Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

  3. Read an amazing stat the other day:

David Hay is the only Celtic manager to win a trophy after leaving the Hoops (League Cup with Livi 2004).

Unless of course you count John Barnes’ 2008 Caribbean Cup victory with Jamaica and Martin O’Neill’s invitational Peace Cup with Aston Villa in 2009.

    Good luck Neil!

Oh, you’ve opened a big huge can of nerdy stat worms there.

I could spend all day explaining the league situation but the high level notes are:

Queens are the oldest Scottish Club

In 1870 they became part of the Football Association of London

In 1887 the SFA (of which they were founders) banned Scottish clubs from competing in England.

Due to a lack of funds Queens decided only to take part in cup competitions in the late 19th century…

Virgil van Dijk was on the evening flight from Heathrow to Edinburgh yesterday sitting in front of me.

I wished him all the best with his Celtic career and he just barely managed a smile

Now maybe he thought I was bun maybe he thought I was the smsm which he must hate by now or maybe he thought I was too ugly for words

I know this week’s travel was a nightmare, but we need a big support for this game. The qualifiers are more important than the actual CL games. Club need to be proactive both in terms of encouraging large support and trying to ease travel arrangements.

If so,you would expect him to be a bit more cheery. Thinking of the money, after all that’s all players think of,innit?

Or maybe he doesn’t want to leave, knows he’s far from the finished article.

How many of us reckoned Liam Miller would be bettered served long-term by another year or two with us?

Most of us-and for once we were right!

    Same with Virgil.

Fraser not so much. I don’t want him to leave, but he has given us four great years. He owes us nothing, and though he will get better with us,he can expect to improve elsewhere too.

Virgil should stay for the good of his career.

  17. One of the saleable 2 will be sold by Peter Lawell to ensure his AGM balance sheet has good figures

If we don’t qualify for CL , the cash cow which lawell uses must come to an end

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS – I agree with you about VVD, I think he would be found out in England, he needs another couple of years up here to continue his development. His concentration is suspect at times but there’s a top class player in there, just needs time…

Hopefully his agent takes a long-term view of things.

In fact if I were him,I would be asking for an improved four year deal.

Still allows Virgil to leave in two years and frees him from contract negotiations during that time.

    Car travel to Murrayfield,

Take the M80/M876/M9 then the A90 towards Forth Road Bridge but then had to Edinburgh. It will take you just behind Haymarket where you can get a tram to Murrayfield.

There should be no delays on this route.

  26. Celtic won’t sign anyone till they know they are through this round. Got that from a pretty good source (though hardly earth-shattering insight – suspect we all knew it…)

If we don’t surpass Legia, then VVD or FF will definitely be sold.

That’s the way it is I’m afraid. Blame UEFA.

The route we have to go through to get to the CL does us no favours at all. Clubs with a fraction of our European experience are parachuted straight in or given one tie to negotiate. And when we get there clubs from the big countries are deliberately kept apart until the QFs.

The whole thing is rigged, it’s actually outrageous when you really look at it. It’ll take an absolute miracle for a club outwith the big 4 to win the CL again. I sense a gradual waning of enthusiasm for the tournament around Europe because everyone can sense it is a stitch up.

Real Madrid? Horrifically indebted club from a country whose economy is a basket case and where unemployment rates touch 40%. Yet they have just splurged £80million on Kroos and Rodriguez, to add to Bale and Ronaldo. Players earning in excess of six figures every week. C’mon! It’s a joke. It’s obscene.

I feel sorry for PL sometimes. Unless we strike it incredibly lucky with a couple of signings, or we have the new Mourinho as manager (fingers crossed!), we’ll always be group fodder and not much more…
