Running past Orange Walk outperforms carb loading

400

I sat in a Foundation meeting with a group of Celtic fans on Saturday, it is beyond credible what is done in our name – and there’s much more to come.

Last week the Foundation appointed a Disability Sports Ambassador, while earlier this month, we saw the opening of Celtic Park Haiti, a magnificent assistance project in one of the world’s poorest countries. In the first week of this month the Foundation made news across the globe for leading the way in their response to the refugee crisis (well, the Washington Post covered it, even if some in our own backyard didn’t).

September started with the news that CLIC Sargent’s new Home from Home in Glasgow opened with the assistance of a £60k donation of your money. CLIC offer support for families coping with child cancer.

All this, just in September!

Ambition for the Foundation is limited to the practicalities of what’s possible to deliver. To this end, several dozen of us have signed up to compete (cough) for the Foundation in the Great Scottish Run on Sunday. For most of us, it takes many months’ hard work to get to the point that you’re lining up in George Square with 10k or a half marathon ahead of you.

I’m running the half marathon, my first time at an event over 10k (only done 3 of those). It’s been a summer on the roads, the highlight of which was the fastest recorded run up Airbles Road. Running in a Celtic T-shirt through a crowd watching an Orange Walk puts more energy in the legs than any amount of carb loading.

There are lots of ways you can participate in the work:

Here, for my linked donation page.

Here for Steve Gunn’s.

Here for Thomas Eman’s.

Here for Robert Doherty’s.

Here for Stephen Hewitt’s.

Here for Kenny O’Neill’s.

If you are doing the GSR for the Foundation and would like a shout out for donations, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Many thanks for your help, it’s appreciated.

  1. Paul67: The Foundation helps the Kibera Celtic Foundation in Kenya too. Kibera is the second largest slum in Africa and the KCF operates on the basis as our club when we were founded.

    Just thought I’d mention that.

  2. Used to know what constituted offside. Now I don’t really know.

It seems to be individual interpretation from the referee now.

It wasn’t to do with interpretation. He simply wasn’t offside. The two defenders on Bitton were both behind Ciftci when Bitton headed the ball on.

  4. Paul67 and othe GSR’s, I’ve ran the Glasgow Half 5 times (missing this year due to injury). If you’ve never done it before, it’s quite an experience.

    Some wee tips.

Don’t get there too early. George Square can be gie cold at that time of the morning, especially skiting about in shorts and a vest!

Don’t drink too much before the start. You’ll constantly be needing the toilet. Plenty of water out on the course. Stay hydrated on the way round.

At the start get yourself as far towards the front of the section you’re in as possible.

Running up Waterloo Street, try and stay to the right, because once you get over the hill the the road gets funnelled to the right creating a slight bottleneck.

Take it easy first 3/4 miles. The adrenalin will be pumping and a lot of people are wiped out by half way because of this. Consciously slow it down a bit.

Look forward to the finish. The finish these days is brilliant, along the Broomielaw and through the imposing stone gates onto Glasgow Green. Big long straight finish along an avenue of thousands of people. Even some grandstands!

Enjoy the day dudes, wish I was doing it. :(

I was puzzled why they didn’t replay the incident on Sportscene. After all it’s a major point in a game with no goals.

I figured it was probably because they knew it was a wrong call. Had it been offside they would have replayed it and drawn their line across to prove it.

In most cases offside is dictated by the position of the attacking player.

In our case it’s dictated by the colour of the strip the attacking player is wearing.

Helped when in need by a dodgy flag.

    Kevin McBride and Cadete,for example.

Personally, the worst I saw was the infamous New Year game in Jock’s last season. So many things wrong with it. The non-penalty award. The ref running to the spot-and dragging our exuberant players with him,in the belief that the Orange Bas…d had actually awarded it. The play on,and smirk that he did.

The clincher was Greig shouting-‘Gie me it,I waaaaant to score!’ When he was bliddy offside.

Cheating ba…..s,then,since and now. And long before.

They laughed at us then,GIRUY,what you gonna do about it? Must admit, schadenfreude is a hun word and tailor-made for them.

Was the “goal” on Saturday not ruled out for a perceived push from shift Key.

Was given for offside…Glancy pointed to assistant and then had hand raised to indicate indirect free kck for off side…if it was a foul by Ciftci would not have been indirect

One time I was on my bike for a wee cycle across the bridge turn right and off through clydebank.

Earphones in listening to the football as I pedalled along the old railway and canal path.

Got to beyond yoker mad squad of boys and dugs up on the railway shouting about something. Decides discretionary detour. Off the ramp . Into the old car park at the albion motorwork’s right into an orange walk.

Me with a dark green. Big White umbro target on the back.

    About turn.

Take my chances with the boys and dugs.

Turned out they were time givin the walkers abuse.

    Took the jaisket off anyways.

    Lives to peddle another day.

Don’t think so. The linesman’s flag went up. The ref seems to look over to the linesman before he disallows it. The ref would have had a better view of any push.

Sorry to disagree with those saying the disallowed goal should have stood but having looked at it a few times now it does still look a fraction offside to me as Ciftci is ahead of the two defenders challenging Bitton at the point NB heads with NC also being a fraction ahead of his own marker. I hate to say it but I think the linesmam got it right.

  15. I’ll tell you what was out of order on Saturday.

Charlie & the Bhoys playing the Barrowland. Trying to get a drink was as impossible as going to bed and waking up yesterday.

Definitely ahead of his own marker. To me he looks behind the furthest back of the two defenders on Bitton.

Marginal, but isn’t the benefit of the doubt not supposed to go to the attacking team?

  17. I was watching the rugby Saturday night with a friend and we were both discussing how often professional sportsmen go down with cramp. (The English hooker went down (tut! tut!) after 59 minutes).

Now in my playing days, many moons ago, I only suffered cramp 3 hours later whilst watching telly or whatever and only if it had been a hot day.

Jeez – I’ve even seen goalkeepers needing treatment for it.

Why does it affect the pro sportsman so much more than the amateur even given the increased pace they’re playing at?

  18. Glasstwothirdsfull

I have long since ,lost the thread when it comes to who is supposed to get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to offside I have to admit but in reality officials will almost always give it to the defenders whatever the current guidelines may be. As it is I think it is one where the linesman has had his flag up very early- I saw the flag was up before the ball was hit towards goal- which is actually, theoretically, good decisive officiating as it means there is ‘no doubt’ in the official’s mind. It would be interesting to know had the ‘goal’ been at the other end whether the BBC would have had the Hawkeye technology out to trya nd make us think Celtic got lucky somehow- because it was a damn close call. As it was I stand by my belief that the man with the flag called it right but I also think it was another fantastic argument for getting rid of offside all together. But that is another argument I guess.

It’s because he was so decisive that makes me think he was maybe looking only at Ciftci in relation to the defender closest to him and maybe not the other two.

Anyway, very close whichever way. Maybe also a case for technology to be used.

  20. There is no “benefit of the doubt” you are either off side or not….to be honest Saturday was too tight to call, and I don’t think you would have argued either way..it was that close.

  21. Jimbo67 – no offside?

Nah – that would just lead to poachers hanging round the goalpost (jaickets) to grab the glory, like at school.

Always thought the Dryborough Cup rules were a good compromise.

Professionals play at a level of intensity massively greater than their amateur counterparts. Even so, the vast majority of professionals do not suffer from cram.

Having said the above, the definitive cause of cramp is not really known. A combination of things are suspected (dehydration being the most mentioned) but no one knows for sure. Even so, observation and experience would suggest that effort put in and fitness levels attained would determine the chances of muscles cramping.
