Regional League concept gets an airing

257

Interested to read that “issues, such as the Regional League concept” were discussed at the 29 club European Club Association meeting, held at Celtic Park yesterday.  12 of the 13 nations present would all benefit from the regionalisation of their leagues, while Wales (and England) already participates in a regional league.

We’ve seen a few campaigns similar to this – with the objective of delivering Celtic out of the confines of Scottish football, but this approach is different.  It seeks to build an alliance with similarly disenfranchised clubs across the continent.  The Austrians, Czechs and Slovaks would benefit from playing in Germany, the Scandinavians would benefit by grouping together, while the former Yugoslavian teams have long acknowledged the merits of resurrecting a Yugoslav-regional league.

I was a wee bit surprised that the “Regional League concept” discussions were acknowledged.  I heard they’ve been on-going for some time but no one wanted to discuss in the public domain.  This will have been a considered comment, designed to move the debate beyond those present at the meeting.

Many thanks for the tremendous response to our auction appeal to build a fourth school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  The kitchen will be at Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which has 909 children enrolled.  Will bring you more details when I have them.

The auction is for two debenture hospitality seats at the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Club sponsor, Magners.  It closes Friday morning, so keep an eye on it here.

Linda Croker has asked me to pass on her sincere thanks for all the support received for Sean’s Trust and the memory of St John Doyle from the CQN community. I know the last year has been enormously difficult for the family but your many small gestures have meant a lot.

  1. I don’t understand the amount of energy so many of our support put into worrying about our club acknowledging Rangers FC. Whether you the call them The Rangers, This Rangers or THAT Rangers, they’re still called Rangers, play at Ibrox, wear royal blue and are followed by the same knuckle draggers singing about being up to their knees in our blood.

I don’t give a damn what our club calls them in a match program I just want our board to fund a team that hammers them on the pitch!

Although admittedly I wouldn’t be averse to the stadium announcer playing the Cranberries’ Zombie while reading out their teamsheet.

    29 October, 2014

The figure stated last year was about £500,000. I questioned it at the time and did a back of a fag packet calculation.

    For 2013 the figures are:

The living wage was £7.45 per hour.

21 and over £6.31 so an additional £1.14 per hour.

18 to 20 £5.03 so an additional £2.42 per hour.

Under 18 £3.72 so an additional £3.73 per hour.

1st Yr Apprentice £2.73 so an additional £4.72 per hour.

    For 2014 the figures are:

The living wage is £7.65 per hour.

21 and over £6.50 so an additional £1.15 per hour.

18 to 20 £5.13 so an additional £2.52 per hour.

Under 18 £3.79 so an additional £3.86 per hour.

1st Yr Apprentice £2.73 so an additional £4.92 per hour.

There are about 120 employees on minimum wage, and we don’t know the age profile of these employees. We also need to make some assumptions such as 40 hour weeks (but as Bankier had the temerity to state as those on the minimum wage tended to have more than one job, this 40 hour week assumption is unlikely to be true).

    If everyone is over 21 years of age then the additional cost is 120 X 1.15 X 40 X 52 = £287,040

    If everyone is between 18 and 21 then the additional cost is 120 X 2.52 X 40 X 52 = £628,992

    If everyone is younger than 18 then the additional cost is 120 X 3.86 X 40 X 52 = £963,456

For the figure to be £500,000 the following would need to be about right:

    (1) All 120 employees were on 40 hours per week

    (2) The age profile would need to be something like 70 employees between 18 and 21 and 50 over the age of 21.

And this is all based on 2014 figures. The uplift from minimum wage to living wage in 2013 was less than it is now.

  3. MWD – Explain yourself properly then.

I agree withe every word of your post bar this statement:-

“Outside the Bigotted Together (c) coalition, no-one else believe their lies.”

I believe, implicitly, that prominent backers of the Yes campaign exerted pressure on the football bodies to ensure that there was no official death of the Ibrox institution announced in the run-up to the referendum. No proof but I believe it just as much as you attribute it to the other side.

    —————————————————————————————————————–

That may well have happened but that doesn’t mean that they actually believe the Big Lie. Even within the Bigotted Together coalition there will be some who would privately accept that the huns died in 2012 but will not admit it publicly.

  6. Burning bush,

Much more forensic than my efforts. I based mine on the premise that the people concerned were part-time,match-day employees.

    As,in fact,suggested by the second-income comment.

Your analysis, for me,is even more worrying. That we are paying minimum wage to full-time employees.

That is a shocking scenario to contemplate,IMO.

Would Mike Ashley be interested in a regional league?

    ===============

In one of the mad but brilliant Tommy in Glasgows calls to Imran Ahmed, Imran in a seemingly off the cuff remark commented that the potential in the Glasgow clubs lay in the massive hike in share price that would occur not if but WHEN Celtic and Rangers 2.0 were competing in a more lucrative environment. Surely this isn’t the long game thats been played the whole time? I think Ashley is capable of thinking this way but the rest of the spivs were out to make a fast buck in the shortest time possible.

Excellent post, mate. And I don’t often say that to you!

I will differ on one minor point,if you don’t mind.

I won’t watch or even read about any game we play against the huns, unless the truth is told. But I won’t punish Celtic by turning my back the rest of the time.

Now that isn’t a criticism of your stance-far from it. I admire your strength to take that decision. And you won’t be alone.

I simply-!- believe that by doing so,the huns win.

    Canny have that,bud.

  12. Celtic have an exciting striker on loan from Man City. John Guidetti has started to score for fun. He is here till the end of the season when his contract expires. Celtic can secure him on a Bosman in January, as can any other club. The player has already intimated that he would be very interested in a permanent switch to Celtic at the end of his loan term.

The only way Man City can demand a fee for the player is if he were

to be transferred in the January window, but as he is contracted to a Celtic loan deal until the end of May, City cannot sell him unless Celtic agree to rescind the loan deal.

I suspect City know that. So while the Celtic support are enjoying the rise of a new star, what does the SMSM do? They make up a story that City want 5m for him. No quotes from City in the story. Just an idea presented as fact.

I wouldn’t expect Celtic FC to fall for that one. Looking at some of the comments on CQN, a lot of the supporters are a lot less relaxed about this non-story.

  13. Anyone who watched that game last night and thinks that mob could give us a game, I’m afraid I have to tell you that you know absolutely feck all about football, but you are entitled to your opinion of course, lurking HUNS GIRFUYs

  18. Living Wage

I understand that many of those being paid less than the living wage are part time match day workers such as turnstyle operators and catering staff. Therefore the cost of implementation would be much less than the £500k quoted.

Even if £500k is the correct figure, it equates to less than ten bob on the price of a match day ticket which I’m sure most Celtic fans would be happy to pay. The manner in which the board have dealt with the issue is appalling and they have scored a massive PR own goal. Look how gleefully the MSM have portrayed us as skinflints esp in the light of PLs massive remuneration package.

More than a club? Aye, right.

  22. Are the workers at Celtic Park organised for this fight on the living wage? Is there a spokes person who worked there speaking for the workers? Or is this driven by malcontents just to use a big stick on PETER Lawwell and the board? And please don’t go Tonto on me, it’s a genuine question as I don’t know the details,.

I would not seek to dissuade you from doing so.

    Just a point to note:-

Sevco (name metamorphisis of Rangers re-registered as) aka the Rangers Internation Football Club (the new company and club registered name after some manipulation of companies) are already a member of the SFPL (club is a member of SPFL) albeit SFPL Championship (they are a SPFL championship[ club) rather than SFPL Premiership (not an SPFL Premiership club) and I believe they already played in SPFL League 1 (they were an SPFL League 1 club last season).

    (ok so far baldrick?)

Attendance this year and last year at Celtic park (going to Celtic Park for home Celtic games during peroid of what has already been explained in above paragraph – which I am sure an intelligent reader would not require me to re-explain) is and was tacit acceptance of the metamorphisis! (is silent agreement of RIFC) Like it or lump it guys (by attending since restructuring you have accepted TRIFC by silent agreement as it is the same structure our club is in) . Your too late to be whinging (stop your moaning banana heid).

    (still ok Baldrick banana heid)

Also attendance at Scottish and League Cup (going to and supporting Celtic in domestic cup competition) fixtures since their acceptance into the 3rd division of old structure (from time they joined scottish football league structure in 3rd division after liquidation) was also acceptance of the metamorphisis (was silent acceptance of the entity as you supported both domestic cup competitions financially).

    (you there now?)

So. Were does that leave you in reply to your first post to me.

Glad to have helped straighten out your banana though.

Never knew what to think of the whole cross atlantic league concept – with away games becoming too much for fans to attend.

    However, Scottish Football is dead.

Celtic are fast becoming the apprenticeship for medicore, small English clubs not even necessarily the top league.

We need innovation – the solution isnt going to come from inside the box, we have to look outside.

If its something as radical as this – then lets throw absolutely everything at making it happen.
