SPFL Sky TV deal realities

424

The proposed new deal the Guardian report Sky TV and the SPFL are close to agreeing would see a modest uptick of £2m per season to £29.5m.

For that, Sky can broadcast 60 games each year, instead of the current 48 games. Each club would also be able to sell five pay per view (PPV) games.

The analysts I have read is universally hostile. The deal does not compare favourably with similar sized European countries, the average cost per broadcast game drops and there is little account for inflation.

The analysis is also mostly lazy as our misses the point. Scottish football TV audiences are all about two tribes. Viewing figures become noticeable only when they meet.

Oh for an AZ Alkmaar, to bring drama to Celtic games from midtable.

The SPFL sell TV rights in an open and competitive market. It is absurd to bemoan the deal and not recognise the harsh fact that it was better than all others on offer.

It’s all clubs take up their five PPV options, some will be playing to a TV audience of hundreds, perhaps dozens.

Not posted for a while but reading back this place gone downhill rapidly.

Hard to find any posts about Celtic……

Anyway, tough one as it always is at the Ayrshire huns but our skill and superior fitness will prevail.

Good luck to the good guys.

  2. Tom McLaughlin on

There is not one artificial surface in the entire J-League divisions 1 and 2.

What must our Japanese players think when they come to Scotland, one of the wettest and greenest countries in Europe, and find themselves strutting their stuff on dry, sticky artificial grass?

  3. On the Isle of Skye. Can’t get the coffee maker to work.

Radio for the game today it seems as we do some sightseeing. See a few of you next Sunday!

    HH!

  4. Couple of articles doing the rounds this morning from the boss and Jenz…

Postecoglou will be taking Celtic to Kilmarnock and admits he would rather not be playing on plastic.

But the Hoops boss also won’t let anyone use the surface as an excuse.

He said: “Do I like them? No. They change the game.

“Do I think the top league should have them? Preferably not.

“But I understand why they are there and while they are there you just have to deal with them.

“As much the artificial pitches try to replicate what happens on a grass pitch, it’s a different game.

“That’s my preference. I don’t like them, I don’t think it’s as good a spectacle for the fans, which is the ultimate business we are in.

MORITZ JENZ has revealed he already wants to stay at Celtic permanently.

The German defender could partner Cameron Carter-Vickers when the Hoops take on Kilmarnock.

Jenz wants to follow in his pal’s footsteps and turn a successful loan into a permanent move.

Celtic negotiated a buy option with Lorient when they signed the 23-year-old last month.

Jenz made a scoring debut against Ross County last weekend and has seen enough to want a long-term stay after just one appearance.

He said: “My goals are to win and help Celtic achieve as many targets as possible.

“Personally, I want to play consistently on a high level and improve as a player.

“I also want to be a part of Celtic for the long-term.

“I know Cameron did something similar last season with the loan. Our style is perfect for me and I’m really happy here.

“We have to develop step by step and hopefully that will get me to my highest level.

“The last week has been good. It was good to score my first goal last weekend and also to help us win the second game.

“But it was back to working hard. We need to keep producing these good performances.”

Jenz’s header in Dingwall sparked wild scenes of celebration as he was mobbed by fans behind the goal.

Ref Don Robertson opted not to flash a second yellow card — but the German won’t take any risks if he scores again today.

He said: “I have been warned to take care!

“Last week was pure joy, pure emotion when I ran into the crowd. This time, if I have the chance to score the goal I will be more settled.

“If I’m honest, I didn’t think about the consequences because it was pure joy.

Jenz hit it off with Carter-Vickers at County last weekend and would love to continue that partnership in the coming weeks.

But he’s taking nothing for granted, with the likes of Carl Starfelt, Stephen Welsh and Christopher Jullien also battling for a start.

He said: “It was great playing with Cameron and a fantastic start. Obviously we have been training together but that was our first time on the park.

“We have a good relationship, he is a fantastic guy and I really enjoyed playing with him.

“Let’s see what happens in the long term.

“We have a lot of good centre-backs and that type of competition is normal at a big club.

“It’s good for me, it’s good for my team-mates to keep pushing ourselves and going to our limits.

“That will make us better as a team and individuals.

“It’s the perfect way for the centre-backs we have at the club and it suits the whole team.”

Jenz will get his first taste of the Premiership’s plastic surfaces if he gets the nod against Killie.

But the German isn’t fazed by that prospect and insists Celtic will know exactly what to expect at Rugby Park.

He said: “We have prepared on plastic. It’s obviously a different surface, more sticky and difficult.

“But we have to get used to it and make sure we play our game on Sunday.

“Obviously we don’t play on these surfaces every week so it is quite unusual for the team.

“It’s not the same as grass where the ball runs much smoother when it’s wet.

“It’s more bobbly because of the granules on the field.

Jenz played a key role as Celtic finally broke down Ross County last Saturday to take all three points. The Staggies made life difficult for Postecoglou’s men but he was impressed with their refusal to panic.

Jenz added: “Of course we expect Kilmarnock to be difficult, to be very defensive and try to hit us on the counter.

“But we will play our game like we always do.

“We will be patient, we will play attacking football and we will put a lot of pressure on them and try to take our chances.

“Patience will be so important. It was the same last week and we will need it in every game.

“We will have a lot of the ball but we must take our time and be clinical when the scoring chances come our way.”

Jenz admits it would be a dream to get his first taste of Champions League football.

The group stage draw takes place on Thursday, August 25, in Turkey, with all the big guns lying in wait for Celts.

Jenz said: “That’s something everyone is looking forward to.

“This is a massive football club and it deserves to be in the Champions League. Celtic belongs there and I think everyone is looking forward to those nights.”

  5. Think we may see some tweaks in the team today,

Hart, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Jenz, Taylor, McGregor, Mooy, O’Riley, Abada, Giakoumakis, Jota would be my guess…

  6. Hoping our strength in depth and talent pays dividends today……………..

Today we must defeat the playing conditions, a scoddish defence and a huned-up whistler probably still enjoyin’ his teams result on saturday.

That’s about the size of it.

    HHH.

Please do something about them as the joy from the blog is rapidly diminishing.

I hope the Ref has noted that unless he is in on the plan,

Think we will need to see CCV & his partner. I’m guessing Moritz making breaks & carrying the ball deep into Killie territory,

Operation stop Celtic in full media swing the supporters sense it, having never seen a game of football on that pitch it’s openly anti football verse the beautiful game.

  21. Celtic B bounced back from a goal down to seal all three points in an impressive 4-1 victory over Gretna FC 2008 in the Lowland League.

An own goal and strikes from Bruno Davidson, Tsoanelo Letsosa and Matthew Anderson sealed a solid win for the young Bhoys in a dominant display.

It was far from an ideal start for the Celts as inside the second minute they found themselves behind.

Straight from kick-off, Gretna kept hold of possession and some nice one-touch football found Russell Currie inside the area. Under pressure from Dylan Corr, the striker fell to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot and Currie stroked the spot-kick into the top right corner.

The hosts were in buoyant mood after that goal and almost doubled their lead on 10 minutes, Currie again was picked out but he could only head wide from 10 yards.

That certainly seemed to spark the Bhoys into action as they began to threaten in the search for an equaliser, with Mackenzie Carse going close on 18 minutes but his effort from a Davidson cutback was just cleared before it could cross the line.

With the temperature reaching 30 degrees in Gretna, the players had the chance for a water break on 22 minutes and for the coaches, it provided an opportunity to provide some instructions.

When the game restarted the Celts were dominant, with Rocco Vata slamming a freekick against the bar on 30 minutes and then Davidson forcing Jack Main into a fine stop four minutes after.

But on 38 minutes, Main couldn’t deny the Celts as Davidson sent a teasing ball across goal and under pressure from Rocco Vata, the Gretna defender bundled the ball over the line to level the scores.

As half-time approached, the Gretna keeper was kept busy as he had to produce stops to keep out efforts from Vata and Tsoanelo Letsosa.

After conceding early in the first half, it was the Celts’ turn to score early in the second half, as Davidson got the second on 49 minutes.

Great play down the left-wing set up Matthew Anderson who sent in a low cross that evaded everyone bar Davidson, who snuck in at the back post to tap home from close range.

Carse was keeping Main in the Gretna goals busy, having a couple of efforts saved by the keeper before the 60th-minute mark, when Celtic made three changes to try and push for the crucial third goal.

They almost had it on 75 minutes as Letsosa raced down the right and played the ball across for the substitute Ben Quinn but the Gretna defender just got a toe in to clear the ball away for a corner when it looked certain to be a third.

With nine minutes left, Davidson thought he had his second in almost a carbon copy of his goal, as he raced into the far post to meet a cross from the left, this time the keeper just got back to clear off the line.

Then with three minutes to go, the Celts got their third, as Letsosa scored an absolute screamer, smashing an effort into the top right corner from 25 yards.

The action wasn’t over though as with the last kick of the game, Anderson smashed home a shot into the bottom right corner from the left of the area to seal a perfect afternoon’s work.

GRETNA FC 2008: Main, Moyles, Muir, Dickinson, Teviotdale, Caves, Mbewe (Helm), Carmichael, Currie (Bell), Fraser (Munro), Spelman (Short).

Last weekend’s victory came thanks to goals from Kyogo, debut Bhoy, Moritz Jenz and substitute, Liel Abada with each of those three goals being provided with an assist by Jota.

Now, away from the madness of Scotland and Scottish football, you think he’d get some respite from the idiots of the day. Unfortunately not! The former Celtic hero occupies their head space so much someone has gone down to Fleetwood Town, pretended to pose for a picture with him then shouted ‘we are the people, no surrender’. It’s embarrassingly cringey.
