so by criminalizing it (even though the legislation would not hold up as fair and reasonable in most modern civilized worlds – and certainly not in Canada, where our Charter would protect freedoms from such overly broad and ill defined legislation).

I love this site as it brings together so many divergent people and views, bound by one common love. Recently, however, and more than ever, there have been clear attempts to divide and conquer the Celtic support (trying to drive a wedge between the Boad and the fans, between different groups of fans). “they’ are happy when we are fighting amongs ourselves (over NL, Banners, the GB) because it allows them to continue their dispicable work without challenge.

Paul suggested that there might be some worth in an article on what it means to be Celtic and a Celtic supporter today. I have been giving it a bit of a thought, and it is a very large task. However, even quickly, I can see some use to that. Even a cursory consideration shows that, if we take a step back, and look at the history of Celtic, and what it represents, we will see that, for all of our differences, there is so much more that unites us. We must never forget this.

And, for those that oppose Celtic (whether at the SFA, or the media)… the thought of a truly united Celtic support (that is, united with each other, with the Board, and against R***s, and what the GA represents) must terrify our enemies.

That isn’t to say that I or you will agree with everything that PL says, or the GB says or does. Debate is healthy, and necessary for growth. But, always remember -(i) our fellow Celtic supporters aren’t the real enemy, and (ii) what unites us as Celtic fans is always more important than what divides us.
