Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

  1. the long wait is over on

Here’s my tuppence worth on the CQN layout.

Don’t change it. I love the fluidity and almost stream of consciousness of multiple conversations. It reflects real life company.

It also means that if I tune in at any time I will know exactly what is going on at any one time , not just in relation to Celtic but the world at large. It’s not just CQN it’s world news , WQN.

Multiple threads would detract from that. It’s CQN’s USP IMHO.

I also love the fact that any poster can ask advice about any place or topic and someone who knows what’s what will give their honest opinion freely and objectively.

My only suggestion – and it’s for posters rather than Paul – would be to recommend that if someone’s referring back to an earlier post they refer to the poster and time of the post – it’s easier to follow.

Overall please leave as – don’t change a winning formula.

According to Parents against Child Sexual Exploitation (PACE), a national charity focused on working with the victims of child grooming and their families, at least 10,000 British children are in the clutches of the gangs at any one time, and at least 1,000 new girls are being groomed by gangs each year.

But this is “just the tip of the iceberg,” according to a document published by the House of Commons, which estimates that at least 20,000 British children are at risk of sexual exploitation by grooming gangs.

Meanwhile, prosecutions are few and far between. The report calculates that for every man convicted of such crimes, there are between two to ten other men who were directly implicated, but for whom there was insufficient evidence to secure a conviction. “If this is true,” the authors write, “it means that with this crime there are very many perpetrators getting away with it.”

Correct, sir. You’re no Henry Higgins.

  7. BB05 @19.58

So, in my ignorance of Scottish politics, I failed to note the momentous occasion of Campbell Martin’s expulsion/resignation from the SNP.

So instead of writing SNP stalwart, I should have said ex-SNP stalwart. Now he is merely an SNP supporter commenting on party matters from outwith. I assume, I am correct now and that my ignorance has not prevented me from noting the momentous news that he has joined Labour, The Lib Dems, the Greens, UKIP or the Tories.

As a denial of SNP allegiance, that was quite weak.

  8. Sorry, but it is an absurd idea to limit subjects that are allowed to be discussed on the blog.

For a start, who is going to monitor the blog and remove all posts that do not comply?

I scroll past a lot of the political debates and some other subjects. I have an interest in politics and lots of other topics, but not necessarily while I am on CQN, so sometimes I read and take part, sometimes I scroll past and ignore. No big deal and certainly no need to restrict the range of topics that are permissible. That would just demean the blog greatly.

Irrelevant? Actually Bob Kelly would probably have agreed with you in this instance, but not on other cases originating in Eastern Europe. The fact is Celtic FC are going next week to a country that has just been thoroughly condemned by the ECHR for its involvement in the War on Terror which it is not involved in. For its involvement in a holy war, a crusade according to an American President, against those abducted of a faith which I suspect simply does not exist inside its’ borders. Feel free to inform me of all things football if you prefer, I happen to think it is worth mentioning in context. And, for the record, I will not be asking you for permission to do so any time soon!

  24. A Celtic Fan’s view of the Gaza situation (with thanks to alvysinger of The Huddleboard)

Frankie Boyle’s open letter to the BBC

Obviously, it feels strange to be on the moral high ground but I feel a response is required to the BBC Trust’s cowardly rebuke of my jokes about Palestine.

As always, I heard nothing from the BBC but read in a newspaper that editorial procedures would be tightened further to stop jokes with anything at all to say getting past the censors.

In case you missed it, the jokes in question are:

“I’ve been studying Israeli Army Martial Arts. I now know 16 ways to kick a Palestinian woman in the back.”

“People think that the Middle East is very complex but I have an analogy that sums it up quite well. If you imagine that Palestine is a big cake, well… that cake is being punched to pieces by a very angry Jew.”

I think the problem here is that the show’s producers will have thought that Israel, an aggressive, terrorist state with a nuclear arsenal, was an appropriate target for satire.

The Trust’s ruling is essentially a note from their line managers. It says that if you imagine that a state busily going about the destruction of an entire people is fair game, you are mistaken. Israel is out of bounds.

The BBC refused to broadcast a humanitarian appeal in 2009 to help residents of Gaza rebuild their homes.

It’s tragic for such a great institution but it is now cravenly afraid of giving offence and vulnerable to any kind of well drilled lobbying.

I told the jokes on a Radio 4 show called “Political Animal”. That title seems to promise provocative comedy with a point of view.

In practice the BBC wish to deliver the flavour of political comedy with none of the content. The most recent offering I saw was BBC2’s “The Bubble”. It looked exactly like a show where funny people sat around and did jokes about the news. Except the thrust of the format was that nobody had read the papers.

I can only imagine how the head of the BBC Trust must have looked watching that, grinning like Gordon Brown having his prostate examined.

The situation in Palestine seems to be, in essence, apartheid. I grew up with the anti apartheid thing being a huge focus of debate. It really seemed to matter to everybody that other human beings were being treated in that way. We didn’t just talk about it, we did things, I remember boycotts and marches and demos all being held because we couldn’t bear that people were being treated like that.

A few years ago I watched a documentary about life in Palestine. There’s a section where a UN dignitary of some kind comes to do a photo opportunity outside a new hospital.

The staff know that it communicates nothing of the real desperation of their position, so they trick her into a side ward on her way out. She ends up in a room with a child who the doctors explain is in a critical condition because they don’t have the supplies to keep treating him.

She flounders, awkwardly caught in the bleak reality of the room, mouthing platitudes over a dying boy.

The filmmaker asks one of the doctors what they think the stunt will have achieved.

He is suddenly angry, perhaps having just felt at first hand something he knew in the abstract. The indifference of the world.

“She will do nothing,” he says to the filmmaker. Then he looks into the camera and says: “Neither will you”.

I cried at that and promised myself that I would do something. Other than write a few stupid jokes I have not done anything. Neither have you.

Peter Burns, last I heard, was quite sick. Living in a monastery/retreat in California.

Peter Rafferty (Raffles), I lost contact with, but met him a couple of years ago in the Tampa Bay CSC.

I have a friend who is still on the ‘Big List’….or son of the big list…..sometimes calls for me to return. Might do one day. With yet another Big Rumour.
