Referee lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour? Watch your back, Celtic

1441

Well done to the Daily Record for revealing that SFA referee, Eddie Smith, was the policeman who reported Celtic fans to Uefa for singing offensive songs against Rennes last month.  Smith was one of the referees who declined to make his services available as referees went on strike last season while Celtic took-on the SFA amid accusations of lies, bullying, sectarian behaviour and cover-ups among referees at the association.  He is no longer on the Grade 1 list.

Following the strike the SFA Head of Referee Administration was removed from his post and referee, Dougie MacDonald, who was accused of lying to Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, resigned, prompting then-Celtic chairman, Dr John Reid, to say the club felt vindicated in raising their concerns.

Vindicated, no doubt, but with more than a few feeling bitter towards the club.

While the Daily Record can reflect on some good work today, bizarrely, the Scotsman newspaper accused Celtic fans of sectarian chanting at the Rennes game, something even police-gossip, Eddie Smith, didn’t accuse them of.

Why stop at accusations of sectarian behaviour?  If the Scotsman are going to be ridiculous, why not accused Celtic fans of genocide and treason?  Better still, just say lots of them have funny names, go to strange schools but will never ascent to the British throne.

Celtic have 123-years of non-sectarian history, it is downright offensive to suggest otherwise.

Posters that don’t or can’t go to Celtic Park, especially beware, because your continual referral to “IRA songs being sung” is not only valueless but wrong, your information is tainted at worst, or at best second hand, and anecdotal.

The Ooh Ahh reference was done to death yesterday, and it’s fairly well established even for some that don’t or can’t go to Celtic Park, but rely instead to take their information from the BBC et all, that this lyric has been correctly abandoned, some time ago, ( please try and keep up )

Celtic fans can demonise Celtic if they like, it’s quickly becoming a national pass time overnight, but unless you can refer to specific ‘songs’ sang in chorus, your contributions are less than helpful and unwanted, in the debate.

Please bear in mind the specific nature to the allegation, is unknown so don’t work yourself into a lather, with delusionary massed ranks of Celtic fans singing songs that aren’t sung, instead re visit the header to the thread, and unify our club.

If you don’t the next time you make it, near Celtic Park for a game you may be reported for standing on the cracks in the pavement.

Paul McBride will be saying what the Celtic board want him to say. He may be a self-serving media whore, but he also won’t bite the hand that feeds.

You are correct, he will be a board member soon.

So heres the story so far, throughout this boards reign, they have encouraged the sectarian authorities to vilify the Celtic support, they have sat back and enjoyed the show of illegal abuse hurled at the Celtic support and made damn sure the Celtic support were stripped of any form of vocal retribution.

They are in the know on the financial irregularities and the likelyhood of the hun going bust, looks to me like thay are makeing themselves look attractive to the disenfranchised hun.

Just think you might be sitting at Celtic park singing the sash with your fellow old firm supporters.

MWD – to follow up on your earlier post, it would be interesting to know what UEFA delegates attended the Rennes game. A poster on here yesterday mentioned Kenny Scott, former security chief at Mordor who now acts as a security adviser to UEFA. Although, I’m sure he would be completely impartial in all aspects of his job….

The fact that complaints have been raised after two home games is quite interesting, considering some of the away support’s repertoire this season, particularly the retro 80’s songbook! The reasons for this “backlash” have been discussed on here before, so I won’t go over old ground.

It’s almost as if someone is determined to attack the home support, or more specifically a section of the home support.

Removal of the GB from Celtic Park will also remove the matchday atmosphere….and thousands of season card holders like myself if our esteemed board just let it happen!

Must be strange acoustics in the stadium because from where I sit in block 143 it doesn’t always sound too corrected. Although sometimes it’s very clear when it is.

  8. I read through a few replies to me last night, and noticed once guy reference me as some kind of group leader, possibly paid but certainly dead set on destroying our beloved club. I’ve got to say there is nothing quite like being accused of being a conspirator by 10-20 different posters on CQN to harden an opinion. I mean could this be more absurd, and yes, sadly paranoid. Paranoia, not a trait of Celtic fans, but in this context the trait of idiots who really couldn’t put together a logical argument if they had Kant coaching them. I’m saying I know these guys are morons, because of the failure to address the rational points made and the childish attacks that forms their response – also they truly believe I’m more than a regular Celtic fan who just so happens not to care a jot for the clique culture that developed on CQN in recent years.

However, you only have my word for it. Am I the big bad boogie man who is paid by media to upset the good people of CQN, or a concerned Celtic fan who, along with the other powerful voices you heard yesterday on CQN and the Radio (like our most adored QC) form just the tip of the ice berg.

No-one should be in any doubt there is no reverse gear on this. Never has been. What we face up to now is a choice between doing the right thing and supporting our club in the process or letting the agenda created by a minority of Celtic fans, a majority of Rangers fans and some in the media succeed in undermining us.

How can we not see that no-one from outside the goldfish bowl will ever accept that any part of this is acceptable. You might brow beat someone into accepting that, yes Rangers are worse than Celtic, here’s a gold star, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking this argument wins us any friends.

There are other ways we can achieve the ends many on here seek. Accepting our flaws and tackling them in a way no other club (particularly in Scotland) has would set an example for all to follow. And how could we object to good outcomes and why shouldn’t we take the lead in finding them. No club is better placed to take a lead, no club has fans better equipped for this challenge.

Anyway, like I say, CQN may not be representative. CQNers may not think I’m representative. However, I’ve a strong conviction that my views are just the tip of the ice berg. There are a rump of Celtic fans that will be left behind in all this. And the reason that’s going to happen is that Celtic have been embarrassed in a way we never, ever have before. A lot of Celtic fans are angry about this, some want to blame everyone else, but many, many of us know exactly who to blame. We are not part of the Old Firm and we are not a green counterpart of Rangers. This disgrace is not for Celtic… I think a few of the aggressively defensive types are in for a surprise this time – we, the decent Celtic fans, demand our board stop the slide into behaviour more suited to the blue half.

  9. This current situation was inevitable. Rangers are in the mire and were being attacked from all angles. That is not acceptable in Scotland.

Celtic are now being dragged in and I think we will get a slap on the wrist. If a fans group take this to the European court of human rights I would bet a fair wedge that this would be thrown out. This is football though and they can make their own rules.

Having sung Irish songs at games for many years I tend to just sing the ones that don’t mention the ‘RA. Those times have gone and Ireland has moved on. I think Celtic fans provided a voice and a lot of support for that cause all over the world but those days are over. The country is at peace and trying to rebuild. It will take generations but Northern Ireland is moving in the right direction.

Celtic fans had moved on and there is no doubt the League Cup Final was the catalyst for the rebel songs to return big time.

The Celtic support need to be bigger than all of this. With crowds falling we need to create a good atmosphere with the Green Brigade leading the support in the type of new Celtic songs they have brought to Paradise.

I do have to laugh at people who think we would be better in England. Take what happens and multiply it by ten or twenty. Every city Celtic visited would have their BNP/Neo Nazi’s/hooligans waiting for our arrival. We may have friends in England now through testimonials and friendlies but when you are on league buisiness and rivals it would be a different story. We are Scottish/Irish/Different. We sing different songs and wave different flags.

I don’t want Celtic to move to England. Our fans lives would be in danger every time they crossed the border.

Let’s get back to the football. Take the rap on the knuckles. Change the song book or expect a ban or point reduction. It’s that simple.

A bit of sanity at last. You get the feeling some Celtic fans want to hear some songs sung. Maybe so they can wring their hands in time.

  11. Anyway while we are on the songs debate can anyone enlighten me to the meaning of or the the story behind the chant that sounds like an Apache raindance/wardance

  12. Is all of this nonesense currently playing out in our stupid media, the police mention ‘illicit’ songs, PMcB condemns the GB, Celtic seek clarification and promise to assist etc., part of an elaborate plan to entrap the huns when they visit on 28th December? Sacrifice the GB, lance the Celtic board’s boil, for misdemeanours, then insist on an even playing field when they bring their karaoke of bigotry and rascisms.

Or do I give the board to much credit for being intelligent enough to come up with a devious plan?

  13. Is Paul McBride QC acting on behalf (unofficially) of the Board on this issue – and as such, his comments are indicative of the PLC’s position on this? If so, then Blantyrekev’s Cassandra post from 09:42 may be far closer to the truth than we realise.

Interesting to note that Paul67 was stitched up in one of these reports this morning as well. Being quoted after the “esteemed” Paul McBride QC who condemns these evil illicit chants (by 0.026% of the home crowd), as denying that it happens. Trying to paint him as similar to one of the muppets from the RTS or Rankers Media.

Who would be put in charge of orchestrating this week’s campaign? Seems a bit of a more professional effort than the usual. It would have to generate extensive meeja coverage to continue to protect the privacy of the world’s most odious football club, albeit Scotland’s favourite. But it has striking similarities to last year’s lies about Steven Craven’s reasons for quitting, which also made headline news worldwide.

There’s some nasty lowlifes out there – how do they sleep at night? They shame their families. Imagine growing up to discover one of these people was your parent?

Actually, one of the most charitable actions we could undertake at this time, would be to organise coach trips for all Meeja House employees to a tour of Aushcwitz. Maybe give them a history book or two to read during the journey. Maybe some anger therapy as well.

It needs one of us to brave under-cover work, applying for employment there, whistling TBB every morning to blend in, and then subtely suggesting a wee coach trip holiday for all during the summer break. Easy peasy.

Don’t pay much attention to my nonsense – but my first sentence above is the important one.

  23. Maybe we should replace our songs with some good old fashioned hymns such as Hail. Holy Queen and O Heart of Mary.

Now, who could possibly object to that?

  24. I don’t think that in 40 years of supporting Celtic I have ever felt so angry. Anger directed towards the football authorities and towards the board of directors of the club that means so much to me and many, many others.

Almost 100 years of unadulterated bigotry has been tolerated by this country and the football authoritiues eminating from the south side of Glasgow.

Whether you agreee or disagree with references to “The RA” this is a concerted attack on our club because it doesn’t fit the profile so hardened into the Scottish physchy. The references to the RA may or not be offensive, this has been debated to death on here and there will never be a consensus reached amongst ourselves, but they are not sectarian nor are they against any current law.

The Celtic board are either complicit in this or they need to stand strong in the face of this attack. My take on this is answered by their silence on the matter.

Time for Celtic PLC to grow a pair or we as the support need to, how this is achieved I will leave to others better qualified than me to suggest.

One Celtic, one support, time to stand together, now is the time to show the Celtic colours loud and proud.

It wasnt just the League Cup Final . It has been the last few years with the huns adding songs such as the Famine song ,BJK too their already vile repotoire.

Some were deemed illegal. But they continued pretty much unchallenged .

At Celtic Park republican songs had completly stopped for several years thanks to Fergus McCann. But with the huns sinking to new depths some republican songs started being sung again.

  27. I could never understand McBride’s take on the new laws and took it as being something of his creation for his next political role.

However Celtic in the persona of John Reid and Peter Lawwell (possibly McBride?) have spoken out against chants and songs that bring the club into disrepute, but it is hardly surprising that the young fans take no notice of this when they see their cousins across the city belting out the most offensive, racist and bigoted poison in their tens of thousands without censure domestically.

When I have complained (on numerous occassions) of the racist Famine Song I have made this point. That as well as being deeply offended, I am being selfish, because I can see that if it is unpunished and worse still, not even commented on, then our young fans who in the main are a credit to us will push the envelope of what is acceptable.

This is not whataboutery it is about even-handedness.

Tens of thousands of their fans sing vicious racist, sectarian anthems at the CIS Cup Final for 120 minutes and Kenny MacAskill and the match commander Campbell Corrigan praise them for it.

Tom English said on Radio Scotland at the weekend that he took the CIS singing up with the SPL but is still awaiting a reply to his letter.

Leave aside the songs and think if such blatant double standards were applied to any other area of life, would you put up with it?

Your neighbour parks on double yellow lines and traffic warden walks by. You do it and your car gets towed away and destroyed.

This new legislation has revealed the sore that is below the scab and either Celtic fight it or they die. IMHO of course.

  28. By all means engage with non-Celtic supporting people. By all means call the radio stations and the newspapers. I know some people like it. Some are very good too.

Just, please, make the point that Celtic face no legitimate claim of racist, sectarian or any otherwise illegal singing. The songs are legal. They may become illegal in the future, but so might drinking whisky.

  29. Huns tax case runs into January BBC article below…

A tribunal dealing with an appeal by Rangers FC against a disputed tax bill and penalties totalling about £49m is set to continue into January.

The First Tier Tribunal in Edinburgh was expected to conclude on Wednesday. It has now been listed to take place on 16, 17 and 18 January 2012.

The disputed bill and penalties relates to Rangers use of Employee Benefit Trusts to pay employees.

The club faces the prospect of administration if it loses this case.

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) claims that £35m is owed by Rangers in unpaid tax with a further £14m due in interest and penalties.

HMRC has also had £2.8m of Rangers assets ring-fenced over a separate tax bill which the club is understood to be disputing.

Former board members Donald McIntyre and Martin Bain have also taken Rangers to court to freeze a total of £780,000 of assets pending the outcome of their damages claims.
