Silk from financial sow’s ear

1048

World Soccer Magazine published a fascinating table at the bottom of an article on the respective financial might of Chelsea and Manchester City yesterday, detailing player spend and sales for current English Premier League clubs over the last 10 seasons.

Liverpool have an average net spend of £18.1m as they chase former glories while Manchester United, who stole Liverpool’s place at the top of the English pile, had only a marginally higher net spend of £18.6m.

Fifth on the list is Aston Villa, largely on the back of an attempt to take over the world during Martin O’Neill’s reign, spending a net average of £11.1m.

Most fascinating of all is that 11 of the 20 have a net average spend of less than £4m per season.  They spend big, but apart from the odd team spending some foreign country’s mineral wealth, they also sell big.

Bottom of the table of net biggest spenders in Everton, who sold £7.8m of talent more than they bought during the period.  Newcastle United are also in a surplus, thanks in part to their recently departed director of football, Joe Kinnear, who completed his service without spending a penny.

Crystal Palace clearly have an eye for a bargain.  They successfully negotiated a return to the Premier League, and then bought Joe Ledley as his Celtic contract ran down, with an average net spend of £722k.

The Silk from a Sow’s Ear prize has to go to Arsenal.  The last decade has not been generous to Arsenal, however, their average net spend is only £1.5m per season having sold £277m worth of talent.  Their business model is not right, i.e. they have not been able to compete with those who don’t seem to care if they break even, but they, more than any other club in Europe*, are primed for the Financial Fair Play era.

*apart from Celtic, of course.

    Curry… hmmm,

I could eat a clatty clout in a good sauce.

If you haven’t tried Callos – Spanish – tripe with chickpeas, jeez it’s paradise. And I don’t like tripe, which is where the clatty clout comes in

I thought the non-virgin olive oil – i.e. the later pressings – was ok to cook with as it had a higher boiling point?

  4. West o Ireland. Once again. That others don’t want independence doesn’t make me disagree as ammeter of course. Huns and other people who don’t want independence have different reasons for our conclusions.

You might like salt n vinegar crisps and some people in the OO might like salt n viniger crisps. Should I demand you should give up salt n viniger crips for fear you are colluding with the Hun?

I can’t see any significant shift in Catholic teaching – nor should there be, morals don’t change with time imo.

What I can see is less preaching and more understanding, see Pope Francis’ recent comments about not judging homosexuals for instance.

Micktt – because it’s a vote winner in marginal constituencies for now… The most talented politicians in Scotland are SNP…, they are populists from a tiny gene pool bigoted by nature.., don’t trust them.

Modern Britain is actually quite cosmopolitan and democratic

“You may well be right… But my view is their principal motives are negative – anti us rather than pro anything”

It’s not that I am particularly pro-independence or anti-independence. I don’t live in Scotland anymore, but it is my observation from having lived there and from when I go back.

Most of the sectarian bigots tend to be draped in Union flags and buy into that ideology.

They are definitely not pro-independence. They love their Queen, and that love comes from the situation regarding the position of Catholics in the Monarchy. No other reason.

The heat extracted oil is fine to cook with, the real virgin oil, isn’t.

BTW, real virgin oil is cloudy, with lots of sediment, but you would know that anyways, they have to refine it to make it palatable to the

    ” consumer ”

You miss the point again. Parliaments make the laws where they govern. It has nothing to do with democracy: Henry’s parliament wasn’t democratic – nor did its declaration that he was head of the church make him so.

I didn’t mention the Church’s views on marriage & I don’t know why you’ve dragged them into the discussion.

“An independent Scotland will retain the monarchy.”

    I’m sure it will.

The discussion was more about the people who are openly anti-Catholic. And their love of the Union flag, the British military and the Royal family.

  15. I, equally, cannot believe the number of posters who cannot get it.

If it was just as simple as saying, I am for removing the yolk of British rule from Ireland or S. Africa, therefore I must be for Scottish Independence.

No matter how many times you are told that our situation here has nothing to do with oppression and invasion, you still claim to not get it.

I am not sure that is the best line to advance if you want to convince us that you are ready to govern those of us who feel differently.

When our fathers and forefathers came here or to England or Wales, they did not en masse join the SNP or Plaid Cymru or the Cornish Independence movement. Why would men who had so recently won their own independence not naturally ally with a native Independence movement?

But they did not. They recognised that they had more in common with a working man in Cardiff, Newcastle, Birmingham or Truro than they did with a Tory from Banff.

I understand the motives and reasoning of (mostly) younger Celtic men who have reconciled themselves to Scottish Independence as an aim and I do not consider them enemies or traitors. But I do have a strong sense that these emotions are not reciprocated towards me by the McGlashans in their movement.

“you are not about to compere the treatment of african Americans with the Irish Catholics in Scotland are you? ”

Not at all. The point was that a Constitution did not help protect people from abuse. I was directly countering your original proposition. It is not the law but the quality of men who administer it that will determine our safety.

Frank Mulholland is not as bad as Judge Roger Taney but he is still not an admirable man nor worthy of administering the law in a mature state or country.
