Shrinking the squad, and an update

454

I’d hopes Dedryck Boyata would bask in the reflective glory of being part of a fancied Belgium squad at the forthcoming Euros. It would enhance is reputation and perceived value, but alas, his injury has ruled him out, and will likely mean he’ll miss Champions League qualifiers, so he’s on the payroll and in the stand for at least a portion of next season.

News that Colin Kazim-Richards will travel to Brazil to discuss a move there will help Brendan Rodger’s attempts to bring the squad size down to a more reasonable level, as Carlton Cole’s pay-as-you-play arrangement will formally become a don’t-pay-as-you’re-not-playing further clears the decks. This leaves only, Leigh Griffiths and returning strikers Anthony Stokes and Stefan Scepovic, who will, at most, be a bit-part players.

Getting it right with the next striker to sign is important after so many misfires.

We’re finally seeing some movement on Res 12 issues. The advert will first appear in the principle business newspaper in Nyon, where Uefa have their headquarters. Will update you as and when. We’re going to run the UK ad after the Swiss story, so nothing here tomorrow.

Oh, and there was no legal action or threats thereof last night. We had a tactical rethink and pulled a related article, nothing more.

I am sure it is, from our perspective – others will look to circumvent.

With the SMSM refusing to engage, for whatever reason, this undermines our case – it’s infuriating but true.

If Celtic FC were leading this campaign – how would UEFA/FIFA look upon a club intent on ‘bringing down’ their own association?

I hope that the Resolutioners are ultimately successful, but I don’t ignore surrounding issues outwith their control.

    Winning Captains,

Can you ask Paul67 if the Plc have written to UEFA yet to support our request for an inquiry ?

Keep in mind here, I’m asking if they have supported our request, is the main point of this request.

As you know the Plc always speak to Paul first with regards to Res12.

Leeds, Dearie Me, they sure are a basket case, back in the mid 2000s I worked with a young fella who had come back to Dublin from england, he was an apprentice at Leeds for a while, played a few times for the third ish team, anyways, he was on a decent wage about a grand a week which was a fortune for a young fella, a few of the kids decided that they would tell Ridsdale that they were worth much more than they were getting, they trooped in one by one and all, about eight of them IIRC, they all came out with a 200% rise, up to 3K a week, they couldn’t believe it, they weren’t expecting anything, I reckon it was part of his downfall.

He was a decent wee player, ended up in the Irish league for a time.

    Robbie Shepard was his name.

i was on rangers media, follow following thier season book renewal thread.

they were joyous at 25,000 sales till now. with a hope of getting to 40,000+, and maybe even beating the record sales of 43,000.

we were upset that we only sold 43,000 for last season.

allegedly renewals are up there allready, with the public sale starting tomorrow.

The Exiled Tim, the English Jim White , not that dumplin on sky sevco news, once told the story of wages Leeds paid to Seth Johnson from Derby.

When Johnson signed for Leeds he was paid £30 grand plus per week when his agent was looking for about £15 grand a week.

If Stubbsy goes to Rotherham, wiil he have to egg on the mighty K Broadfoot who plays with them?

Where are the Republic playing this evening ?

  21. From Guardian article about Seth Johnson…

The story of Johnson’s contract negotiations with Leeds have passed into legend, a chilling damnation of Ridsdale’s spendthrift regime. It goes as follows: Johnson had been earning £5,000 a week at Derby and his agent told him he wouldn’t settle for less than £13,000 a week at Leeds. Ridsdale’s opening gambit, however, surprised them both. “Right, I’m sorry, I can only offer you £30,000 a week,” he said. Around the table jaws dropped in genuine shock. “Oh, all right then,” said Ridsdale, filling the silence, “£37,000.”

The story is untrue. Ridsdale says it is “a myth”, that he had seen Johnson’s contract at Derby and his actual offer was “two grand more than what [he was] getting” there. Johnson’s agent, Leon Angel, said: “We went into that meeting with a figure in mind for what we wanted. We negotiated and I can tell you we didn’t get everything we wanted. In other words, it was a perfectly normal negotiation.”

I still believe the myth :)

  25. Hi Gordon,

Obviously I’ve got all the games details from The Wiki. I’m looking for things like when various draws were made for each competition home and Europe. Details of our opponents including the strip they wore during the games home and away. Also just the various decisions made by the club during season 66/67 as well as various supporters actions which are noteworthy. A chronology of events would be ideal, not necessarily on-line by the way, books would be good. I suppose also if any of our older contributors on here can add anything, that would be good.

I don’t ask for much, eh? Haha

    Baldrick,

Firstly, Teuchter ar la’s suggestion about Jim Craig’s site is certainly worth considering. Jim is recalling the events of 50 years ago and he offers an intriguing insight from behind the scenes in his capacity as a Celtic player at that special time . I have enjoyed his recollections.

As far as other details of that season are concerned, being one of the as you say “older contributors” I was fortunate that season to have been at every domestic game and the final in Lisbon. I have lots of archive material from that time and could probably answer many of the questions you have.

That said, there are many books which cover the period in whole or in part and the following are certainly worth a read :-

A Lion Looks Back – Jim Craig

The Lisbon Lions – Andy Dougan

The Glory and the Dream – Tom Campbell and Pat Woods

And You’ll Never Walk Alone – Gerry McNee

Jock Stein the Celtic Years – Tom Campbell and David Potter

Some personal recollections about season 1966/67…

The season started with great promise when we demolished Manchester United 4-1 in a friendly at Celtic Park.

In the Glasgow Cup at Ibrox on a balmy August evening we thrashed Rangers (IL) (1872-2012) 4-0 with Bobby Lennox scoring a hat trick. The Beatles hit “We all live in a Yellow Submarine” was in the charts at the time and both sets of supporters had their own take on it. Our vessel was Green theirs was not blue but Orange (says it all). Next days headline was “Rangers Torpedoed”

In the league our 5-4 win at Dunfermline is one of the greatest games I ever witnessed. We were 0-2 , 1-3, 2-4 down and came back to win with a last minute Joe McBride penalty.

In our 7-3 league win over Stirling Albion at Celtic Park we were 7-1 up after 48 minutes, then lost 2 goals and the team were jeered by some of the crowd at full time!

We played with the beloved old hooped socks for the last time v St Johnstone at Celtic Park in a 6-1 win.

We had to travel to Aberdeen on Christmas Eve (drew 1-1) and Tannadice on New Years Eve (lost 2-3)

At Stirling Albion (away) Billy McNeill had a last minute headed goal mysteriously disallowed in a 1-1 draw. We had lost at that venue (Annfield) the year before.

Dundee united beat us for the second time in the league, this time at Celtic Park and again 2-3.

We won the league at Ibrox in May with a 2-2 draw in weather more suited to winter. it poured down. NB Paul 67 was born on this very day!

We breezed through the League Cup and scored 5 goals in 20 odd minutes against Dunfermline in the quarter finals.

We edged the League Cup final 1-0 v Rangers (IL) 1872 – 2012 when they were probably the better team on the day.

In the Scottish Cup first round, we disposed of Arbroath at home (4-0) but events at Berwick took centre stage as the wee Rangers beat their Glasgow namesakes 1-0 to much joy on the terracing at Celtic Park.

Queens Park visited in the quarter finals (Sean Connery too) and we lost a goal from the kick off but won 5-3 in the end.

As seems always to have been the case with Hampden semi finals, we played poorly and drew 0-0 with Clyde but comfortably won the reply 2-0.

Aberdeen were brushed aside in the final just 3 days after our 0-0 draw with Dukla Prague.

In Europe, we had a very tough battle (literally) with Zurich at Celtic Park and won 2-0, Tommy Gemmell’s goal was a screamer. They payed in red shirts and blue shorts (you did ask).

Nantes (in a natty all yellow outfit) were outclassed in round 2. Wee Jimmy was christened “the flying flea” by a French journalist.

I seem to recall we had adopted the “we’ll be running round Lisbon with the cup” dittty around the turn of the year.

In the quarter finals Vojvodina Novi Sad (the Yugoslav champions – white shirts with a red sash) were unknown to most to be honest but they had beaten that Atletico Madrid mob (sorry but I still have no time for them!) in the previous round in a play off game. They were good and but for Billy’s last second winner at Celtic Park we would have been heading for a play-off in Rotterdam. We played in our all green kit that night.

Dukla Prague (red shirts with yellow sleeves and yellow shorts) were much better known and had eliminated Ajax earlier in the cup. Willie Wallace was the star with two goals.

The second leg was a nail-biting affair but we made it and we were all of to Lisbon.

In the final, Internazionale (blue and black stripes black shorts)… you know the rest!

The Dundee United and Vojvodina first leg defeats apart, the one other loss in that wonderful season was to Dinamo Zagreb (0-1) at Celtic Park in a friendly in March. Jock adopted a very strange formation with players playing out of position and we made lots of chances but lost a last minute goal.

I think he may have been trying to fool Zagreb’s fellow countrymen (Vojvodina) ahead of the quarter final. Always a step ahead was Jock.

One last point, Joe McBride was a brilliant Celtic centre forward and had scored 35 goals by the time he was injured in that Christmas Eve game at Pittodrie. Joe’s misfortune was probably Stevie Chalmers good fortune.

At the end of the day 1966/67 was without doubt Celtic’s greatest season and safe to say I think never to be repeated.

  26. The commentator just said that Shef Wed didn’t use their option to keep Aiden, something no right if he canny get into a championship side.

He does look a tad overweight tho, much bigger that the Aiden I recall.
