Some background on Ronny Deila

1408

Some perspective first.  Ronny Deila, manager of Norwegian champions Stromsgodset, is not about to be appointed Celtic manager.  He does, meet the criteria, unlike the various one-season wonders cast aside from the English Premier League.  I believe there are two other strong candidates, Ronny has no pre-eminence at this stage, but unlike the various ‘favourites’ who have appeared in recent times, at least he is a genuine possibility.

Stefan Johansen worked under Ronny immediately before joining Celtic, which gave club scouts an insight into the coach’s style of play.  Stromsgodset are predominantly an attacking team, who press high up the field and pass quickly.

His players are dedicated athletes or they don’t remain his players for very long.  He is also one of the game’s intellectuals, a former teacher – and what I’ve been asking for since Neil resigned – a student of the game.  His attitude to his own role is one of continual professional development.

Ronny has a track record of improving players and improving teams.  He is not a brand name, nor a shareholder’s whim.  He is not being considered because he’s ‘pals with Peter and out of a job’.

Please bear in mind………..

Ronny Deila is only one of three genuine contenders Celtic are considering at the moment but all three match the same criteria.  They are intelligent, technically adept, progressive, winners.  Which has made me more excited than any of the names suggested so far.

    Natknow

What is interesting about the RK scenario is how a fan base that 8 yrs ago would have torn yer arm off for such a signing basically rejected him for not fitting into the Celtic strategy.

I blame Paul Brennan with all this Moneyball and Soccernomics talk. Some folk say Paul is PL’s mouthpiece.

The obviously never saw The Usual suspect or heard of the master of deception Keyser Zose.

    We’re watching you Brennan. ;)

Seriously I think DD thought it worth a box office punt and it was all about testing the water. Interesting how it panned out.

    ———————————————————————-

Well, I’m not so sure the fans would have welcomed Roy as a manager 8 years ago. As others have pointed out, even when we signed him as a player there were more than a few dissenting voices (’twas ever thus with the Celtic support!). However, you may be more in tune with the Celtic zeitgeist than me. Wim The Tim was someone most wouldn’t have seen coming but we accepted him. I actually think that most of the objections to RK are based on a perception of him as a person (rightly or wrongly) than his managerial record etc. At least, that’s how it feels at times.

I do think you’re right about the DD faction wanting to take a punt on what they consider a “box office” managerial signing. I’m still scratching my head at that notion. I just don’t get it. Similarly for Henrik. Great player of course, but what kind of football would we play with him as manager?

    (From previous ‘commonwealth city’ chat)

I live in a very different environment now on the outskirts of Aberdeen. The contrast between my own childhood and that of my 2 sons is stark. Great for my sons but an absolute source of shame on Scottish society. Watching commonwealth city it struck me that many of the children in Dalmarnock living with all the bad boys I remember from my own youth with none of the good bits.

I’d really love the games to regenerate Dalmarnock. However it was only chosen as it was a relatively cheap site with little in the way of organised resistance.

Some of the stats for that area are shocking. 2/3 of children in single parent households. 15 yr old males have a 50% chance of living to 65yrs.

Land purchased for £44k in 1988 sold in 2008 for £5.4m….

The programme was emotional for me to watch.

  4. the long wait is over on

    Ronny Deila?

Never heard of him and so he must be rubbish and I don’t want him to be our manager type person.

  8. The Green Man on

This is my formula for recent shenanigans.

DD: Man U fan, wants his hero RK

PL: Emperor of Celtic(Celtic fan), does not want RK on his patch, as he knows he will be toast.

DD: DD not wanting to spend money on a team he doesn’t support, bows before a Celtic Businessman/Board revolt.

PL: Emperor Peter transforms into St Peter/Louis XXXl,and claims the credit for a new forward looking strategy.

    DD: Plays golf

    Bhoys now we are talking!!!!

I dont know much about Deila but I like the cut of Paul67’s jib which is something I have been banging on about since the Strachan days.

We are very much moving in the direction I have been desperate for us to to.

The Coyles, Mackays etc are all good managers, good candidates and would no doubt do well for us – but they would be offering more of the same.

More of the same mundane football within rigid formations which finds blanket defences very difficult to beat with the only space offered down the flanks resulting in umpteen crosses.

We need someone to teach us how to play within fluid football systems – crucially without losing our defensive discipline.

Say to footballers go out there and if you see space move in to it, would lead to organised chaos with guys running willy nilly here there and everywhere (and those less keen on the defensive aspects choosing runs which would take them out of that equation).

It needs to be taught, it needs to be coached and as Paul said students of the modern game are the ones to open the doors into a brand new brand of football.

The brand of football which will slice blanket defences with that beautiful pass – the most difficult to play but the killer pass when its accurate, which causes chaos and panic amongst defences all too at ease waiting for crossed balls to arrive in to the box – the one through the middle.

The one which has been abandoned by the previous (ill not worry about counting Tony Mowbray because none of us knows what he was at!) 2 managers in WGS and NFL.

  14. Oh! .. Ah Furgoat..

Egil Olsen did a poor job at Wimbledon 15 years ago means Ronny Deila would do a bad job at Celtic now????

    Bizarre jump in logic there……

  18. According to wiki Ronny Deila’s middle names are William Boyne.
