Running past Orange Walk outperforms carb loading

400

I sat in a Foundation meeting with a group of Celtic fans on Saturday, it is beyond credible what is done in our name – and there’s much more to come.

Last week the Foundation appointed a Disability Sports Ambassador, while earlier this month, we saw the opening of Celtic Park Haiti, a magnificent assistance project in one of the world’s poorest countries. In the first week of this month the Foundation made news across the globe for leading the way in their response to the refugee crisis (well, the Washington Post covered it, even if some in our own backyard didn’t).

September started with the news that CLIC Sargent’s new Home from Home in Glasgow opened with the assistance of a £60k donation of your money. CLIC offer support for families coping with child cancer.

All this, just in September!

Ambition for the Foundation is limited to the practicalities of what’s possible to deliver. To this end, several dozen of us have signed up to compete (cough) for the Foundation in the Great Scottish Run on Sunday. For most of us, it takes many months’ hard work to get to the point that you’re lining up in George Square with 10k or a half marathon ahead of you.

I’m running the half marathon, my first time at an event over 10k (only done 3 of those). It’s been a summer on the roads, the highlight of which was the fastest recorded run up Airbles Road. Running in a Celtic T-shirt through a crowd watching an Orange Walk puts more energy in the legs than any amount of carb loading.

There are lots of ways you can participate in the work:

Here, for my linked donation page.

Here for Steve Gunn’s.

Here for Thomas Eman’s.

Here for Robert Doherty’s.

Here for Stephen Hewitt’s.

Here for Kenny O’Neill’s.

If you are doing the GSR for the Foundation and would like a shout out for donations, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Many thanks for your help, it’s appreciated.

  1. Guys! Guys! Guys!

please stop, refrain, pull back… etc. etc. etc. on the idea of getting rid of the offside rule.

Imagine the amount of woman who would then come along without this in place.

    Dinny be silly guys!

Bad enough having our Dina’s and Minxy’s.

Couldny handle any more high pitched wailing.

Whether it was offside or not is not as relevant as the fact that the BBC decided it was not worthy of comment.

I don’t think the rules are as defined as ” you are either offside or not”.

Surely it is still up to the referee if a player in an offside position is interfering with play.

Whilst cycling behind you for many miles I had to put up with an abundance of ` high pitched wailing.`followed by a sulphur like aroma .

Exactly! In a game with no goals and only two major incidents, they just – ahem – don’t bother to discuss one of them?

That was what made me think the call was maybe wrong. Normally they get the old line drawn on the screen to show offsides.

I did a refereeing course back in the 80s and got my badge ( one of fhe refs taking the course was Jimmy Duncan who had just reffed the game where Macca et al ended up in court) and ran the line in a few amateur games. I had very sharp eyesight and found offside easy as all you were instructed to do was keep in line with 2nd last man- unless it was a boot up the park the ball itself was usually in the corner of your left eye so spotting whether the attacker was onside when a ball was passed forward to near the 2nd last man was simple. Professionals are obviously way quicker than the pub games I was involved in but I would still exoect linesmen to get it right- though manifestly obviously they get offside decisions wrong simply because they are not concentrating on that second last man.

I think technology cannot come quickly enough – say three ‘appeals’ per match a la tennis or cricket- even if , in this instance, I think it would not have benefitted Celtic

  8. Jungle Jim –

‘Having said the above, the definitive cause of cramp is not really known’.

That’s disappointing. Couldn’t you make up some rubbish instead to support a spurious argument ?

That’s what most of us do here :-).

  9. Cramp – it’s all about the osmotic balance.

Cramp is common in pregnancy. So that may be the reason for Scottish footballers getting it so bad. half of them look pregnant.

    I tells yeez.

I have heard that about poachers hanging about the goals and cannot see it panning out like that though defensive tactics would be very different. Maybe we would not have our whole team back for corners we have to defend. MoonbeamsWD may have hit on the one serious flaw in my argument though☺

  11. I think Ciftci was just offside at the first header. That was my initial reaction from watching the game (on a not too clever sausage type thing in Canada.) Surprised that the BBC didn’t give us the line on the pitch and replays from every angle – I’m sure that would have been the case if the goal had been given.

We looked really good in the first half but not so in the second. I’m surprised James Forrest wasn’t given a spell on the right, think he and Lustig could have done some damage.

In the few minutes since I posted, it has been discovered that eating Abernethy biscuits is the main cause of muscle cramps. Research has shown that a man who once ate an aforementioned Abernethy also suffered from cramp some years later. Some cynics are yet to be convinced.

    That’s interesting.

Dunno if you saw the Tottenham – Man City game, but there were some shockers. The City goal was maybe inches offside so you can’t really spot that at speed.

The first Tottenham goal was about two yards off!

The third goal was from a free-kick so should have been easy to pick up as the play was static.

  14. Afternoon all.

I would have put money on us drawing Hearts at Tynecastle in the LC. I wonder if there will be a repeat of the sectarian chanting we had to endure on Saturday and that has gone unremarked, as far as I can see.

Just watched the “highlights” of the game on Sportscene. Very well edited, imo. Not ONE foul on James Forrest shown. They must have been in double figures. Mind you, the ref seemed to ignore quite a few. I see they didn’t rerun the disallowed goal and we only have MacLean’s word for it that the hand ball didn’t occur in the box. Looked very close to me. By the way, he may not be a supporter of the deid team but like anyone who wants a job in the Scottish sports media, he knows what to say and not to say. He was as culpable as Nevin when we were accused falsely of sectarian singing.

    Paul67,

The work of the Foundation is humbling. My congratulations and thanks to every last one of those involved.

I never saw the Spurs game at all- cannot comment. I mind years ago when C4 were showing Serie A and aftet a striker had been wrongly flagged Don Howe saying that at Arsenal they had used video to analyse and were amazed to discover that linesmen were nearly always WRONG even with decisions that had caused little discussion at the time. Howw was probably exaggerating – and his syntax made John Prescott seem as polished as George Orwell – but I would think he was basically right. The game is even quicker now so the case for technology seems even stronger. But FIFA do not seem interested

Your mention of Pat Nevin reminded me of how much I dislike him on TV. He is a sad figure of a man who will eventually suffer the consequences experienced by all others who are not true to themselves. I have no respect whatsoever for him and do not believe any of his opinions are honest.

One final comment before I go. I am pleased that we have drawn Hearts in the LC. All but the most blinkered will know that we were massively the better side on Saturday. To have such an early opportunity to reinforce that rather than have the dropped points hanging over us is a much better situation.

    Cheerio for now,

Well I have been on more often im the last two hours than in the last 2 months put together and it is because the bickering that made me step away seems to be in abeyance though I doubt this will last. Despite some debate about the ‘goal’ we did not get it seems as though the general consensus about Saturday is that we did not do too much wrong – for an hour at any rate- but just did not manage to win. And every single person would have bet on the qf draw being as it is.

  23. I believe if we win on Thursday then we will qualify from the group. Over to you Ronny.

Glad to get Hearts in the league cup. We’ll find it easier to score there.

  24. I read this site quite often and to be honest some of the stuff people post leaves me at a loss. But today to see the bickering about an offside decision made me sign up to leave a comment. As Celtic supporters we all know were the dodgy decisions come from and we should all know the way to beat them. The answer is to score more goals, they can’t chop them all off. Frankly this team is just not good enough to do that. I have watched worse Celtic teams than this one and at home especially they all scored goals. I don’t know if this current situation is down to poor players, poor management, poor tactics or lack of investment. What I do know is the way things are going there might not be 10 in a row. We need to buy a quality striker and a midfield playmaker and if they cut the mustard keep them not sell them as soon as a big offer comes in. Now I know the champions league money is a god send, but ask yourself would you rather watch league stages of the champions league or set another target for everyone to shoot at. To not get 10 in a row at this time would be a bigger crime than any committed on the other side of the city. We must be financially streets ahead of them at the moment so I say to all of you forget offside decisions and get your head into making sure our club custodians prioritise the holy grail of 10 in a row. Make them freeze in our shadow.

Anyone know how to change your blog moniker?

Seeing that I’ll soon be a resident of Southern Florida, and a member of the fine CSC there, I thought I’d change my location to something suiting.

Don’t want any of those accusations of having multiple blog “personalities”. ;-)
