Some background on Ronny Deila

1408

Some perspective first.  Ronny Deila, manager of Norwegian champions Stromsgodset, is not about to be appointed Celtic manager.  He does, meet the criteria, unlike the various one-season wonders cast aside from the English Premier League.  I believe there are two other strong candidates, Ronny has no pre-eminence at this stage, but unlike the various ‘favourites’ who have appeared in recent times, at least he is a genuine possibility.

Stefan Johansen worked under Ronny immediately before joining Celtic, which gave club scouts an insight into the coach’s style of play.  Stromsgodset are predominantly an attacking team, who press high up the field and pass quickly.

His players are dedicated athletes or they don’t remain his players for very long.  He is also one of the game’s intellectuals, a former teacher – and what I’ve been asking for since Neil resigned – a student of the game.  His attitude to his own role is one of continual professional development.

Ronny has a track record of improving players and improving teams.  He is not a brand name, nor a shareholder’s whim.  He is not being considered because he’s ‘pals with Peter and out of a job’.

Please bear in mind………..

Ronny Deila is only one of three genuine contenders Celtic are considering at the moment but all three match the same criteria.  They are intelligent, technically adept, progressive, winners.  Which has made me more excited than any of the names suggested so far.

  1. As I keep saying, I have no inside knowledge and no contacts at CP. Like everyone else I just look at the same picture and see what I see. So far, the depiction by lionroars which suggest DD went rogue in looking at Roy Keane as a candidate, seems to fit the bill best. The reasons why DD went rogue may be speculated about endlessly and pet theories expounded on the back of it, but, unless you know DD personally, you will be unlikely to get solid information any time soon.

Does it indicate that we are going to see more spending?

Does it indicate that DD was unhappy with the performance of our management?

Was he unhappy with NFL and JM, or PL, or all of them?

Was he just instigating a shake up of perceived complacency before reverting to strategy and appointing a coach with a modest record?

I can only answer mibbees aye or mibbees naw to the above but, as soon as we see the calibre of the appointment made, the feverish speculation will resume as to what this indicates.

If you are positive in outlook, you may see signs that Celtic will benefit from changes that allow us to explore competitive options outside the restrictions of the SPFL. If you are negative, you will see it as signs of turmoil and panic. And both outlooks have some evidence to support them.

When I see the salary figures that managers receive, such as those quoted by Zbyszek this morning, I wonder how we compete in that market. Most of the guys attracting those salaries have just had a couple of good seasons and were often failures in their previous posts. If we matched these salaries would our fortunes improve or would we be foolish to splash cash and pretend we are a richer and bigger club than we are. Are the good managers even worth the increased money?

AVB was a success with Porto but bombed at Chelsea and Spurs. He still got a top post with Zenit.

Pochettino was sacked at Espanyol but someone saw enough in him to give him a gig at Southampton, sacking a popular manager to make room for him, and now he gets a promotion to Spurs.

Paul 67’s favourite, Solbakken, worked with Copenhagen and didn’t at Wolves.

Tony Pulis was deeply unpopular at Stoke but is a hero to Palace fans.

Terry Butcher was successful with ICT but disliked by many fans there but was headhunted by Hibs.

John Hughes was sacked by Hibs and Hartlepool but still got a gig with ICT and did reasonably well there.

Numerous bosses have been flavour of the month but ended up as sacked perceived failures.

Jock Stein and Brian Clough were giants in the game but both “failed” at Leeds.

It really is hard to escape the notion that managers are fairly interchangeable and the “Myth of the Manager” can be overstated. Outwith Jose Mourinho, it is hard to think of many modern managers without one or two significant failures on their record.

Maybe it is the structure of the club and continuity of practice that is more important than the manager who is basically the well paid sacrificial lamb who acts as a lightning rod to attract ire and criticism, preventing this from being directed elsewhere.

  2. Not been on here for a few days. I welcome the appointment if it happens but have many worries. Is Norwegian football that good right now? Is it any better than the SPFL? Will the players respect him or could some of the bigger names demand moves if they are worked too hard? Answers on a postcard to P. Lawell c/o Celtic Park, State Aid Way, Glasgow G40 3RE

    Re teachers.

One of the most inspirational men I’ve ever known was a Mr Quigley, teacher of art at my high school. His passion for his subject was amazinh and helped instill in me a lifelong love of art and art history. I’ll always be grateful for that.

The folk on here taking cheap shots at teachers need to take a look at themselves. Says more about them than their intended targets.

The quality of the football is determined by the quality of the player, obviously.

However, if the basic tactics and style are correct, then it can be improved on with better players, which, I presume, we have.

If, as you say, some of our “bigger” players want to move on, due to being worked too hard, I say, Good Bye, Adios, Sayonara and thanks for the memories.

I would love a coach to introduce afternoon training sessions.

Lack of stamina was one of our Euro failings last year, due mainly, I suppose, to all the chasing, trying to regain sloppy possession and bad passing.

    Much work to be done.

The reason I am hopeful is that I see the opportunity for joined up thinking between Kennedy, Mc.Guinness and a coach with Deila’s football ethos.

    I live in that hope.

Didn’t life expectancy rise during the depression, supposedly because of the enforced calorie restriction?

I reckon the problem today might be the wrong sort of poverty. Poor but still able to access excess calories. So all the downside with none of the upside.

    It’s not all bad though.

I skimmed through that programme on Dalmarnock and the Commonwealth games. I may have misheard but I thought Mrs Jaconelli said that what with all the stress of having her home compulsorily purchased and everything she had lost 12 stone. If so, the answer to the problem is obvious. Evict everyone and knock down their houses.

You gave me a hilarious mental/mentol picture with your questions about DD ‘going rogue’ and approaching RK for the gig.

Had visions of such huge gorilla cavorting about the board room at CP ripping up chairs, flinging over phones and monitors and trashing the magners mini bar.

PL reaches for his rifle, loads a tranquilliser dart…..pop…..waits a couple minutes for it to take effect before pressing the green button on his gold intercom and uttering the words, ‘get Norway on the phone please….’

Must be true. A taxi driver telt me!

If your version of my story is correct, I’d expect to see Fay Wray appointed as manager when the sedative dart wears off.

And PL will be wary of the Warren Zevon lyric:-

” wish the ape a lot of success

    I’m sorry my apartment’s a mess

Most of all I’m sorry if I made you blue

  13. According to reports coming out, Deila plays an attacking stylish brand of football, using youths and allowing stars to shine briefly and raising profiles before cashing in (Like Lennon) He is happy to work with signings given to him rather than requested (unlike Lennon).

Maybe that is the most prudent thing to do.

It actually sounds perfectly sensible for another Glasgow team I can think of.

If it works out, and I hope and pray that it does then we could be a domestic joy to watch.

My only concern is that youth doesn’t appear to flourish in cynical European arenas. So short term we might miss out on European runs. Long term this might prove to be a good thing if a core of boys come through but will the support be patient enough?

A more cynical view could be that we are going to protect what we have, as cheaply as possible while Sevco flaff about.

Personally I feel quite optimistic about this one.He has no baggage for a start, and he is a teacher so TD……. GIRUY

Read with interest your bit about your jobs prior to teaching.

My personal experience, of long, long ago, is that the most approachable teachers were the ones who had come into teaching later.

They were the Tech Subject men.

I suppose you have heard the other unkind comment re teachers being :-

    Men amongst boys,

    Boys amongst men.

I see some speculation about John Collins.

Can anyone remember if Scott Brown was a part of the player revolt against Collins when he was Hibs manager?

Absolutely not. Broonie still has no idea what ‘revolt’ means.

I didn’t have anything against RK, I was looking forward to the show!

Biton was a direct replacement for Wanyama in the sense that Wanyama came from nowhere with no expectations but we could all see potential as soon as he got a run of games. I think Biton will be a stand out this next season and a rock to build the team on.

The players I listed were those that came with few of us knowing anything about them but imo are quality players (I’d put izzy in there too, forgiving his wilderness season after injury) boerrigter, juarez, ljungberg and to an extent murphy are the opposite of the players I listed, guys with an established profile playing at a high(ish for murphy) level.

What I never did get my head round in the seasons before last was bringing in loans that knocked our potentials down the pecking order (then didn’t play them either), we seemed to drop that last season here’s hoping it stays dropped. Did miku deserve the time he got in front of watt for example?

Whoever comes in I want fast free football when it’s on and savvy tactics when we’re up against it. No much to ask but maybe not easy to find. I don’t know much about any managers outside the top few uk leagues and some of the CL team’s leaders so I’ll leave it to someone putting in the graft to find out

In my opinion, only two guys are overpaid at our club.

Peter Lawwell, for running a middling sized company.

And Bo Derek Rigter for not running.

Peter Lawwell is overpaid based on the criterion of PLC turnover? Compared to what all other companies in the UK? Or to other football PLCs with similar turnover?
