Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

  1. The CQN Annual arrived at lunch time today. Now I know why people on here have been raving about it. Thanks for this wonderful publication. Will take great delight in reading it.

On another issue, has anyone ever contacted the Club about being harassed at games home or away? Has anyone at the club replied to you or investigated the issue raised? Has the Club taken action on your behalf?

  2. An Atlantic league with teams from Scotland, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden and Denmark would equal or better, in terms of population base and potential turnover, the big 5 leagues of England,Italy, Spain, Germany and France, thereby offering participants a more level playing field, in terms of sponsorship and the ability, eventually, of being able to compete at the highest level consistently, by dint of being able to attract better players. Celtic would thrive in that environment, remaining in the SPL, they will not.

It does not necessarily mean a hike in admission charges and a reliance on corporate business. Just because you say it does not make it so.

The Celtic fan is not marginalised.

I was a Celtic fan since when I was 6 years old, I did not have means to access Celtic Park then. I had to rely on an adult lifting me over. I was still a Celtic fan

I was a Celtic fan all through my school and further education years. That I did not have the cash to support Celtic at Celtic park did not make me any less of a Celtic man.

Throughout my 20’s,30′ s and early 40’s circumstances and commitments meant that I did not see my beloved Celtic as often as I wished. It did not make me any less of a supporter.

So to suggest that if Celtic were to participate in a new adventure, where access to further revenue streams, which would further enhance our great club, would somehow marginalise our support is quite frankly BS.

It is not inevitable that prices would soar.

It is not inevitable that our board would use any reconstruction to marginalise support, in fact it is ludicrous to even consider that.

Our board, IMO, try to maximise Celtic, the club, at all times.

Being human they make mistakes sometimes. They do not sit in the boardroom thinking up ways to alienate our support. Now that would be some conspiracy theory.

But hey, don’t let positivity and an opportunity for progress get in the way of your out dated politically motivated, negative agenda.

    Auldheid,

spreading the wealth by having supporters turning up to games is the best and most entertaining way, having reread you post I might have misunderstood your point, but the bottom line is tv does not give enough to the game to justify the power it has.

  4. British Isles League would be great for Scottish and English football at the lower levels. Would like to see two top leagues with no regionalisation.

Four or more other regional leagues including the regionalisation of the English League.

We could hope for Celtic at the top table and others like Aberdeen, Hibs or Dundee Utd at the next national level. Good to see them play the likes of Blackburn, Bolton and Blackpool.

Three team relegation and promotion with play offs.

Unfortunately cannot see the EPL agreeing as the only gain they would get is us. They do not give a jot for the good of the game in the rest of the country.

Sky though could well be favourable to this set up.

  5. Row Z Italian business spotted long before anyone else the opportunity for very cheap TV advertising via sponsorship of football clubs. The rest of the world has now passed them.

In your internet scenario the asset for sale will be the stadium hoardings and the jerseys. Multiplied by success.

All this conjecture over bailing out of Hootsmon is beyond me. Ma heid is nippin’. Those that stalk the corridors of power at UEFA, and who are in cahoots with their comrades at FIFA care only of their continued revenue stream from media wealth. Regular junkets at five star resorts in exotic locales, funded by the armchair punter. It must be a great gig if you can join the old boys.

I like to live in the now and appreciate what I have in life that is immediately tangible and real.

From where I sit in the window of my cozy coffeshop, all is well with my Celtic world. The huns are an embarrassment to themselves. I really couldn’t care less about them. Corruption and naiveté what a cocktail for an infinite supply of Yultide humour.

Thursday will provide a groundswell of Timternet activity and there will be at least two gingers on the planet ( I’m one of them…) wearing green who’s chest will swell with pride. Soon another team will visit Paradise, coffers bursting at the seams with their media/sugar daddy money and expecting to roll us over.

    Why not!

Not sure that the French would be in favour ‘tho. If we were to include the Dutch and the Belgians, that might swing it.

CHARLES GREEN has today issued the following statement regarding an article in the matchday programme at Saturday’s away game with Montrose.

He said: “I and all our supporters were dismayed by some of the content of the matchday programme at Montrose on Saturday which was clearly intended to ridicule our Club.

“I have spoken personally to the Chairman of Montrose today and he and his fellow directors have offered Rangers an unreserved apology which I am happy to accept.

“We were made extremely welcome at Montrose on Saturday and the club’s hospitality was fantastic, as has been our experience throughout the SFL this season.”

The board refuse to rule out a joint sponsorship deal.

Once you go down that road there’s no doubt the board would argue that it would be in the shareholders’ interests to accept that the huns have an unbroken time line.

    It’s all about the ££££.

so 6% rise this year while season ticket sales are falling financial masterstroke

sanitisation of the support in preparation for what

I know plenty of people who spent all those years going to the games home and away who cant afford it anymore, they’ve been priced out the market, more than just a club eh

Low paid, no room at the inn, tough get a better job but you can still call yourself a Celtic supporter if you want. The corporation has decided we dont need you, in fact we could have sorted the game in scotland but we’ve decided its no worth the bother, theres more money elsewhere, ok it’ll cost a bit more for the supporters to follow their team but so what we’ve already made it clear what we think about people who cant afford it, get a better job, more than just a club, tough.

Repeat the corporate mantra after me

    Further revenue streams

    Further revenue streams

    Further revenue streams

The game is nothing without the support is out moded out dated its old fashioned notions like that will be the ruin of the corporation too negative for our new forward thinking mantra.

Pie in the sky drivel about not believing price increases are inevitable are for the deluded who will stand by that claim right up until the prices rise, then instead if admitting they were wrong they will then try change the argument to justifying why they were right all along and how the club now needs to price more out of the game, with drivel about if we want to compete then we need to pay for it.

Aye its negative, its also realist no dressing up promises without consequences, it wont be as rosey a picture as the deluded like to paint, and I’ll admit it wont be as doom and gloom as I paint, but I truely believe my picture will be closer to the truth, a santised corporate support fondly remembering the old days when supporters used to sing and get passionate about their team, even worse remember when they were allowed to.
