Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

Mark from Aberdeen was brilliant- questioned BFDJ blind loyalty and questioned presumption of Rangers never going back in to administration/ liquidation. Gave fantastic examples of Portsmouth , Leeds Utd and the Huns themselves as clubs who no one thought could go bust..

It’s a great pity but perhaps understandable that Montrose have apologised to Green and Sevco for having the temerity to state the truth in their match programme.

Stating the truth about that mob is enough to endanger your personal safety ,as others have found.

The football authorities and the law in Scotland are reaping what they have sown by cowering in fear of Green, McCoist and the mindless hyenas who sit slabbering at their feet.

    stevebhoy,

be as negative as you want pal :o)

but my main point is, we have to be brave and try no the tv experiment or highlight deal only. (just added that:o)

then reasses at the end of the experiment, if it turns out successful then we have a very strong negotiating hand.

As for manure, again my point was, we dont care about other national schedules and what they find acceptable, if sky were willing to pay proportionally similar money then I expect it might be worth the inevitable fall off of supporters again as boards will get greedy again.

Further, I’d expect a few clubs to fail during the experiment and I dont actually think that would be a bad thing, there are too many and rationalisation of unsustainable clubs needs to happen.

  11. Already this season Celtic have played 34 games, Apart from International Breaks the last time the team had 7 days between matches was between 11th and 18th August. Just shows what Lenny & The Bhoys have achieved.

  13. Was listening to SSB the other night when a Celtic fan rung up and said that contrary to what you hear in the MSM, this season there has been more supporters attending Parkhead than there has been at Ibrox. OK, he used the term sevco when referring to ‘the rangers’, however was quite surprised that rather than debate the issue with him they cut him off! What a shower, zero credibility.

My wee lassie who works in the sports intelligence business disagrees with you . :)

She wrote to me as follows a few months back.

” I’ve seen one or two people starting to float the argument that the current SPL TV deal compares poorly with other leagues around the world. That somehow the SPL has been underselling itself to broadcasters and it ought to have been achieving a much fairer price.

I’ve read arguments saying that based on match attendances around the various leagues, the SPL should be getting X amount more for its broadcast rights. This is a very weak argument as it ignores the main driver of increasing broadcast rights values: a competitive market! Plus the fact that a broadcaster’s customer is the armchair fan, not the match goer!

A league’s TV rights are only ever worth what a broadcaster is willing to pay (not what fans think their league is worth). If there is little or no competition, there is little a rights-holder (the league) can do. It can attempt to create competition by the way it packages it’s rights, or by threatening to create its own TV channel. (I know the SPL looked into this, do you know anything about why it was rejected? The Dutch league seem to have made it work but I would need to read around that to see how they’ve done it.)

That the SPL even managed to renegotiate its original five-year, £13m a year deal from 2009-10 to 2013-14 with Sky/ESPN, up to £15m a year for a new five-year deal which was supposed to kick in from 2012-13 onwards, is perhaps a minor bloody miracle given Sky and ESPN again colluded together to acquire the rights. It appears they faced no competition when they renewed at the end of last year.

If you remember back to the days of Setanta, when it was going head-to-head with Sky, the second contract it signed, a 4-year £125m deal covering 2010-11 to 2013-14, was quite an increase on the previous deal.

Of course if BT Vision were to enter the fray, it’s shown with its acquisition of the EPL rights that it is willing to take Sky on, the SPL would be tendering it’s rights in a competitive market again. Obviously it’s a different product without Rangers but at least it looks as though there may be actual competition for the rights. I haven’t mentioned ESPN because I think they will be out of the picture of any new deal as I won’t be surprised to see then exit the UK in the next year.

No idea what your standpoint is on this but I clearly needed a bit of a rant on this subject and you’ve been hit with it unfortunately”

In short there is not enough broadcasters competing to show our games.

  18. neil canamalar lennon hunskelper extrordinaire

I don’t think we can. Unless we can convince the other clubs to break with EUFA; their rules say that we can’t broadcast a match at three on a Saturday because neighbouring countries can pick the signal up. Pretty sure that is accurate.

Another fly in the ointment would be the dependency of our rivals on TV money – they already want a bigger share of that.

Better, I think, to go for an Atlantic League. Perhaps home supporters only. Saves on policing and encourages tv subscription…

Either that, or stay where we are and find a sugar daddy. Like Chucky, perhaps ;)

  19. William on snyde makes good points about the hypocrisy of the sfa when appointing grade 1 referees.

The past 20 years they have only appointed refs that are employed in professional occupations.
