Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

  1. The Hun who ate all the pies just popped up on Sky to tell us he bought Shares and when he is long gone the Shares will be passed down through his family. Unfortunately I hold a few lovely looking Share Certificates myself for Companies long gone so I know how the family will feel re TFPLG’s legacy,

  6. After making a personal apology to Rangers, directors at The Gable Endies then released a statement of their own.

“Following our match against Rangers last Saturday it was brought to our attention two pages within the programme referred to several Rangers players transferred from “oldco” to “newco” and indeed ignored the history of Rangers Football Club over 140 years.

“Due to time restraints in producing the programmes our programme editor had accepted the pages submitted by our correspondent however Montrose Football Club readily accept any content printed within the programme must be our responsibility.

“At no time was the information on players or the club printed to create a slight to anyone connected with Rangers Football Club or indeed ignore a proud and successful history therefore, Montrose Football Club very much regrets the pages included may have caused offence and we unreservedly apologise to Rangers Football Club, the management, players and supporters if they felt this was the case.

“Last Saturday’s match was played in a great atmosphere and spirit therefore we are equally saddened these pages caused offence.”

    Auldheid,

a couple of thing I disagree on

I am talking about countries with a similar population are getting more regardless of how it is sold.

Also the match goers are becoming the armchair fans, but she is right about one thing its what they are willing to pay, however I dont believe its what the fans think its worth rather what the execs think its worth and its got to the stage where they’ll take whatever is put on the table as I’ve been saying, if “stick it” is not in the vocabulary then expect to be rid rotten

  9. CELTIC´S recent victories over Spartak Moscow and Arbroath have guaranteed that Neil Lennon and his squad are set to make a little piece of history when the new year dawns.

This will be the first season in over 40 years that the Hoops have gone beyond Christmas and still been involved in all four major competitions that they entered at the start of the season.

In fact, you have to go back to the heady days of Jock Stein and season 1968/69 to register a campaign when this actually occurred. Naturally, the Celts were actively engaged in a tussle at the top of the league and by the end of 1968, they led the table from Dundee United by two points.

The Scottish Cup ´Road to Hampden´ would get underway on January 25 and Stein´s men had a quarter-final tie in the European Cup against AC Milan to look forward to in February, courtesy of a 6-2 aggregate victory over Red Star Belgrade.

What made this season unique at the time was the issue with the Scottish League Cup. Celtic had reached the final and were due to play Hibernian in a game that was always booked in for an Autumn date, but a fire at Hampden in October that completely destroyed the offices and one of the dressing rooms forced a postponement until the Spring. It meant that the Bhoys literally had everything to play for at the start of 1969.

Many historians will point to season 2002/03 as a time when Martin O´Neill´s Celtic were still involved in the League, Scottish Cup, League Cup and the UEFA Cup, but the crucial difference is that Celtic had not entered the latter tournament at the outset of the season.

O´Neill´s men were ultimately Seville-bound because they had failed to get past FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League qualifier in August.

For the record, the Celts lost out narrowly to AC Milan in 1969 but went on to complete a domestic treble, a feat that would not be repeated by any Celtic side until Martin O’Neill’s first season of 2000/01.

  10. Mr Sim said: “It was an error which happened due to time constraints. We understand that it may have offended Rangers fans and that is why we have apologised unreservedly.

  20. What’s ignored is that although being zombified in turd division, the clout, outwith the ref frat, and Sfa,spl, sfl, sfpa, eca, uefa, of the organised militant loyalist faction who have attempted and in some cases succeeded in silencing the truth.

  21. Auldheid,

Your daughter is bang on the money. BT would be a welcome competitor to the current rights holders. Sadly, I can’t see it happening. The current CEO of BT is on our board, so I imagine our directors are well aware of the maximum potential of Scottish TV rights,

Since I was a wee boy, pre Jock Stein, I’ve been convinced that we need to find a way out of the Scottish league. First to escape the referees, now to seek a quantum of income to allow us to compete on a European scale.

“don’t think we can. Unless we can convince the other clubs to break with EUFA; their rules say that we can’t broadcast a match at three on a Saturday because neighbouring countries can pick the signal up. Pretty sure that is accurate.”

I think you must be picking me up wrong, I am saying kill the tv deal for two years and give football back to the supporters and see how that works, so no live broadcasing only highlights, that way traditional times and days.

and a wee point about uefa rules and broadcasting, Celtic TV broadcasts games at 15:00 o’clock abroad, its the sky deal that stops these being broadcast to England and Ireland no uefa, I think.
