Sinclair leaves a Celtic great

324

Celtic were invincible domestically in season 2016-17.  Players like Tierney, Dembele, Roberts and Rogic lit up the league, but Scott Sinclair was unequivocally Player of the Year.  His impact on the team was immediate, scoring 20 minutes after coming on at Tynecastle on his debut and turning up on all the big occasions.

His partnership with Tierney on the left forced opponents to become preoccupied with stopping Celtic down that wing, which allowed others freedom elsewhere.

One moment in particular stood out.  Celtic were 65 games into their unbeaten domestic run when they faced Motherwell at Fir Park in November 2017.  The same teams met three days earlier in the League Cup Final, which was settled when Scott won a penalty, converted by Moussa Dembele, which saw Cedric Kipre ordered off.

At Fir Park, the Motherwell fans jeered Scott every time he touched the ball, blaming him for making the most of the contact from Kipre.  It must have been a torrid experience for the player.  An own goal by Mikeal Lustig gave the home team a lead on 78 minutes but Celtic won a penalty with two minutes remaining.

When many players hide under that kind of scrutiny, Scott grabbed the ball, scored the penalty and extended our unbeaten run.  It was a great moment in our treble treble years.  He was a player who never hid.

The decision to take up the option to extend his contract by a year in May looked obvious.  He was a known resource at a time when the team faced a number of changes.  I have no idea why Neil Lennon left him out so much this season.  Mikey Johnston and Mohamed Elyounoussi are at the top of their game, but have been out injured simultaneously.  Still, Scott was only used for a meaningless Europa League fixture.

He leaves for Preston a Celtic great.

  1. OK Thanks B. Think at this stage that it is best Sincy has moved on and I would also welcome Morgan move if it happens, plus Hendry to Hearts.

However would also welcome a few in, It looks like Soro a defensive mid is close , but priority is a proven Striker, oh and yes a centre half as well please.

Celtic should just about manage with Shved and Sinclair against the SPFL teams.

What are you basing that on? What have you seen of Shved that makes you think he’s good enough?

  3. Am I right in saying so far all we have signed a 15-year-old winger called Bruno?

So glad we had our top targets lined up in time to get them on the plane to Dubai.

Next weekend we are back home and in action, no? Ach well, maybe tomorrow will a Carlsberg Friday, anyone remember those?

  4. Yeah Celtic40Me what have you seen that makes you think that he is useless

the mystery player named Marion Shved?

Picking ones favourites all the time has a lot to answer for

An important Managerial skill is “Bredth of Awareness” &

utilizing ones assets accordingly or if one does not apply

this necessary skills then one could fall into the trap of regret

& costing of ones Job in the end so it makes sense to use

what is @ ones disposal not ignore it that does not make sense

one has to be fully aware when ones botty is on the hot seat

& box clever or its curtains on the horizon nipped in the bud

end of so to speak so being a Manager requires more than

  5. Not surprising to hear that the Preston North End support are over the moon with the signing of Scott Sinclair. Scott is a class act and he certainly owes Celtic nothing after his honour laden stint with the Hoops. With sixty goals in his treble treble seasons with Celtic he is right up there with the clubs best strikers – incredible for a midfielder. A great player to watch we were lucky to have probably in his peak years but I’m certain he will do well at Preston and wish him the very best of luck.

  6. Like the look of Ismail Soro but he’s a DM.

Anybody see Lenny unpicking the Broonie / McGregor axis for him?

I don’t. And what the heck happened to Kouassi?

  7. The transfer rumour says that a new Israeli midfielder is joining training cam in Dubai and Celtic jhas always done well with Israeli players. I’m starting to fret a little about the possible outcome of a team without Scott Brown as he approaches mid thirties he can’t go on forever. A massive gap to be filled there. i wonder will we get this Slovak goalador or is he heading for Sporting Lisbon.

  8. I hope whoeveris brought in is fit and ready to play and the team is not deprived of them until late February, or in the case of Comperr and Boerigter never ready to play.

  9. Big Wavy Kouassi was a Lee Congigton nightmare signing all the little appearences

I seen him play for example pre Season Friendlies & one or two sub appearences

& his ineffective performance against the Farts @ Swinecastle meant he became

a three million pounds down the swanny signing useless & waste of the Jersey

I’m afraid its Taxi for Kouassi when we can finally get him off our books if people

on here think Jack Hendry is pants well Kouassi is even worse

  10. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 9TH JANUARY 2020 5:08 PM

Pierre Van Hooijdonk signed 25 years ago today

Before Big Pierre scored that header to win that cup Celtic had been playing football for 107 years.

In that time we had brought home 73 domestic trophies. And of course the trophy that is now the envy of the footballing world. But that’s a different story.

In the 25 years since he scored we have taken 35 trophies.

The case could be made that Pierre’s signing was a turning point in our history. Perhaps more fair to say he was the mere fulcrum. The ‘big enough’ lever resting on that small point is Tommy Burns.

Tommy got us playing like Celtic again; McCann knew it when he paid to bring him back to Celtic Park and then forgot. But the foundation had been put in place. From strength to strength since. Both as a team and a company, as the place to invest our pride and place to plant our feet and stand up.

Single transfer windows and individual balance sheets play their part but its the long lever reaching into the future with its steadying hand in the past tempered with tradition that has seen us to this present.

Indeed there is only one Pierre but

God Bless Tommy Burns, the Good Ship Celtica and all who sail on her.

  11. I do hope we have signed a good player here Ismail Soro

He is of African origin & is a midfielder he has already

signed & the price is 2.1 Million & according to the Net

he (Ismail Soro) is one of the players Lenny has been

looking @ I hope there are more to follow said Ismail Soro

comes from Isreal & Near Beaton & Elhamed knows

21 year old . Apparently a Wanyama type . Not sure how first team ready he would be . Of course he could turn out to be a Kouassi rather than a Wanyama.

Pierre’s cup winning header v Airdrie certainly felt like a turning point at the time.

Considering that we have won games in the SPFL this year with Lewis Morgan starting as striker, I think we would be ok swapping out JF for Shved for a home game. We started with Morgan on the wing too; If Morgan who is being sold to Inter Miami merited a start then Shved deserves his turn. He has a better CV and scored a great goal within 5 mins of being on the park in CL qualifying.

  15. ABKW1888

Nonsense about Kouassi. He was tremendous against Zenit when we beat them 1-0 at Celtic Park. He, along with the whole team, died against the diets and he subsequently had a long term injury.

Doesn’t look like he’s settled but deserved a chance to help stiffen the midfield. Looks similar to Soro.

  16. TOBAGO STREET

    Good shout

    Indeed, watershed Celtic signings.

All these trophies and those signed players, in such a relatively short period in our history

To think we read on here, about our ‘failed transfer policy’ and our ‘bean counters’

    Hail Hail

  17. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE on 9TH JANUARY 2020 6:25 PM

So we’re picking players based on their CVs now are we?

Weren’t you telling us about the necessity of signing another winger before we knew SS and LM were off?

He even missed a chance just before he scored so he is a Direct type of player not

What’s your take on the Sinclair scenario then… Wise one!

  20. Nah Wavy I would like to be proven wrong as regards to Kouassi however that is

not the case he was signed in Brendan Rodgers first Season which was Season

2016/2017 So he has been @ the Club now for Four Years cause he came in on

the Summer of 2016 I don’t believe he has been injured nearlly all the time he

has been here you are talking about a player that even failed to impress playing

for the Development Squad cause I’ve seen his name in the past mentioned a

few times playing for the Development Squad nah I think it will be eventually

    Taxi for Young Mr Kouassi

I agree with everything you have said today and most eloquently argued.

And more importantly, so does my wife.

  22. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

TalkNonsense website are advising that, according to reports on MSM rag online, an agent has hinted that speculation is not necessarily unfounded that his client, “WhatsHisName-NeverHeardOfHim” will be joining Celtic soon.

He is a mix of Scott Brown, Victor Wanyama, God, Mick the Miller, Hercules and Messi.

    Have watched him on I-am-a-Tube.

    Looks the real deal.

    Transfer window. Dontchaluvit !!!

    Hail hail

    p.s Kouassi wasn’t a Congerton signing…he arrived before.

So you say it was Ronnie Delia who signed him.

Nah it was deffinitely under BR Management
