Shane Duffy and space for a project

712

At 6’ 4” and built like the Free Derry Wall in the town he knows so well, Shane Duffy brings experience and assurance to the middle of the Celtic defence.  What would have happened had he been at the club eight days earlier is imponderable.

I don’t know Shane well enough to comment on that question but I am assured by Irish friends he has been an impenetrable leader in their national team for years.  He is at Celtic because his time as first choice at Brighton is over, but he is still only 28, which is the middle of the peak years for many central defenders. We have recruited a player who will be influential in the chase for 10.

The most pleasing aspect of his signature is the tactical shift another central defender gives us towards three at the back.  Surely Shane, Kristoffer and Christopher will all play when fit?  That being the case, I would like to see us add one more central def.: space for ‘a project’.

Can’t El Hamed also play as part of a back 3. And even Nir Bitton. 5 central defenders suggests we wouldn’t desperately need another?

    ……………………………

I think the problem with your suggestion, Jobo, is that only two of the 5 are actually central defenders. Shane and Chris Jullien. Nir, Kris Ajer are converted midfielders and Hatem is a right back. I like my players to have the natural instincts for the position they play in. I don’t think those three have, similar to Ryan Christie playing as a striker. I think we need to buy round pegs for round holes and stop trying to convert players into something that they are not.

    That’s not correct.

People in extended families can still visit each other.

I can see why a few folk are confused though as a lot of the press didn’t highlight that bit.

  3. Crazy situation in Clydebank today. I am forbidden from visiting family and friends in their homes, and they are forbidden from visiting me in my home, but we can all meet up in a Clydebank pub, cafè, restaurant or leisure centre for a swim and gym workout. Is this Sturgeon’s way to boost the local economy?

He doesn’t score many goals, but a lot of those those he does get are from headers.

So maybe he will provide a threat from corners.

Assuming of course that someone learns how to take a corner.

  6. TOSB,

Big Kris is a CH fella. A pretty good one whose runs from that position we will miss and who now has eyes over him. He and Julien are the 2 first picks. Only going to 3 at the back (now we’ve acquired Duffy) seems to be the answer to accomodate 3 of them unless injury rules one out.

Don’t overplay them and have Bitton in there against lesser teams and El Hamed can play there. In fact you and I can play in there at times given the setups of some of the teams we play :)

OE / KA — fair point about the contract extension angle.

However They are the quality players we need to move to the next level.

CMcG has been a bit of a sleeper — slow start but has improved season on season.

However he is not of the standard we need to move forward.

He should be a squad player not a first team starter.

Does not do enough to deserve it.

Our MF is our big weakness at the moment.

SB is three years past his place in the team — being the captain and his past record gets him some flex but not till this season. There was a reason BR talked up the job in Aus — he wanted to ease him out without causing any rancor.

RC is a great prospect but he has a bit to go and is not as good as he or his father think’s he is.

He is worth the effort to get him to the next level — no more his little hope / skip / jump after something doesn’t quite come off. If he wants to go the EPL then let him go even though he is moving two years too early.

Pushing ON and TR out the door tells the world that we cannot build / develop talented players — we sort out the water carriers first and try and then hang on a bit of talent on the side.

We have a JMcG sized hole in our MF at the moment.

As well as a pair of VW sized boots that have never been filled.

And then we have the story of EK — significant money for one good game an a road traffic accident when BR threw him under a bus at Tynecastle.

Rinse and partly repeat with IS — again significant money some would say very big money for a player from the Israeli league who is currently picking splinters out of his erse. Not good …

Hopefully things are different for DT — we desperately need a spark in the MF and he shown a lot of promise so far in the last 24 months.

And then we have the JMcCy rumours doing the rounds.

If that wasn’t enough we have NB to add to the mix plus a whole cohort in the youths / reserves that have been talked up a great deal by some on here but who have not had much first team game time.

The sum and substance of all this is that change is needed and hopefully change is coming in the next four weeks.

    Extended households, not extended families.

‘If you are an adult and you live alone, or if all the others in your household are under 18, you, any children who live with you, and the members of one other household (of any size) can agree to form an ‘extended household’…………… ‘

The ‘rules’ are as clear as mud.

For a start they’re not actually rules, more sort of precatory objectives.

  11. Delighted with the Shane Duffy signing, a player who will play for the jersey.

Tommy Burns said that it would be difficult to find someone who would play for the jersey but hope they would play for the love of the game.

I think we have him, this old guy is a happy TIM.

    PS is he any good.😍

  12. MadMitch

Disagree fella. Callum is a terrific player and along with Eddie, they are 2 of our most important players.

Agree on Scott (past it) and Ryan (like but not developing and now being coached into Kris Commons 2011 shooting from anywhere).

This season could see us over the line with talent trumping systems. We have the former in abundance but we desparately need the latter improved.

I could be wrang but isn’t East Dunbartonshire part of the Greater Glasgow area?

Or is there a better class of voter out Lennoxtown way?

Stop stirring the poo! We’re obviously a much more responsible class of citizen than wot you are. Leave us in peace to continue with our freedom to pursue our interests in a responsible East Dunbartonshire manner.

Sturgeon has got it right with this.

If you meet up in a public space behaviours can be monitored by others and tuts tutted if you get to close / comfy.

If you meet up in the house then it is a free fire zone for all sorts of nonsense and the virus starts spreading.

The extended family angle seems to be a bit of a grey area — the message has not been very clear.

  17. JF @ 1.50

Sturgeon — aka Not-Jacinda — has been very poor at leadership during this pandemic.

She talks a lot but does very little and seems to have little understanding / engagement with the performance of the SG — are Care Homes being regularly tested / the lack of follow up regarding returning holiday makers / the lack of testing — are three examples where she has either taken her eye off the ball or she didn’t know the ball was in play.

Being slightly better that the fat / useless / lazy / waste of space that is BoJo is not good enough.

I respectfully disagree, I don’t think she/she/thon is a false flag, my money is on an alt right troll. Why don’t we ask him, I’m sure he’ll tell us the truth :-)

  19. Ajeti, Moi, Turnbull and Duffy is a good window

If we can keep Edouard and can get in a left back, we are looking stronger than last season despite likely losing Ntcham / Ajer

  20. Big Wavy

I’m undecided about Ajer. There is a great player in there, somewhere, trying to get out. He has loads of positives: pace, the ability to bring the ball out from the back while simultaneously breaking the press of the opposition and throwing them into chaos. However, he can’t head a ball, hates being challenged in the air one-on-one. He also places both hands on opponents inside the box when he is trying to shepherd them and prevent them from turning. I think this is an accident waiting to happen.

  21. BW @ 2.06

Have to disagree about CMcG — limited player who is not worth a starting position in the team.

It has been great to see him develop over time with all the hard work he has put in.

However he is an attacking MF who scores 1 in 4 and doesn’t do enough in the other games to justify his starting. He needs to work on the defensive side of the game — currently he couldn’t keep weans out a close — and he needs to stop disappearing in games when the going gets touch.

He has a tough gig at the moment playing with SB who always wants the ball so he slows down the play and who is also rapidly running out of legs so he has to cover for two people at times.

SB / CMcG / AN Other = weak MF.

ON could fit in but seems a bit unfocused at times.

RC has had some good games before he bought the BBB shooting boots.

  25. Encouraged that so many refer to Shane as a natural ‘leader’ at club and international level.

IMO that’s one of the reasons Broony is seen as indispensable; who else can really rally the troops mid-game??

    Calum? Jamesy? Ryan?

Shane may even allow Neil to ‘pace’ SB’s involvement as the season unfolds – hope so for his and team’s sake.

As for who we’ll sell? First offer with a plus-20 for any midfielder (including KA) we should willingly accept

The last thing we want is a bloated mob of malcontents in green&white (thats the job of CGN posters innit!!)
