Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

I expect it would be down to how you approached the issue, IMO it would be pointless bringing any litigation proceedings in scotland however doing it through the city legal processes would be successful, unfair advantage in rigged markets would not be as hard to prove especially with the existing evidence, I think :o)

Sorry, had to do some work. A British Isles League set up would presumably have regional levels as per Germany meaning that Arbroath would never have to play Exeter or Glentoran. Above that regionalising would be the Isles League of ‘top’ promoted clubs.

I agree on the costs of home games being too expensive and would prefer the German model rather than the English one where you can get into a top game for 10 euros.

Also agree on the SFA but we know why Celtic FC won’t follow through. Celtic FC are complicit in the operation of the SFA and have absolutely no desire to drive change at all.

    Some good posts today.

Amazing how many diverse ideas there are, but as you say money is at the root of everything, I like some would rather we went back to the days of yore, when there were other clubs outwith Glasgow fighting for honours, like monteblanco alluded to, but due to the lack of TV money, Tv money which is not worth a dam, but money all the same, there is no chance of said money increasing due to the small population we have to vacate.

    To where is another matter.

I agree the suits give not a jot about the support, and that is the reason as you outlined is the desire to get out.

They want a sanatised support, a prawn sandwich brigade, not a Green Brigade support, and if they do get their wish who knows what the future holds.

My preference would be the total dismantling of the sfa/spl and start again, a start that is fair and equal, an honest refereeing system, a system that allows footballers to play football.

An end to the masonic cabal.

Then we might see the crowds embrace the game again.

The supporters of the other clubs will not turn out to watch a rigged game, the hard core do, cos they are the hard core.

Our support do, but it’s dwindling away, and it will be the hard core left if change is not forthcoming.

  7. Hi Everyone in Celtic Land

I have been advocating for yonks for us to get out of Scotland, so hopefully any new structure should be welcomed. The main thing though in my opinion is to absolutely ensure we do so without rankers. We don’t need them as sure as Dolly Parton sleeps on her back. Make no bones about it, they will do all they can to capitalise on our glory, it cannot be allowed to happen, end of!

ASonOfDan is close to my thinking on this. They are not saying people with the wrong skin colour or the of the wrong religion are not good enough to represent their club, but they are saying that their club is about more than football; it represents a strong, distinct community.

If you want to go there and live there and be part of that community you can represent its football club, no matter where you are from. If you want to helicopter your way in and out of training like, say, Michael Owen, or drive four hours there and back up the motorway like, say, Lou Macari, then the answer is no.

yep agreed with most of that, but the regionalisation set up would still have regional associations which will be affiliated, like you I cant see any association with a UEFA\FIFA vote giving that up without a fight, however I they are weakened I cant see how they could hold onto that power.

I am not in favour of a british association as it would be dominated by the EFA to the point were only their interests would be served.

And I agree on Celtic’s self interest at the sfa I expect they are as hostile to transparency as any

  19. ROW Z - Let Celtic Flourish by the Cleansing of the 'den! on

The reality is that 30 years ago major funding sources were people coming in through the gates. That allowed clubs wherever they were to improve based on their own attraction. Now the major source of revenue (domestic and european) comes from TV coverage. People who by and large don’t come through the gate and have no desire to do so.

If we as a club want to truly be in that bracket year on year we must compete in a TV franchise that offers that income. For all that Benfica and Ajax offer models the reality is that they are not winning these trophies nor are they in the finals on any regular basis.

So, for now, money is king if you want to be big in europeland and if you want to be big you need to be in a TV franchise that will pay for the structure of it currently.

It is true that the majority of those generated funds have fallen into the pockets of players and that these are probably excessive for what the product is. Is the trend reversible or changeable and if so, do any of the current powerbrokers have any desire for change?

I think not in the main.

    TET,

I’m going to use a phrase I hate

We need to get back to basics, there I said it :o)

tv money is not good enough for the power it has over our game

Bin tv coverage for a couple of seasons getting back to alternative home and away 15:00 o’clock kick off and see if it brings back the support.

Clubs coud then maybe develop their own media set ups for extranational viewers with the permission of the rest of the clubs.

  22. ROW Z things change.

Sponsorship, TV money and gate money have fallen sharply in Italy and will not recover.

UEFA changed qualification for the CL in recognition of its dwindling appeal.

Celtic benefited from that and will no doubt be trumpeted by UEFA as an example of what is possible. But we shouldn’t take advantage of UEFA’s kindly gesture.

We were bang out of order winning it in ’67. To do so again would be downright rude. :-)

  23. ROW Z – Let Celtic Flourish by the Cleansing of the ‘den!

Good analysis which is why we need to get more by whatever means from watchers as opposed to attendees.

On your last point there are signs that EPL club owners are begining to realise that unless they set a wage ceiling, the next TV income boost will still end up in players pockets and leave the owners well short of any return.

Football must be the only business in the world where employees dictate the wage and the owners and customers pay the full price no questions asked.

Technology is changing fast. At some point the TV companies will be unable to control streaming and will find that the remaining suckers prepared to float their boat dwindle slowly. The only way to burst the streams will be to stop recording or for wide net availability to be cheap.

I think that is more likely to force change than anything else. Whether what emerges is for better or poorer remains outstanding.

Agreed, but until the corruption has gone, the support will not return IMO.

Aberdeen could and would fill their ground every week if they though they had a chance of winning, as would the other clubs.

The clubs seem reluctant to do anything, it will be up to the supporters as ever.

And the only way we can do it, is to walk away from the corruption, then maybes they will pay heed.
