Season for points to be dropped in unlikely places

751

Yesterday’s result at Ibrox gave some welcome encouragement but it would be wrong to read too much into it.  Rangers still have the kind of lead that would have Celtic thoroughly confident of a league win and, lest we forget, St Johnstone collected all three points from Celtic Park already this season.

The win at Inverness was much more important.  The Highlanders are bottom of the league but that is a false position.  Two points separate Hibs, Dunfermline, Aberdeen and Inverness, while Kilmarnock, who shipped six goals to Inverness at home two weeks ago, are only a further two points away.  Even with 10 men Inverness remained well organised yesterday, don’t be surprised if they move ahead of the four teams above them in the weeks to come.

The league is remarkably tight from fourth place St Johnstone to bottom Inverness, where fewer points separate the teams than split Celtic and Rangers. Don’t, therefore, be surprised if points are dropped in the most unlikely places.

ET indeed, we have stopped discussing the standard of refereeing and now dwell on ‘the match commanders’ observations on what song material our support indulge in.

  3. Here’s a wee question to all of you who start to blubber and snotter like a wean whenever the words Ireland and Celtic are mentioned is the same sentence

A lot of you claim persecution because of your Irish Catholic heritage and have had to flee these shores to seek a better life me personally I call it economic migration

    Now the question

Why is it when I look around me particulary in West Central Scotland there are still thousands of good decent Irishmen many of who are now in their twighlight years and have made a right decent living from their time here and are now at liberty to return to ireland with their fortune at any time of their choosing. Why is it they choose to remain here whilst being the subject of persecution racially and secterian motivated assaults and are now no longer allowed to give tuneful voice to the heroic deeds of their fore bearers

Why do you think they choose to stay

  4. setting free the bears

Yes. Keeping an open mind is important.

However, other than watching every single Celtic/Rangers match this season and examining every foul, it is pointless to look at fouls/bookings ratios.

    Here’s a thing,

Like many on here, my family history stretches like a long sad rag through the famine, immigration to Sotland, generations down the pits, and the whole anti-Irish stench that sat around those years. My father and grandfathers generations sheltered themselves against this legacy through song, all the family get togethers were song-based – to the point where, as kids, you’d invent all sorts of techniques to avoid havin to sing.

I loved those nights though, ordinary folk singing the most beautiful songs with harmonies that seemed magical to a wee boys ears. The vast majority were Irish songs, tho the only reb ones would be ’98 songs in general, as even the ones from 16 – apart from the Foggy Dew – were deemed to be fairly poor songs.

There was often ‘mixed’ company – what a stupid phrase – at those nights, with miner pals of my Granda singin some Scottish favourites, but no-one takin offence to any song, appreciatin them for what they were – stories set to tunes.

Course there was the old problems with the ‘walks’ – but most of the Scottish people of non-Irish background were good honest folks. The people that had a problem with Taigs would, in another setting, be your anti-Black racist, or your anti-Arab zionist, or your anti-Jew nazi. Question is, how do they get like that and how do we stop it?

I don’t believe this country is overwhelmingly populated with anti-catholic, anti-irish, or anti-Celtic people. I don’t believe there is an organised conspiracy against ‘us’.

I do believe there is a ‘nut’ of people with a problem, and that these are aided – not in an organised way – by people in media and politics with a ‘mindset’, or who have been – effectively- bribed.

  13. mickbhoy–those oldn’s who prefer to stay–maybe they’ve paid their taxes and are entitled to stay? Maybe as a GIRFUY to those nice Orange marchers who encourage them by playing outside their churches? Or perhaps they are older Celtic players who were kicked so much by the Orcs and the rest of the Scottish “football” teams their lower limbs no longer function? You tell me.

I agree, but we have to be very clear what Celtic is and what it is not.

  15. up over goal

“…..it is pointless to look at fouls/bookings ratios.”

It is equally pointless to ignore them. They have a place within a wider context. Individual match stats may not demonstrate bias, corruption, or incompetence, but a pattern can emerge from studying a larger sample. The stats are not meaningless; it is just that their meaning is not yet clear.

‘I’m afraid you’ve got a lot more work to do if you want to convince anyone that Republicanism has anything to do with Celtic’s heritage, never mind being vital to it.’

    My aim was more modest.

It was to question your assertion that the name Celtic was chosen as a means of proclaiming the joint Scottish/Irish origins and aspirations of the club.

I focussed on that point because it shows the power of myth over fact.

There is no evidence for the myth.

No primary source. No quotations direct or indirect, merely supposition. Moreover supposition that conventiently fits the agenda of those making it.

Such evidence as there is (eg the meaning generally ascribed to the word Celtic at the time ie Irish) contradicts the myth. Wilson states the name had not been used previously. It had, for two clubs.

    It’s revisionism, pure and simple.

Nail on the head mi amigo.

From my experience it’s a very big “nut” and the people bribing them will go to any lenghts to keep control of said mindset,

I’m not sure you’ld hear the answer.

Your pre-amble suggests to me that, to borrow Jeanette Findlay’s comment, you have “no ear for the debate”

I deplore intolerance from the Scots towards the Irish just as much as I deplore intolerance from Irish fans, whether native or abroad, whether born there or generational, towards the Scots.

I think you just displayed some of the former. I can hear the dreaded phrase, Plastic paddies, hanging heavy on your thoughts whilst you whistle the tune of the Sloop John B with its new lyrics

I can’t answer that but I can give you my experience of others.

My brother left home for England in his late teens and returned home on a reasonably regular basis. As he settled, then married and integrated more, he virtually stopped coming home. He lives in a beautifull part of England, has a very nice house and a good job.

As he got older he started to get a bit nostalgic and began to look back with the rose tinted specs. He decided he wanted to come home for a few days and go see some old faces and visit some old places with a bit of personal history. I went around with him on a couple of days, but I could tell he had ditched the specs and the nostalgia was waining fast.

On his last day we were in the pub and he told me that after spending a few days back home that he realised that you can’t go back, because it’s never the same, everything has changed you’ve changed and your practically and outsider again. He also said that having looked aroung the place with a fresh eye, there were few endearing features. I won’t tell you his exact words as they may offend. :)

Also, when you move away it’s your chance to be reborn and ditch the baggage. If you return, the locals quickly repack it for you. :)

I had another wee tale to tell, but maybe another time as I’m off to bed now.

    All the best.

    Rico

Why didn´t he write something about this a week ago?

Keeping this in the papers is a form of “there´s no such thing as bad press”.

    Yes there is.

The GB are in it for a reason.

No bluenoses read or believe him anymore so he´s flogging a dead horse if he´s writing for them.

He doesn´t need to write it for us cos we know that the GB didn´t do anything wrong.

The sooner the add-ons and IRA crap stops the sooner we achive our goal.
