SPFL Sky TV deal realities

424

The proposed new deal the Guardian report Sky TV and the SPFL are close to agreeing would see a modest uptick of £2m per season to £29.5m.

For that, Sky can broadcast 60 games each year, instead of the current 48 games. Each club would also be able to sell five pay per view (PPV) games.

The analysts I have read is universally hostile. The deal does not compare favourably with similar sized European countries, the average cost per broadcast game drops and there is little account for inflation.

The analysis is also mostly lazy as our misses the point. Scottish football TV audiences are all about two tribes. Viewing figures become noticeable only when they meet.

Oh for an AZ Alkmaar, to bring drama to Celtic games from midtable.

The SPFL sell TV rights in an open and competitive market. It is absurd to bemoan the deal and not recognise the harsh fact that it was better than all others on offer.

It’s all clubs take up their five PPV options, some will be playing to a TV audience of hundreds, perhaps dozens.

Took me back to listening to Pathe News at the Cinema..

    :-)

  2. Turkeybhoy – I was thinking of the Harry Enfield/ Paul Whitehouse paridy of the pathe news stuff. Even before that, as an early 70’s born kid, watching the celtic centenary video over and over again I loved all the footage and clipped RP accented commentary on the 7-1 game and the like.

    Still makes me laugh.

And I thought football was an entertainment,no wonder only a few go to watch them.

  5. Now that I’m thinking of it I can recall to this day watching the Celtic Story on VHS in the early 1980s quite vividly. A family member had bought a video recorder and got a hold of the tape. I was absolutely mesmerised. Funny to think that it was less than 20 years since we’d win the big cup but young me felt like it was another era entirely as I watched that footage.

Strangely I got the history DVD when it came out a few years back and I’ve never watched it all the way through.

With the benefit of hindsight, the Chamberlain deal played a big part in winning the war as it gave the British a year to prepare.

I don’t know if Dane Murray has recovered from injury but I’m keen to see how he develops. Vata looks a decent prospect and is a very direct player. The reality is though, we have a young guy who isn’t that much older, who has had a brilliant first season for us (yet some moan about him). Step forward Liel Abada.

Maybe you can report back on the game.

Agreed. He’s often portrayed in a less than favourable light. There’s a good book (now a film) called Munic: The edge of war, that sees him in a more favourable light. Well worth a read and watch.

Not so Churchill the hero, who has quite a chequered past.

  14. Off to Vale park soon – think there will be a few water breaks. Absolutely scorching -already 30 Deg C in the shade

  15. Am I correct in thinking that when we play Sevco in September, that will be the first time this season that they have not kicked off before us?

I would;d have thought there is an advantage of sorts to be gained if your only real rivals are always playing catch up.

  16. Appeasers @ everywhere

Cannot believe all the NC luv chat on here / on a Saturday.

Couple of crap books and 6 years of suffering can be forgotten about.

The UK currently reeks of WW2 fetishism — and how too many take it all in.

WC was a journalist who eventually got lucky — waved a flag while others did the hard work.

NC was an absolute nobody who slithered his way to the top — totally out his depth when the going got tough leading a Treasury dominated government who thought they could run the RAF / RN and keep AH in his box.

WW2 for the Uk was a total disaster until the US got involved and the SU counter-attacked at Stalingrad.

Up until then it was failure after failure showing up a country that still hadn’t recovered after 1918.

NC was a huge part of that.

  17. Is 12-4 (agg.) really a record defeat for a Scottish side in Europe?

I want to make sure I am correct if I bring it up in `converstion` :-))

S##t. Didn’t realise this fixture has come so early in the season- Could have had a catch up.

Attended same fixture last year. Young Brooks (Adam?) was the standout in a 3-3 draw. Ben Wylie also very good but he’s now on loan at Airdrie. Dawson also useful but needed to bulk up a bit.

Really pi$$ed I’ve missed this. Will have to check when they go to Dalbeattie. 😡

  22. Sky news had all of the SPFL fixtures listed as ‘tomorrow’ when I was watching it this morning. Thought that was odd do I checked.

All games bar ours and Hearts v DUFC are on today.

Sky. Utterly useless when it comes to Scottish football.

  23. SS and AT

Thanks but I knew the scores and the opposition but I didn`t/don`t know if it is a record aggregate defeat for a Scottish team. Is it?

  24. And another thing, has the BBC recently shown any of our Euro qualifiers, of which there have been many? Both Dundee Utd matches on BBC Scotland and BBCi Player, the second of which opens up the potential viewing audience. Or did Premier Sports, in the immortal words of Alan Sugar (double agent) “blow them out the water”? BBC Scotland are broadcasting Hearts away tie at FC Zurich, Thurs August 17 1800 BST. Again will be on BBCi Player. They will almost certainly show the home tie the following week if Hearts are in with a shout to qualify for the Europa League. Given that CQN has often served as a conduit for Peter Lawwell maybe Paul67 could inform us, enlighten us even, as to whether there have been any recent, or fairly recent talks, discussions and or negotiations re Celtic Euro qualifiers. Or at least inform us of the criteria being applied when Celtic partner Premier Sports, eg potential audience reach (BBC) against cash money (Premier)

Or is it just that we are unable “to recognise the harsh fact that (Premier Sports bid) it was better than all others on offer” (Paul67).

  25. SS

    Thanks.

Let the interjections occur every time a Hun mentions the Dundee Utd score.

I don`t thinks so but I also don`t recall them showning any Sevco games either. Have they?

  27. ‘Killie seek Celtic scalp ‘ – BBC : I’m probably being paranoid but wtf is that heading about when we play them tomorrow

(geog question – we are in an anticylone at the moment which makes high pressure cos the air sinks! The air sinks so clouds/rain aren’t formed! Ok but why does the air sink? Can’t find any internet bampots to explain this).
