Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

  1. A condition of Celtic involvement in any other league , be it the EPL , Atlantic league or under whatever guise must be that Sevco are not part of the deal.

They must be left to rot in hell.

Once that is the case I would be happy to look at any structure that would raise the standards for our club!

    Hail Hail

  2. The Clown has issued another Statement again, he is almost begging for a few quid at this stage, This entire share issue process between Cenkos and expenses could cost between 500k and a million. If the Zombies stump up little more then 2 million t’will leave them with precious little to remove the asbestos from Ibrox. I remain totally sceptical about the Institutional Pledges. You can see already one of the top investors gave them a Loan of 200k for a few months and charged them an Administration Fee of 50k. These guys are shysters, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Ibrox & Murray Park are sold off to a seperate Company and rented back to R*ngers International at an exorbitant rent. Stupid Zombies.

    Auldheid,

spreading the wealth by having supporters turning up to games is the best and most entertaining way, having reread you post I might have misunderstood your point, but the bottom line is tv does not give enough to the game to justify the power it has.

    ==========================

Its complicated in that Sky do not pay the SPL enough, but pay the EPL – our player wage competitors in the same market country (the UK) – more than enough to give Sky the power.

That is what has relegated Scottish football in terms of ability to attract and keep quality players. Scotland simply cannot attract enough supporters through the door to compete with what a player can earn next door.

So we need to find ways of a) getting more of the share Sky pay and unless the whole of Scotland’s population boycotts Sky they are not going to pay the EPL less and pay us more.

The only TV area where Celtic can get more from the support is Celtic TV and that is limited to overseas supporters who get a great deal with all games for around £3.50 a game compared to SB Holders who pay £27 a game for home games only plus getting there. In this narrow area only Celtic supporters can spread the load of watching their team play.

If however you are saying Celtic would get more by simply not allowing live broadcast via Sky because Sky pay peanuts tous, I read a case on the Celic Trust site making the same argument and it was persuasive.

    Auldheid,

never read the trust article, will do though.

My whole premise is based on complete overhaul of the scottish football system, there is no need for 4 divisions, bigger divisions and a properly run competition giving everyone the right to equitable treatment would improve competition across the board, no telly for a couple of years as an experiment would work on two levels, the supporters would believe they are being reengaged back to the top of the priority list and would be able to plan their season properly, with traditional match days and times.

TV companies would also have to reasses what they bring to the game and their place on that priority list.

If sucessful the tv companies would have to meet the leagues requirements rather than the other way round, simply tell them, your deal is with us, and we are not interested in your international scheduling, we do not change scheduling to suit other countries, get used to it.

I think it is a winner, now keep this to yourself but I’ve been wrong before :o)

but I think its worth a shot, bring the game back to the supporters

The ECA is a trade association, a membership body, not a regulatory body. It’s opinion is just that, an opinion and is worth no more and no less than any other opinion.

Indeed but any port in a storm to the hard of thinking. Pity for them UEFA run the game and not the ECA, they could still be in Europe :).

  21. Apologies if already posted…

“FURIOUS Rangers fans have demanded an apology from Montrose after the Links Park side poked fun at the Ibrox side in the match programme from Saturday’s Division Three clash.

Supporters took offence at the description of Rangers in the introduction to the team in the programme, which read: “Playing their first season in Division Three, The Rangers are a newco of the now defunct Glasgow Rangers.

“Currently top of the table, they will be hoping to go on to seal the title and clinch their first silverware.”

    ……..

THE CHAIRMAN of Montrose FC has offered an unreserved apology to Rangers following the publication of information poking fun at the Ibrox club in the matchday programme for the two sides’ clash at Links Park on Saturday.

A statement issued by Charles Green today said: “I and all our supporters were dismayed by some of the content of the matchday programme at Montrose on Saturday which was clearly intended to ridicule our Club.

“I have spoken personally to the Chairman of Montrose today and he and his fellow directors have offered Rangers an unreserved apology which I am happy to accept.

Looks like the MSM mantra re ‘the rangers’ is finally paying off…

I don’t want to ne negative, because we would all like matches on a Saturday at three etc., but our clout is a bit limited, and smaller (!) clubs such as Man U have set the precedent of playing on a Sunday at half four and so on.
