Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

Away and geeze peace ya boring repetitive idiot.

Have you ever seen Labour Councillors leading the Orange walk?

Where I grew up there were plenty and idiots like you vote for them.

  2. the exiled tim

From previous blog. Thanks for that. Not a good situation at all re health coverage from Jan 2021.

And cannot blame the Brits over there, don’t think they got a vote in 2016.

  3. Delighted with the signing of SD. Must confess, didn’t think we’d get him.

Just the kind of presence we need. Straight from the MON playbook.

Still questions around your over arching strategy. Too many signings are too late. Too many signings are immediately loaned out or benched at best.

However, full credit on this one.

    Exciting

  4. Glad to see Duffy signed. I hope the refs dont start a campaign against him as a physical strong player.

Now 28 players and 5 out on loan in first team squad with 18 and 1 loanee in the reserves.

This is enough. We do need a Left Back to replace Boli as he looks unlikely to play.

I think we could look at getting further players out as they dont contribute

Bolingoli, Ralston, Soro, Henderson, Connell, Griffiths are unlikely to figure in the team.

Rogic and Johnston seems to be rarely fit and we are as well getting rid.

If the rumours are to be believed Ajer N’ tcham, Christie (and Dembele) reportedly want to leave and we should sell them next summer.

  5. E-Tims = bundle of laughs this morning.

If BR wants CMcG then no issue from me.

More so if it kept KA or OE at the club for another year.

Also could we not support GT as he grows into our team.

He is still young with a lot of the game still to learn.

If we cannot develop him into a useful player then our set up / coaching are the issues not his ability.

When he came off after 74 minutes in a recent game he looked as if he had served for 74 days at Khe San.

He looked that shattered he had the 1000 yard stare — more emotionally drained than physically tired.

One big failure this season has been the poor passing between some of the players where the ball is fired at shins rather than passed with any precision.

  6. Good afternoon from an office block in Springburn, wet, grey and cold. :(

Welcome aboard Shane, get McCarthy and Paddy Roberts on board as well.

only my opinion, if Roberts isnt playing 1st team football and has 2 years left on his contract, offer 2 or 3 million and get him fit, it will push Jamsie and wee Frimpors to keep up a good level.

    Hail Hail

    D :)

  7. and another thing…if we get 10,12 or 15 million for Ntcham and same for Ajer i will run them to the airport myself. :)

good footballers but cash is king.

Roberts is 23 a good age for a sell on value if we get him at the right price.

    D :)

  9. Police Malicious Prosecution in Scotland.

One definition of malicious prosecution is:

“A person who had been prosecuted without sufficient evidence and maliciously had a right to damages. The court ruled that an action could also be brought under human rights legislation. Malicious prosecution cases are complex and difficult to prove.”

So, 3 key points here, at least two of which set a high bar to prove:

    1 “without sufficient evidence”

    2 “maliciously”

3 “cases are complex and difficult to prove”

Yet, within the past week, there have been 2 admissions by Police Scotland that parties involved in the administration and liquidation of Rangers were maliciously prosecuted.

Case 1 David Whitehouse and Paul Clark of Duff and Phelps

Both were arrested following events surrounding Rangers’ financial position in 2012. They allege the Crown Office and Police Scotland subjected them to wrongful detention, arrest and prosecution. They are seeking a total of £14m in damages.

Crown lawyers admitted much of the prosecution against them was “malicious” and conducted without “probable cause”.

Judge Lord Tyre ordered interim payments of £350,000 to David Whitehouse and £250,000 to Paul Clark.

    Case 2 Charles Green

He was charged with “alleged fraudulent acquisition” of the club in 2012. The charges were classified as serious organised crime.

Prosecution was later withdrawn. He is claiming £20m in damages.

He will now receive a public apology and damages based on confirmed losses to date plus a compensatory sum for damages.

Comments re both cases by lawyers indicate that the admissions by the Lord Advocate are unprecedented which emphasises how unusual and serious these cases are.

If the claims are paid in full the bill will be £34m to the Scottish taxpayer on top of internal police/legal costs

So, why did these individuals end up under arrest? Why did the police embark on raising charges without sufficient evidence to support them?

Was the fact that it was Rangers which was the object of the financial dealings which attracted so much interest by the police? Has similar charges been made maliciously against administrators of other businesses? If not, what is special about Rangers compared to any other business?

These are serious issues involving a lot of public money and, at the heart of it, a suspicion (at least on my part) that the police in Scotland effectively “lost their marbles” when investigating the initial allegations and acted maliciously as they could not accept what was happening to Rangers and wanted scapegoats.

The Scottish Government must call for an independent public enquiry into this case and into the reasons why a police force acted this way.

  10. Shane Duffy could have stayed in England, for a lot more money, this Bhoy wants to play for Celtic, well done to Brighton, showing a bit of loyalty to him, they could have dug their heels in and sold him elsewhere, but the Chief exec said it was because SD was a top professional and a great guy around the place, welcome big guy.

  11. Heard last week that Leicester City have made a net profit/surplus of £225 million over the last five seasons. Helps if there are clubs out there prepared to pay £80 mill for your English centre back.

  12. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

Duffy is a fantastic signing, tough uncompromising style will complement Julienn and Ajer.

Also would be happy with a project signing as backup – one major caveat though – project signings for the first team squad need to be of a certain level of ability already ie. not Jack Hendry, who had neither the current or potential ability. These players need to be able to step in when injuries occur if they are occupying first team squad space…then they need to be of first team quality now, even if one day we think they have a lot more potential to fulfill.

I understand they are hard to find/attract etc. But if you can’t find them I’d go with a tried and trusted pro as backup rather than a punt on someone miles from the required class from Dundee (sorry Jack).

  16. Maybe the Police charged the wrong people with wrongdoing and brought the wrong charges against the wrong people, still cant understand why a tax bill the wee tax case which was in existence and owed under Murray and subsequently White has resulted in nobody being charged with this, that is before the huge tax case for EBT’s.

I remeber in the past that a businessman who withheld 500k in PAYE from HMRC got 5 years, the figures above are much more yet no charges.

Plod you can understand. They’re a shower of DOBs.

It’s the Crown Office that’s the real concern.

Something stinks but I doubt the Scottish government will be in too much of a hurry to find out exactly what has gone on here.

  19. Thank goodness the BBC proms are getting Land of Hope and Glory and Brittania Rules the Waves back on the bill.

Away to look out my Union Jack Umbrella hat.

  20. Well done Celtic, Chris Jullien in partnership with Shane Duffy has potential and signing the Irishman is a serious declaration of intent.

Good players aren’t always available for us, we are not the first choice and we are on the lowers levels of fantasy money with the better players always hoping for the silly money paid in the EPL.

Great left backs are almost as rare as poo from a rocking horse, and Celtic struggle to find them. Plug the gap, but don’t expect them to turn into £25M Kieran Tierney.

    Keep the chequebook out CSC

    ______

That approach only works if Ajer and Edouard sign an extension. Selling McGregor to fund the wage increase.

Even then it’s unlikely Ajer signs.

Otherwise, it’d be selling a key player with a long-term deal when you have 4 key players on the back 9 of their contracts.

We should be keeping McGregor to help bridge the transitional period post-Edouard, Ajer & Ntcham.

Still have hope Christie signs a new deal.

  27. I could be wrang but isn’t East Dunbartonshire part of the Greater Glasgow area?

Or is there a better class of voter out Lennoxtown way?

  28. Duffy? Great signing – allows us to play 3 at the back with two wing backs and 5 midfielders in Europe – an attacking 3-7-0, better than the 4-6-0 last week. (I’m only joking btw)
