Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

I agree with your post in that we have seen a number of positive improvements in performance under the new regime, and I feel reasonably confident we can take care of Legia over 2 legs.

I also think the younger players will adjust more readily to the new urgency than the older heads – they still seem to ease off once ahead, ‘irking’ Ronny D.

Over the next few years we may well see a number of the younger players developing into the first team squad, but still feel that we may lose VVD and FF (at least) and the youngsters are not ready yet.

So we need to be ready to buy ‘hit the ground running’ replacements, despite, as I’ve already posted, not being confirmed in the Group stages of CL, if at all, until 4/5 days before end of transfer window.

Let’s hope for a good away performance in Poland and at least a goal to bring back to a packed Murrayfield.

Ernie, so why not just call us Glasgow Hibs then? Or sons of Donegal athletic?

Will You will be trotting out the verbatim minutes from 1887 and telling us brother walfrid was shipping arms to Dublin under his surplus.

In all seriousness with your doctor who time travelling knowledge of history, would you know anything of a protest rally in George square supporting the struggles in Ireland? 1920s apparently the police shock horror charged the peaceful protests. An unprecedented number of folk died later of brain haemorrhage.

So, let me get that right.

You only defend the SNP in the interests of fairness because you think the blog is unfair to the SNP only and there is no anti-Labour or anti-Tory or anti-LD bias that needs redress. Does that not sound like an SNP partisan who sees offence only given to his side and feels that everything directed at other parties is fair comment.

You rely on Campbell Martin for info and, he is an SNP stalwart I believe. Do you have friends and neighbours who are not SNP or Yes voters, in the interests of fairness?

As I said, there is no shame in it so why not own up. I know that there are some, a minority, on the Yes side, who are not SNP voters but the vast majority are. It just seems to buck the demographic trend that we cannot find many SNP voters on CQN. I know there is one, at least, and a fine lad he is too but don’t pretend I zip up the back and that every Yes voter on CQN has never voted SNP.

We agree on this, since participating and trying in the face of overwhelming odds is the epitome of the human spirit. I didn’t see his face but wish I had: I rely on the online BBC coverage for what it’s worth. Bob might just be my hero now. A friend shared with me a video of John Buchanan at the moment when he won the judo bronze, and his celebration afterwards. He did light up some lives with that, some of them thousands of miles away.

The medal table (or rather the focus on the very top of it ) and the constant referral to it almost on an hourly basis is what I have issue with. How many have looked at the top of the table and thought, “Come on Scotland, get a few more medals and knock England off the top.” or “Good, we’re number one.” That reaction is precisely what the media intend when they show the top. Bob will never be mentioned in this context, neither will Belize or around 20 or so other countries/territories. Seems it is more about reinforcing the pecking order than anything else.

The friendly games are fine as long as everyone knows their place and Bob knows where his is.

  9. have to pass on my feelings of great pride having spent the last 7 hours in the centre of Glasgow. I`m a Lanarkshire bhoy but defend Glasgow at every turn when the knockers come calling.

Having lived and worked in almost all of the big cities in the UK , I remain convinced that Glasgow is the top dog. The attitude and openness of the people being the big difference.

Today I saw a city in bloom, welcoming visitors and locals with positivity and open arms. the areas I covered were all central. Merchant City , George Sq and Buchanan St but the buzz was there across all age groups. I even had a swift drink in the Blane Valley which is mentioned on here often , felt a bit young in there TBH.

Anyway apart from the omnishambles that is Scotrail, a great day was had by all…..well done Glasgow.

  10. The problem with the narrative that we should just sell VVD and FF because we have ready made replacements in the youths is that it is a pig in a poke argument.

Posters can claim all the potential they want in young Marcus Fraser, Leo Fasan, Colin McCabe, Paul McMullan, Calvin Miller and Darnell Fisher. The point to note is that the potential has not yet been tested and proved. None of them have a sufficient history in performing at or near the top level in order to judge whether they are good enough to bridge the gap from Youth football to the senior game, or whether they are merely standing out in their age group but cannot cut it with senior players.

And when the assurance of their readiness comes from a poster who has previously championed Mark Millar (now at Falkirk), Stephen O’Donnnell (Thistle) and Adam Virgo (retired following spells at Yeovil and Bristol Rovers), then I think scepticism is justified.

Now I am in agreement with the strategy of buy low:sell high but it becomes harder to convince fellow Celts of the merits and necessity of this approach when posters make simplistic and provocative statements about the approach, who state that “you don’t need to know this stuff” and “don’t worry about it, we’ll handle it!”.

When we sell a £10m player we cannot buy a £10m replacement; that would be economic madness. So when we replace them with a 2 or 3 million pound player or a promising youngster, we are palpably replacing superior with inferior, because these replacements did not command a £10m transfer fee. Now some of them may turn out to be better than the guy they replaced but very few will be immediately better and, by the time they do improve to that level, it will be time to sell them but we will get to keep the guys who did not fetch transfer bids.

It is an inevitable burden under which we must operate. But don’t try to sell it as a virtue because we are quite blatantly trying to reach a market and a position where we will not be forced to adopt this lowly position in the food chain.

When we sell a good player and buy a less good player, we are downsizing. We have to do it and take our chances and our gambles but giving a Polyanna appraisal of the new guys is just dumb, dumb, dumb. Let them earn their praise through performance and proof, not through PR and salesman’s pitches about their potential.

  11. Justy opinion but cqn is different because it has one thread..”

    Two points about that.

Firstly, if it is the settled wish of CQNrs or, more importantly, Paul’s settled wish for it to be so,then that is how it will remain. I was expressing MY preference and it is one on which I have changed my opinion. Like you, I was originally in favour of the current format and did not want CQN to mimic all the other boards with their disconnected thread format. However that means, in the yes of many other Celtic Boards, we are tainted by what we tolerate and seem to condone.

Secondly, I don’t have any wish to suppress an alternative view. Alternative views will abound within threads as you say. It is a problem that has arisen from the very popularity of the blog. It has attracted Rangers fans who wanted to continue the BBC blog policy of exchanging insults between rival fans, it has attracted fans of the DR hotline who want to champion the DR view of Celtic to the extent that “not lazy journalism” no longer applies as an aspiration far less a fact, and it has attracted a bizarre EDL/BNP man or men who has the support of Kojo (if he is indeed not TSD himself) and a few others in order to continue his stereotyped, prejudiced and racist views. There are limits to my tolerance and while, I would prefer not to be associated with the first two, I am adamant that I will not give succour or respect to the last one(s).

    So what is your solution?

    I don’t do Facebook.

    Ignoring them has not worked.

David Moyes was appointed Man Utd manager on 9th May 2013.

    Here are his summer signings

1 July 2013 DF Uruguay Guillermo Varela. £undisclosed

Varela had 1 first team appearance in 3 years for former club Penarol. He had 0 appearances for Man Utd last season. Ergo he was a project.

2 September 2013 MF Belgium Marouane Fellaini £27.5m

2 September 2013 DF Switzerland Saidy Janko £undisclosed

Brendan Rodgers was announced as Liverpool manager on 30th May 2012

    Here are his summer signings

    Fabio Borini Roma £10,400,000 13 July 2012

    Joe Allen Swansea £15,000,000 10 August 2012

    Oussama Assaidi Heerenveen £2,400,000 17 August 2012

Nuri Sahin Real Madrid Loan 25 August 2012

Samed Yesil Bayer Leverkusen £1,000,000 30 August 2012

£30m spent and only one player(Allen) could be considered even close to being a success.

With 10 minutes of research, that’s 2 big clubs in the last few years, with 2 new managers with tens of millions to spend on established players, and both took their time in bringing players in. Why? Because it would have been irresponsible if not negligent to bring players in without assessing the squad and deciding what is required.

Now Ronny Deila, who you have referred to as a ‘puppet’ and a ‘failure’ as well as being ‘ashamed of him’ already, has openly said he wants to assess the squad and the youth team prospects before bringing players in. Sounds sensible to me. I’m sure he has a budget, however small that may be, but he’ll also know that Champions League qualification, as well as player sales will increase that budget.

If Forster says he wants to go, which considering he would probably treble his wages and increase his England prospects, then the hope of CL qualification isn’t going to concern him in the slightest. He has 2 years left on his deal, we can get maximum money this year, or take a reduced fee next year.

VVD is a different issue. He has 3 years left on his deal. We can play hardball with him and still get a big fee next summer. I wouldn’t be considering anything less than £15m, but I have no doubt whatsoever, if Southampton come in for him, he will be desperate to go. Again the hope of CL will not deter him from playing in England, for Ronald Koeman no less, and with a substantially increased wage packet.

These aren’t just the harsh realities of the SPL, the Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and indeed mid table clubs in England all have to let their players go when the big boys come knocking. We’re below most of them in the food chain.

So if Ronny wants to take his time and get it right, then I’m 100% behind him. If when the transfer window has closed, we have qualified for the CL, sold FF and VVD, and not spent significant money then maybe you might have a point.

  26. Clashcitybhoy on

    SFTB ,

I agree with your comments on our youth policy.

The whole thing IMHO is a waste of money, and we only need to look at the stats on game time to see it is less successful now than it was 10 years ago, and even less than 20 years ago.

Statistically, I think we would be just as likely to find a decent player if we scrapped everything up to u20s , and simply ran a squad of 17/18 players, and saved on everything else.

Most of the guys we see breaking through end up playing no more than 20/25 games before they are punted to an English 3rd tier team.

I have no idea what the source of the problem is :

    – do we sign the wrong youngsters

    – is it poor coaching

    – do players think they’ve made it too soon

    – do better players think they want get a chance

Or, is it all of the above and more?

Given that we have more resource than all the other clubs put together , and we only have a population of 5.5 m , something clearly isn’t right.

At no time in my original post – which I fully accept was extremely simplistic and even open to the charge of triviality – did I confine the terms of the point to CQN contributors.

The media is full of deliberate and wilful disingenuousity (if that’s the word) conflating criticism of the Israeli government as the same as anti-Semitism. I drew the connection that this deliberate and wilful disingenuousity is also evident in the attempts by the Scottish Unionist media to equate voting YES as a personal endorsement of Alex Salmond – in the full knowledge that Salmond has an image issue with many non-SNP voters. In short, playing the man, not the ball.

Is that the same Poland who, in a 400 page document, have been condemned by the European Court of Human Rights for running a CIA prison in a Northern forest near Stare Kiejkuty for years after 9/11? Poland, the ECHR ruling found, was complicit in torture, and in doing so violated the human rights of those imprisoned under operation Quartz. Those tortured of course were not fellow Christians, no they were in fact Muslims kindly transported by Americans, possibly even via the fair town of Prestwick) to a prison the Polish Government had denied existed for any number of years. There are those on here who rightly share a positive view of the country, but I cannot share a similar view of the government of that country. Poland has form here, from the 1930s, a fact conveniently forgotten by many, but not by me. If the Green brigade are looking for a new cause to highlight, then they, and their fellow travellers need look no further than the outrages the Polish government have participated in this case.
