World Soccer Magazine published a fascinating table at the bottom of an article on the respective financial might of Chelsea and Manchester City yesterday, detailing player spend and sales for current English Premier League clubs over the last 10 seasons.
Liverpool have an average net spend of £18.1m as they chase former glories while Manchester United, who stole Liverpool’s place at the top of the English pile, had only a marginally higher net spend of £18.6m.
Fifth on the list is Aston Villa, largely on the back of an attempt to take over the world during Martin O’Neill’s reign, spending a net average of £11.1m.
Most fascinating of all is that 11 of the 20 have a net average spend of less than £4m per season. They spend big, but apart from the odd team spending some foreign country’s mineral wealth, they also sell big.
Bottom of the table of net biggest spenders in Everton, who sold £7.8m of talent more than they bought during the period. Newcastle United are also in a surplus, thanks in part to their recently departed director of football, Joe Kinnear, who completed his service without spending a penny.
Crystal Palace clearly have an eye for a bargain. They successfully negotiated a return to the Premier League, and then bought Joe Ledley as his Celtic contract ran down, with an average net spend of £722k.
The Silk from a Sow’s Ear prize has to go to Arsenal. The last decade has not been generous to Arsenal, however, their average net spend is only £1.5m per season having sold £277m worth of talent. Their business model is not right, i.e. they have not been able to compete with those who don’t seem to care if they break even, but they, more than any other club in Europe*, are primed for the Financial Fair Play era.
*apart from Celtic, of course.

Champions League teams from the nations you refer to DO NOT get more co-efficient points for winning a game than teams from diddy nations
They get bigger points from their national coefficient which is based on the combined efforts of the country’s teams and national team
What IS wrong is that teams get the same coefficient for winning a game in the Europa League as the CL
Eg celtic would have done better coming 3rd in CL section last year and wining a couple of ties in last 32/16 of the EL than a bonus point for qualifying out the CL group

As yet I’ve still to do my research on the YES/NO vote so would very much be considered ‘undecided’.
What I struggle to comprehend though is how independent will Scotland be with Mrs Mountbatten still the head of state, interest rates set by the Bank of England and a the existing currency remaining intact.
Isn’t this simply devolution under another name?!
I don’t have the time or the tools to do this but it would be interesting to see what the bottom dozen or so clubs’ net spend is as a % of their turnover.
Sound like it would be pretty small.
An equivalent net spend but us might , I’d guess , stand comparison , even allowing for the last few years bigger sales of the likes of Aiden and Victor Wanyama.

That’s pretty much the point I was making,that the No campaign have become complacent.
It is a genuine worry. As is that the agenda seems to have shifted away from an economic one,which is where I think they are strongest.
Take yesterday’s announcement about binning the bedroom tax,for example. Brilliant piece of work,blindsided the opposition,and who in their right mind would argue that it should be retained?
My concern is that a raft of proposals are being made-most like the above correctly-but little attention is being focused on our ability to pay for them while still managing to do the basics.
And with such a highly benefit-dependent population-and I know who I blame for that!-costing should be a priority.

I agree, a huge leap, but it was one of illustration rather than similarity. Fact is that trade is a global phenomenon, and requires a global approach, otherwise firms will continue to find ways to return more cash to shareholders. Chances of a global solution? Nil.

Mark Carney’s speech the other day confirmed that the plan to keep sterling would only take place on UK govt’s terms. So no fiscal independence, no deficit spending on mad welfare projects, no undercutting UK firms on corporation tax.
No brave new Scotia in other words.
And of course, membership of the EU will require us to join the Euro anyway (and Baroso and others have confirmed we will be treated as new members). Even if the Spanish and all the rest agree to let us in, it will, once again be on their terms. Which means the Euro.
Therefore our fiscal and monetary policies will be set not in Edinburgh, or London, but in Berlin…
I see ICAS this morning have cast severe doubt on the ability to maintain pensions at current level. Combined with uncertainty over currency, I’d say you’d either have to be very poor, with nothing to lose, or very rich to risk a Yes vote.

My view on your question is:
One small step for a Scotsman will lead to a giant leap for our kind.
Presbyterian Scotland will struggle to disassociate itself from Queenie and her walloper on the squidlydid. So rather than go for the full boona up front take as much as you can and over time when the sheckles drop in the wallets and purses of the minnions the need for the mucky face and the commonwealth will diminish. It also benefis Scotland in the short term to be backed up by a relatively stable pound in it’s first few years of it’s greater adventure. But our day will come when I will put a cross beside that box that says REPUBLIC of Scotland he say YES or still for paying for tha bawbag loyalists he say Nae.

You raise some interesting points. One’s which others are probably more informed about so I’ll leave it them to go into detail on these issues. For me though it makes sense for us to use the Pound, at first, untill we decide whether we are going to stay in Europe or go it alone as the Nordic country’s have done. If we do vote for Indy, who’s to say the ecomomists wont decide that we should create a Scot’s Pound? Let’s get rid of the control from London first then have the debates on the nitty gritty issues.
If Indy becomes a reality then there will be major changes to the political makeup of this country, I think initially SNP would remain in power for a while as the labour movement in Scotland is so fractured. It could take a few years for the left to properly organise and challenge the SNP. For the sake of my grandkids futures it’s a price I’m willing to pay.
If we keep Lizzies as head of state, it will be ceromonial role and no powers. Again at some later date we can debate the issue and decide what is best for us, the Aussies still have her as their head of state and there is no issue.
