Season for points to be dropped in unlikely places

751

Yesterday’s result at Ibrox gave some welcome encouragement but it would be wrong to read too much into it.  Rangers still have the kind of lead that would have Celtic thoroughly confident of a league win and, lest we forget, St Johnstone collected all three points from Celtic Park already this season.

The win at Inverness was much more important.  The Highlanders are bottom of the league but that is a false position.  Two points separate Hibs, Dunfermline, Aberdeen and Inverness, while Kilmarnock, who shipped six goals to Inverness at home two weeks ago, are only a further two points away.  Even with 10 men Inverness remained well organised yesterday, don’t be surprised if they move ahead of the four teams above them in the weeks to come.

The league is remarkably tight from fourth place St Johnstone to bottom Inverness, where fewer points separate the teams than split Celtic and Rangers. Don’t, therefore, be surprised if points are dropped in the most unlikely places.

this is all a legacy of a divide and rule policy which pitted the the 17th Century equivalent of you, me, and wee billy against each other – so the Lairds could hoard their siller, whore their principles, and see their perfumed, hankerchief-laced power increase… still, thats all in the past eh

“Just a quick word on the Rangers fouls per booking stat from yesterday. It’s a bit of a weird premise to base anything on. A team can make 15 fouls in a game and if none of them are serious it’s possible none of the players are booked (providing they’re evenly spread around the team). Conversely, if 4 serious fouls are committed, it can lead to 4 yellows.

Let’s keep it sane, people. ”

I think I was the first poster to point out those stats and I take a wee bit umbrage at your final sentence.

Firstly, I drew no such conclusions. I merely presented the anomaly.

Secondly, I am well capable of drawing the same thoughts as yourself that those 6 tackles by St. J might have been serious enough for 50% of them to result in bookings, whilst the 16 Rangers fouls might have been mild infringement such as to justify a booking ratio of just over 10%.

These are possibilities to be entertained and on which to keep an open mind.

As is the possibility that the ref was biased or corrupt or intimidated. There is no lack of sanity involved in keeping an open mind to the other possibilities.

I’m not going to take any lessons on sanity from someone who thinks Zaluska is a better keeper than Forster :-)

I spent a few hours this afternoon looking at vids on you tube about the Fammine and the Irish fight against the brits, after reading some of the garbage that gets spouted on here at times I had to go and re educate myself.

It’s the age old trick, tell a lie often enough and it becomes FACT, they like facts them lot, anyways watching said vids has reinforced my belief that appeasment is not the answer.

The Irish will always be second class citizens in the brit eyes, and Celtic are a symbol of Irishness, the hate is getting worse by the day, I hope and pray the good folks of scotland open their eyes sooner rather than later to the hate that is being metted out, there are many, many good people in scotland of all faiths, it’s so sad that the bigots are in control.

  12. Ulysses Mcghee

I see you were tilting at windmills earlier in trying to get Kojo to display logical consistency between Statement A and Statement B.

His usual defence is “I didn’t mean what I said and I didn’t say what I meant”

He has a reluctance to spell out his prejudices in a neat and logical form, preferring to provide a smokescreen of fog and verbiage so that its meaning can be as manifold as possible.

As far as I can work out from his reply, he seems to be stating that he is happy to share a football stadium and support of his club with a disparate group of people from different cultures. But he would not like them to actually live in his country unless they thought like him.

Best I can do as far as interpretation goes. I failed Kojoese at school because I kept laughing when it was meant to be serious.

I have got the Campbell and Woods book, and if you read the prologue (page 12-13), you’ll see they consider the impetus for Celtic’s founding had been building for a few years before Hibs’ victory in the 1887 Scottish Cup. Brother’s Walfrid and Dorotheus had been involved in football teams before 1887.

Why would the mission statement on the official website not be admissable evidence? It is entirely consistent with Celtic historiography for at least the past 30-odd years. Secondary evidence, as any historian will tell you, should not be dismissed simply because it is secondary evidence.

The circular is in Wilson’s A Century With Honour, page 4. Took me quite a while to type it out, actually. I’ve quoted it because here we have primary evidence, from the founders of the club, making absolutely no reference to political aims. It is also heavily Catholic, and quoting it proves my point that Catholicism is absolutely intrinsic to Celtic Football Club. Not, “much more so than Republicanism,” because Republicanism was a supreme irrelevance to Celtic’s founding. Simply put, without the Catholic Church there would be no Celtic FC, and singing hymns would be much more in keeping with the club’s origin than singing rebel songs.

You are purposely mixing up nationalism and Republicanism when you quote Conway, and in any case, one speech at one dinner, does not a football club make. There is no evidence whatsoever that Celtic had any political aims at all from their inception. It is quite ironic that you accuse Wilson and McNee of supposition, but are perfectly happy to indulge in it yourself to further your own agenda.

Also, being, “not a nice chap,” does not in any way undermine McNee’s work. Nor does being a, “nice chap,” support or undermine Wilson’s.

I’m afraid you’ve got a lot more work to do if you want to convince anyone that Republicanism has anything to do with Celtic’s heritage, never mind being vital to it.

If you had read it, you would have read clearly that I was saying that an open mind should be kept for the adverse possibilities (bias, corruption, intimidation) as well as the innocent one you offered, dismissing others as lacking in sanity.

I have not seen the game yet, hence the open mind.
