Rebellious behaviour will last for years

916

It will surprise no one that Uefa have charged our football club with “the displaying of an offensive banner and setting off of fireworks [sic]by fans”, this action was as inevitable as the dawn.  At least some of our number believes setting off flares in a football stadium is a reasonable action and that provoking European football’s governing body is a smart thing to do.

In terms of protest, “**** Uefa” is not quite up there with Martin Luther’s Thesis or what we’ve witnessed in the Arab world this year.  It’s simple rebellious behaviour, which some of us are compelled by in our teens and a few take a long time to shake off.

Forget calls to self-police, I’ve never seen it work with a football support.  Ever.  If you think you are going to convince anyone the folly of profane banners, flares or even IRA chanting at a football game, save your breath.  Those who are up for the protest (whatever the subject is) are more likely to find your call for restraint as complicity.

This series of protest and consequence will run for years, will split the support and damage Celtic.  Neither the club nor the support has the leadership to do anything about it.  Copy and paste the thoughts you write on the subject, you can use them again without having to retype.

  1. Good afternoon Celts and Edward, work finished for this year ….. Happy days!

Paul67 re the flare chat in you’re leader, I think they need to stop on safety grounds. I’ve been in the ground at a Celtic friendly when flares were lit, I was close to them and what happened was the person with the flare passes it amongst the crowd, when the flare burns down the eeejit holding it tossed it (he thought) onto the park, it went halfway down and landed in the crowd, later they tried it again…. Same result. There’s no excuses it should stop, re the banner protest could have been better made methinks and personally it wouldn’t be Uefa I’d be protesting at.

    Anyway HH to ye all!

  6. Meanwhile, the SPL has also tightened the rules governing unacceptable conduct, to include: “using words, conduct or displaying any writing or other thing which indicates support for, or affiliation to, or celebration of, or opposition to an organisation proscribed in terms of the Terrorism Act 2000.”

What are the organisations proscribed then?

“the Catholic European Union”. WTF? You want to explain that? I though your posts encouraging criticism of protestant refs were a bit weird, but that one takes the biscuit. Especially given Paul67’s article references Martin Luther!

As for those criticising UEFA for charging “our fans” for holding up banners with expletives or letting off flares, Zybsek posted earlier their form on that. UEFA sell the TV rights around the world, most of the world speak English. It damages UEFA’s revenues that TV cos have to pixel banners or not show the goals because of expletive banners. Those defendiong these muppets – or indeed promoting “self-policing”. What’s your view on one of the Celtic- sponsored stewards present in the crowd alledgedly being assaulted?

And those decrying Celtic for not “backing the fans” on the songs issue – this would be the same Celtic that has asking fans NOT to sing these songs for FIFTEEN YEARS, yet they have been on this increase – why should they? It would undermine everything they have done for the last decade and a half to diminish these songs.

Good point, getting ahead of ourselves.

The secret weapon v Kilmarnock will be Collum – what’s the betting he will emerge from nowhere for that one? He will sort a red card out for someone, probably Big Vic or Hooperman, to help Neil pick his team.

Or Heaven forbid, he actually gets the 28th?

I will take 1-0 v Kilmarnock and hope FF saves their late penalty.

    ———————–

Collum took the disgraceful decisions to new levels in the disgraceful decision season.

Hamilton red card from James Forrest (appeal rejected – watch for Pawlett appeal outcome this week, identical tackle).

Hamilton yellow card for McGinn for diving when he was clearly chopped down.

Hamilton goal 2 yards offside with 6 yard line as a clear marker.

Broadfoot dive, no yellow, penalty kick awarded.

Above decision reached with the help of mirrors mounted on the main stand roof and Lisbon Lions lower tier stand.

Three penalties awarded to Rangers when one was outside the box, one was a nothing coming together and one was stone waller.

Two red cards to Dundee Utd in above game.

No wonder his star is on the rise. I just don’t get it with this guy, his competency levels fail to register on the competency-ometer.

I suspect you wrote that article before the SPL announced its’ new rules vis a vis “unacceptable conduct”, incorporating the Terrorism Act 2000 into the rule book. Is it just me or are recent events in some way conflated. Think about it for a moment. Celtic are reported to both the SPL and to Uefa following matches against Hibernian and Rennes. To the best of my knowledge the charges were materially indistinguishable, and yet on the first, the Board defended the club, whilst on the second they conspicuously failed to do so, and acquiesced in the sanction that followed. Now, you can say all you like about the banner, but one thing we can agree on is that it was there for a reason. It was a protest against the club being found guilty (by Uefa, but not by the SPL) of what the Glasgow Police referred to as “illicit behaviour”. I questioned last week whether the word “illicit” even appears anywhere in the Uefa Canon, but it will not change my view even if it is. Celtic have colluded with Uefa, and not to good effect. The Board have sided with the Match Commander, with regards to the Rennes match, but not in relation to the Hibs match. It is they, not Ross Connolly, who have rubber stamped a verdict that will be used a priori, to help convict Celtic supporters under the SNP football related laws. It is they, incredibly, who have allowed the incorporation of the Terrorism Act 2000 into the SPL rules. More I think about it the more I think the bhoys with the banner were the only ones acting with honest intentions.

Celtic PLC are exactly what it says on the tin a PLC, and like most PLCs, have a PR dept., for showing all the constructive dealings that they have, with various charities etc etc. They totally ignore and try to keep hidden from public view, anything, that they are doing that

they believe would alienate their customer base.

Celtic supporters however are from the widest range of people, of any other club in the UK and most of Europe.

Therein lies the problem the PLC like to make us “think” we are very important to them in all aspects of the football club, but we all know we are only the pound shillings and pence of their PLC Business, they also play on our emotional attachment to Celtic, as a PLC, and not as custodians of the “Football Club”.

We “the Fans” are left to debate the ins and outs of all things, and the PLC only get involved when one of these topics affects the bottom line, its always the bottom line that concerns the PLC, nothing else.

So to get back to the original concept of your post.

So the definition of the “win” is, if its something that could effect the “Bottom Line” then the debate is led by the PLC using their friends in the media.

If its about something that effects only the fans, then they take a back seat, apart from a couple of soundbites here and there to make sure that the fans “think” they have our best interests at heart por cierto.
