Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

Lasley epitomises everything that has been wrong with Scottish football for many seasons. It is ironic that a player who has been indulged by Scottish referees should be at the centre of this debacle.

  3. 1. We seek out and buy gems from under the radar and hope to build home-grown youth players plucked early.

    2. Part of our sell to said gems is that they will get the chance to promote their skills in the ECL and earn a bigger move (to them) to that big ugly, overpaid neighbour next door.

We align our investment with top training facilities, sports science, tip top scouting and a management team aimed at improving the gems to our benefit.

    3. We hope that this churn doesn’t become unbalanced to the point of starting afresh each season.

There are risks and the bang for the buck at scouting level isn’t good enough but it improving. McGuiness, Collins and Deila will see us create one of the fittest teams around.

Thanks for the support re TSD’s outburst but I have never written to Paul asking for anyone to be banned. Paul has shown his attitude to this poster and his supporters by his rulings on matters and it is his blog and his rules as far as I am concerned. I have never asked that anyone be banned. I have argued long and hard that the poisonous tone brought about by hun infiltrators a few years back who were taunting us about our club (in contrast to Edward Ursus’s polite presence) that the blog would react and quickly become just an exchange of insults. A similar effect is being created by TSD and chums. Whether it is the one sided posts that seek to generalise from Isis, Al Qaeda and Boko Haram to demonise all Islamists and all immigrants in turn, or the much less harmful wind-up postings of our correspondents from Daily Record Land, the same effect of generating heat rather than light would result and has resulted.

As I say, I never proposed banning. A couple of these posters are popular with others and merit their place in conversing with their friends as much as I do. I proposed and continue to propose that CQN move on to threads format so that these people can find their own home and area but I do not need to be associated (in the eyes of other Celtic sites) with an attitude that tolerates or condones this pish.

There are not two sides to this. There is no equivalent alternative voice promoting the virtues of Islamic fundamentalism, Communism or Left-wing terrorism. There are no voices suggesting the Yellow Man, Black Man or Brown Man is superior to the Caucasian. There are no voices defending ISIS atrocities.

Last night, TSD merely suggested that, in fighting the Red Army, his “Bosnian” Muslims were fighting SFTB’s friends, the Russians. The idea that I would defend the Russian position is a joke as my posts to Zbyszek and John O’Neil have shown. TSD and Jo’N have shown much greater support of Putin’s boys which gives you a good idea of where on the spectrum of democracy, Putin lies.

TSD’s post last night was full of the usual one-eyed nonsense about the complexities of WW2. In citing three divisions of SS helpers to the Nazi regime, he overlooks the much larger contribution of Croatian Catholics and clergy like Archbishop Stepinak and Friar Filipovic to the cause of the Ustasa. Bishop Saric of Sarajevo said :-

“there is a limit to love. The movement of liberation of the world from the Jews is a movement for the renewal of human dignity. Omniscient and omnipotent God stands behind this movement.”

If we are going to equate a Mufti’s support of the Nazis for Islamic backing of the Holocaust then we are free to make the same demonising generalisations about the RC church (and other Christian supporters of the Nazis) and pretend there was an indelible association with that regime. Of course, kitalba and others a few months ago pointed us in the way of the more complex picture of relations between the RC church and the German regime in WW2, so we should not be making that stupid generalisation any more. There were no bad or good churches; there were individuals everywhere, of all denominations, who stood for or against the right wing extremists. One of the few groups with a more continuous record of pro-Nazi support were the British Mosleyists and their offspring today, the EDL and BNP, the bed-fellows of TSD himself, who only recently disavowed Hitler because he was an election liability rather than being wrong and evil.

So thanks for the support, but I feel Paul is disinclined to banning.

I have been told that CQN Facebook is relatively free of the poisonous presences but I am not on Facebook so I cannot guarantee that this is a fact.

Anyway, I appreciate the support and the sentiments.

  15. squire danaher (and Richie) from earlier

I am afraid that I was, perhaps, offended by Squire D’s assertion too but, since Richie withdrew his objection, I should check I have understood the point intended.

I took it to read that you were saying that the same people who mistake an anti-Israeli or anti-Zionist post for anti-semitism also tend to equate support for Scottish Independence with support for the SNP.

If that was what, indeed, was intended then I am offended on 2 levels.

Firstly, because of the crass comparison with the warfare of the Middle East with a democratic settlement of the future relationships between the “nations” of Wales. England and Scotland.

But, secondly, because it is inaccurate. I read most of the blog (I know?) and I spotted only one poster who made that connection between anti-Israeli and anti-semitism. That was JO’N posting now as Captain Beefheart. Is he the poster you meant? Is he really guilty of getting heavily involved with the Independence debate to any great level? If so, I may have missed those posts.

However, I suspect that, in contrast, both ernie lynch and myself have been guilty of throwing out the SNP jibe on occasion but neither of us fits the bill in equating anti-Israeli sentiment with anti-semitism. So who were you thinking of if that is the allegation you did intend to make?

Apologies in advance, if I have your intentions wrong but that is how it read to me.

P.S. I throw SNP out as a jibe in retaliation for all those many posters equating No voting with supporting the Orange Order and Paisleyites. I don’t actually think that, in accusing anyone of being SNP, falsely or otherwise, I am being anywhere near as pejorative as the Yes voters have been. There is no shame in being an SNP supporter really but I am surprised at how many claim to be Independence men but not SNP voters and how few have the honesty to state that they are SNP men.

  22. Sorry to all those who think this blog is the place to perpetrate their very personal, individualistic and sometimes unpalatable opinions on world politics and religious belief on the rest of us, but I will always contend this is a FOOTBALL blog (as in C.Q.N).

So I will confine my posts to things Celtic and football, with the odd attempt at humour to lighten the moment.

World history is replete with evidence that religion and politics have caused untold misery and death perpetrated by those who think that ‘my religion / politics is better than yours’.

We all have opinions on these subjects but are gracious and considerate enough to confine them to appropriate forums. I find it clutters up a FOOTBALL blog and I shouldn’t have to ‘just scroll past’ skewed, petty and vindictive comments.

I think he sees KC as the real creative spark in the team with a goal threat, but I was surprised at Murrayfield when for the final substitution, he pushed KC forward to the striking role and introduced Liam Henderson in midfield instead of giving Tony Watt the last 10/15 minutes of a done game.

Ronny has stated he likes the ‘two wide men’ approach. Will be interesting to see what additions he makes to the squad as I fear than Derk and McGeough are not good/consistent enough and young McGregor is not up to CL pace yet.
