Shameless liar to Fit & Proper

171

Rangers director Dave King’s remarkable statement today read like a manifesto for taking over a football club.  I’ll leave aside most of his allegations, speculation and threats for now and discuss the central point to be considered by the Scottish Football Association.

King has asked the SFA if he would be deemed a Fit and Proper Person to run a football business.  He has been a director of Rangers for the last 12 years, starting pretty much in tandem with the Employee Benefit Trust scheme which has precipitated so much trouble for the club.  One of the key responsibilities of a non-executive director, defined by Wikipedia, are to:

“Satisfy themselves that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible”

It was his responsibility to ensure that Rangers’ tax submissions were accurate and defensible.  He was employed (and presumably paid) to carry out this duty on behalf of the thousands of ordinary shareholders.  This particular duty has been subject to gross underperformance.  Being a bad director is not a suitable defence.

Last year the Daily Record reported that a South African court judgement said: “In our assessment [King] is a glib and shameless liar”.

Adding he, “has no respect for the truth and does not hesitate to lie … if he thinks it will be to his advantage”, before ruling his company was liable for a £250m bill served by the South African tax authorities.  The very mention of the phrase “tax authorities” should send alarm bells ringing at Hampden.

Even Craig Whyte has never been called a shameless liar by a court.

King served as Rangers director with SFA president and board member, Campbell Ogilvie, for five years.  The SFA have yet to respond to his Fit and Proper Person enquiry.
You are beginning to see why the SFA president’s position is simply untenable.  We have been plunged headlong into the biggest scandal in the history of Scottish football and he sat around the table with most of the people involved when many decisions were agreed.

SFA chief exec, Stewart Regan, might be tempted to issue another “Campbell is clearly conflicted with this…” comment but would be much better served by:

Making it clear that works like “glib and shameless liar” from a court do not make you Fit and Proper for Scottish football.

Calling an emergency board meeting and instigate an immediate and wide-ranging inquiry into Rangers – with an initial response before the end of this month.

Advising the president that he should immediately offer information to the SPL inquiry and do the same with the SFA inquiry once convened, and step aside until all related matters have concluded.

More on King’s self-serving claim that trophies Rangers ‘won’ during and around their EBT period are secure soon.

I would like to be the first to congratulate St Mirren on their League Cup win in 2010.

I think that was just a story. Poppy Scotland came out with a denial.

  6. Former CelticTV presenter and now UEFA media officer Alex O’Henley has just tweeted:

Dave King’s assertion that #RangersFC titles won’t be stripped might turn out to be a tad presumptuous. Developing story.

What does he know that we don’t? Interesting.

  7. Did anyone notice Rod Petrie’s schadenfreude smirk last night when he spoke of Rankers playing with a depleted squad for the remainder of the season?

  8. How would rangers manage a CVA when they are losing £1Million a month?

They don’t have even have 1p to cover the first £1 of the debt!

Or am I being too simple about all this…

    No. Seemingly not.

We have enough to throw at them anyway.

    And more in the future.

  10. Yo all,

Not been in for yonks. In fact not exactly been part of compis mentis society for even longer although as I emailed Rioskorrie earlier my planned re-emergence for the cup final took a jolt when pals dragged me out last week for the Aberdeen game. The first couple of pints seemed ok. The next eight were feckin brilliant. Sunday proved even better and I am now in full relapse staring at patterns in ceiling tiles which alternate between pictures of the grim reaper, Craig Whyte, David Murray and the lassie with the big washing buckets who lives down the stairs from me and can be heard at four o’clock in the morning wringing mop out the window, while letting Glasgow’s warming March tropical breeze give her a blow dry. So in an appropriately named ‘nut-shell’, I am not quite fully recovered I think :-)

Anyway what’s wae all this persil whiie artwork? Most of all where is the ‘sausage maker’? I mean ‘link creator’.

    Enough,

To be honest I have little interest in the ad infinitum pre-mortem dissection of Rangers, Mind you I do enjoy a good laugh at their expense. Rioskorrie fortunately cheered me up no end with the following. (Some of the language isn’t for weans -although they’ve probably heard worse from the priest ).

Poppy Scotland responded to queries on twitter saying that Poppyscotland coordinated the collection @ Ibrox on 5/11 so Rangers had no involvement other than giving us permission to collect and also confirmed that all money from sale of Poppy shirts from JJB was received in line with agreement from Rangers.

    Minus 6 each on aggregate?

Aye, but what happens when it goes to penalties?

  13. That debate last night on state of Scottish football:

All this grief and wailing over Rankers is pathetic. Rankers are largely responsible for the state of Scottish football. Not just for cheating, the introduction of foreigners via Souness & Cardigan etc but more to do with their attitude to the game. It is an attitude that encapsulates the Hun mentality that “second is nothing” and “winning is everything” no matter how you do it…their fans screaming with joy when one of heir players rips his studs down the back of a guys achilles heel…it is this type of mesolithic thinking we need to escape from if we are ever to evolve onto another footballing level. We need to get back to skill, finesse, the individual charisma of creative players, vision, technique…in order to do that we need decent coaches who don’t just want to win for their own egos and who don’t want to turn all the kids into carbon copies of each other…

You could talk about this stuff all day and night but the thing is that if Rankers are finished we wont be under the constant pressure of having to win every single game…we can relax…give youth a chance etc…

I am trying to be objective but I can only see Rankers demise as a good thing for Scottish football as a whole…

  14. hi paul . dont you feel we should be taking this rangers ( ia ) scenario out of this country now . All these administration delays are for only one reason to aid rangers f.c . I feel it is now time to let the rest of the uk know what is actually going on up here . Like many others i watched the stage managed show last night with mclean and scotlands no 1 brown nose traynor . A programme again designed to make a case for rangers fc . The severity of the crime is not being reported here in this country , all that matters is rangers survive , and rangers get back into the spl unpunished , and that rangers dont lose their alleged tainted titles . It is unbelievable that an outfit with so many alleged accusations pending have so many well wishers. Paul we have on this site ,and indeed other celtic sites , some very clever guys who know about the implications of alleged tax avoidance, about the alleged use of EBT,s . and guys who can convey the unfolding story very very well indeed our own JAMES FORREST being the one who springs to mind , why dont we involve the english broadsheet media , who dont give a hoot about scotlands establishment club , but may just be interested that a football club may not be paying their tax and could get off scot free or without too much hardship .. Would it be wrong of me to ask why we the celtic support are sitting here giving all the time in the world to the friends of rangers to look for solutions and excuses to aid them, because in my mind that is what is happening from the administrators to the media to scottish footballs HQ . We are not going to see justice being done up here . Will we ever hear the full and honest outcome from the BIG enquiry . Will judgement be without fear or favour , cant see it myself . But in our midst we have guys who can carry the true account of whats been going on up here over the years to the ears of the rest of the UK and beyond . We have fan bases all over the world . There are newspapers out there not governed by the laptop loyal . I dont know about the rest of you but i am scunnered letting the friends of the gers control the agenda .
