Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

Neil Doncaster on Celtic’s dominance, Rangers colts and cross-border leagues

    The Herald: Scott Mullen

As the SPFL season finally came to an end on Sunday with Hamilton Academical saving their Premiership status, we spoke to league chief executive Neil Doncaster.

In this exclusive interview, Doncaster delves into the past 12 months including Celtic’s dominance, Rangers withdrawing from the development league and the prospect of joining forces with our nations in the future.

What are your thoughts on the season in not just the Premiership but throughout the leagues?

My own feeling is that it has been a very positive season across all Ladbrokes leagues, with a great many highlights, talking points and unprecedented successes. When the SPFL was formed in 2013 one of the founding principles was for a fairer distribution of income across the leagues and all 42 clubs working more closely together for the greater good.

It is to the credit of all clubs that they were willing to do so and the evidence is of generally increased competitiveness across all four leagues each season, perhaps most notably in the Ladbrokes Championship thanks to the Premiership play-offs.

That attendances are on the increase year on year and clubs are benefitting from larger TV and commercial payments than ever before can only help the future success of our leagues and clubs. So, yes, it has been a very positive season and we’re already looking forward to next.

    What has been your highlight?

There are so many you can pick from and it’s very natural to gravitate towards the top league.

For Celtic to have won a domestic treble, a rarer achievement than many would believe, especially coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the club’s greatest ever success can only be deemed very special.

However, this has been a memorable season for many clubs. Celtic, Hibernian, Livingston and Arbroath won the four Ladbrokes league titles, with Celtic adding the Betfred Cup and Scottish Cup for the treble.

Brechin City and Forfar Athletic enjoyed promotion via the play-offs while Hamilton Academical and Cowdenbeath survived. Aberdeen enjoyed a record points total and two cup finals.

Dundee United won the IRN-BRU Cup. Rangers sealed a return to European football and St Johnstone have done so yet again. Partick Thistle made the top six of the Ladbrokes Premiership for the first time and Ross County won the Development League.

Personally, taking the Ladbrokes League 2 trophy by helicopter to sunny Forthbank to be presented to Arbroath after their final day title success in front of 1,000 travelling fans left a real impression and reminder of how much Scottish football means to so many people across the country. It was a great day for Dick Campbell.

Equally, seeing Dundee United fan and amputee footballer Tommy McKay scoring his half-time goal at Tannadice and then being awarded the SPFL’s Ladbrokes Goal of the Month again showed the positive power of football.

Has Rangers being back in the top flight improved the product?

If by product you mean how the Scottish game is viewed by those on the outside looking in then having Hearts, Rangers and, from next season, Hibernian back in the Ladbrokes Premiership after their respective absences from Scottish top flight football has been very well received by other clubs, by TV audiences and by our commercial partners and sponsors. So, yes!

Does it damage the product by Celtic being so far in front?

Clearly every league in the world would love a title race going down to the final day – the reality is that doesn’t happen that often.

That Celtic enjoyed such remarkable and unprecedented consistency in this season’s Ladbrokes Premiership has received deserved recognition and even an acknowledgement from their own first team manager that it may never happen again.

While it is not for me to comment on the individual performances of clubs, it is also widely recognised that the current Celtic management team and players have set higher standards than we have seen in Scotland for some time.

Aberdeen have provided the strongest challenge in recent years including this and as they and other clubs strive to meet the high standards set by this season’s Ladbrokes Premiership champions we would hope that in the long run that would benefit the standards of those clubs, the league and the wider game.

Do you think it is a good thing for our if this domination continues?

If a longstanding involvement in football has taught me one thing it is never to make predictions! Let’s wait and see what next season brings and hope that Scottish football enjoys another memorable season including more success for our clubs participating in European competition.

What are your thoughts on the Rangers colts dropping out of the SPFL Development league next season?

I think it is very much something to file under “one to watch”. It is certainly an interesting initiative. And one which was supported by other clubs. We look forward to hearing back from the club about the positives – and any negatives – of the experience this time next year. We can then factor any learnings into our plans for the Development League from season 2018/19.

Will this potentially open the door for cross-border competition?

It is broadly agreed across the European game that cross-border competitions are likely to form a key part of the footballing landscape over the coming years. Therefore, any initiative that strengthens the links between clubs, leagues and associations in different countries, particularly across the UK, should be welcomed.

Any changes to the structures of leagues, particularly those as dramatic as a cross-border league competition, take years to put together. And the necessary building blocks of any such competition are strong relationships, trust and mutual respect between those who would compete together in this brave new world.

Whilst not a direct stepping stone to a cross-border British league, initiatives like this do clearly help to enhance and strengthen relationships between key players in the British football industry.

You have spoken before about Scotland being part of the landscape in this respect. Now this season is at an end, where is this vision now?

The desire to strengthen relationships between the footballing bodies across the British Isles is one of the main reasons why the recent changes to the IRN-BRU Cup are so important to the strategic development of the SPFL.

These changes, which have seen teams from Northern Ireland and Wales enter the competition alongside colt teams from the Ladbrokes Premiership, have been driven by the SPFL partly for this purpose.

Through our membership of the Association of European Professional Football Leagues (“EPFL”) and our clubs’ involvement with the European Clubs Association (“ECA”), we are already very much part of the European footballing landscape and are well-positioned for when cross-border European league competitions become a reality.

Is it something you have had conversations with other associations about? If so what can you tell us?

Iain Blair (SPFL Company Secretary) and I regularly meet with our counterparts across the European leagues. While it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to approach directly the associations in other countries, the recent discussions around a potential transnational European cup competition, led by the Scottish FA, demonstrate that leagues and associations can and do work together for the benefit of the game across Europe.

Is this something you want/feel Scottish football would be better for if they did embrace it?

Albert Einstein once said that “the measure of intelligence is the ability to change”. Over the past four years, SPFL clubs have demonstrated time and again their intelligence and awareness of the need for progressive change.

That intelligence and flexibility has seen a merger of the leagues in 2013 to create the Premiership play-offs and a pyramid for the professional game, a total overhaul of the Betfred Cup (including the ‘summer football’ group stage in July, bonus point penalty shootouts, and the return to a pre-Christmas final) and significant changes to the IRN-BRU Cup, summarised above.

It is vital that the famous, historic football clubs that make up Scottish football continue to embrace positive change. I am confident that they will do so.

  2. A Stor Mha Chroi on

Kris Commons: “I have no regrets from my time at Celtic at all. I’ve done it all. It’s been unbelievable.”

    The Herald: Matthew Lindsay

IT has been, even by their own high standards, an exceptional season for Celtic. But for one man at Parkhead in these past 10 months there has only been disappointment and frustration.

Kris Commons, who has left the Glasgow club after his contract expired, hasn’t played a single first team game for Brendan Rodgers’s side during the 2016/17 campaign.

He had to look on from the sidelines as his fellow players qualified for the Champions League group stages, won the Betfred Cup, Ladbrokes Premiership and William Hill Scottish Cup and went 47 games undefeated domestically.

It hasn’t been easy for a man who was previously an automatic starter.

Commons has, though, enjoyed more than his fair share of memorable moments in the six and a half years he has spent in the East End.

Celtic have made a few outstanding signings in recent years – including Henrik Larsson (£650,000 from Feyenoord), Lubomir Moravcik (£300,000 from Duisburg) and Moussa Dembele (£500,000 from Fulham).

But very few of their acquisitions have provided such value for money as the attacking midfielder who cost them just £300,000 from Derby County back at the start of 2011.

The former Scotland internationalist has helped them win one League Cup, two Scottish Cups and five Scottish titles as well as defeat Barcelona make it through to the last 16 of Europe’s premier club competition. What is more, he has done it in some style.

The warm send-off he received from a sell-out crowd after the Celtic Charity Foundation match between “Henrik’s Heroes” and “Lubo’s Legends” underlined the huge affection and high regard he is held in by supporters.

“There are so many highlight,” he said. “My debut, my first goal, my Old Firm debut, beating Barcelona, Champions League last 16.

“If anyone came to this club with boxes to tick, I’ve done them all – apart from the treble. And it doesn’t rankle with me that I didn’t do it this year. I enjoyed it more as a fan – I got to drink!

“It’s been six years of pure emotion. I loved the Shakhter game (the Champions League qualifier against Karagandy in 2013). I scored and I’d never felt so much drive to get the ball out of the net and restart the game. I wouldn’t say I felt invincible but it was a case of ‘Let’s go’. That win and the way we did it was astonishing.

“There have been more highs than lows. There are so many experiences. You probably don’t realise how high the highs are until you see them back.

“Some of the biggest highs came under Neil Lennon. He used to say to us, these will be the best days of your lives. Looking back, did we appreciate the highs and how good the team was?

“In the grand scheme of things, there have been some unbelievable achievements. I can say to myself, ‘I had a good run at it’. It’s been the best period of my career.

“I was naive before I came to Celtic. I thought I was a player. Then I came here, saw the scale and size of the club and realised what it meant. It was a complete learning curve coming to Celtic.

“You see big clubs around England but Celtic is above and beyond anything I’ve felt for any other club. I hit the ground running from the moment I walked through the door and it’s been a magical journey.”

Commons added: “These last 12 months have been the most frustrating of my career in a playing sense. I had a good stint of training between October and December, went on loan to Hibs and then I started feeling my back when I returned.

“That’s been the frustrating thing. I’ve not been able to get to a top level of football. But actually being behind the scenes at Celtic, watching what the boys have been doing on the park, has filled the void.

“I have not been fit enough to play but it’s been a fitting end with the last two weeks. It’s been magical. You had the Lisbon Lions’ anniversary, the Invincible Premiership season and then us winning the treble.

“To then be able to grace Celtic Park for the last time with real legends of this club on Sunday was a fitting end.

“It has been emotional. Being at Celtic has been the biggest part of my professional life. If you leave this place and don’t get tearful, you need a slap around the ear.

“All my family has been brought up Celtic. My kids are dressed in Celtic 24 hours a day. It’s farewell on the playing side but I will always have an attachment to this club now. Hopefully I will be remembered for my playing days but maybe in the future, other things will come that will eclipse that.”

Commons had looked set to sign for Rangers back in 2011 – then manager Walter Smith made an enquiry about his availability – but he stressed that Celtic was always his preferred option.

“There were always rumours about that and Rangers certainly made a call,” he said. “But I knew Neil Lennon. We’d played together at Nottingham Forest and I also knew Kelvin Wilson was coming after me.

“Everything was geared up for me joining Celtic. If Man United had phoned me, I’d still have signed for Celtic. There was always this, ‘It was one or the other between Celtic and Rangers’ but I knew I was coming here.

“I don’t look back and have regrets. I lived every single day the same. It’s gone so quickly. Do I regret turning up for training late? Do I regret a few tantrums? I don’t know.

“In the grand scheme of things, my Celtic career has been a memorable journey. The fans might forget my goals next season but the memories that have been created will live with me until the day I die.”

Despite not featuring under Rodgers this season, Commons has been impressed with how the former Swansea City and Liverpool manager has transformed the fortunes of Celtic this season and predicted a bright future lies ahead under the Irishman’s guidance.

“Brendan has brought English Premier League knowledge to the Scottish Premiership,” he said. “People have a philosophy and talk a good game, but Brendan implements that on the training ground. He does that through his players, training methods and through his staff.

“Off the pitch, he’s changed everything – sports science, the kitchen, the gym, the dressing room. He is a man who came in here to flip this club upside down and do what he did this year.

“It’s probably come round a bit quick for him. He wouldn’t have expected to go unbeaten and win the treble in his first 12 months. But it has catapulted him to legendary status.”

Kris Commons has attained much the same level of greatness.

I hope 25 years from now Celtic fans will remember and commemorate the achievements of the Lions.

As far as trying to downplay our fantastic invincible treble, remember where we were at this time last year.

Compare how the near similar squad performed this season.

Contrast the style of play we endured last season.

I had hoped the treble joy would see us through the close season and the wilderness of signing rumours and MSM speculation and jubilation over Sevco expressing interest in an unknown washed up has been they can’t afford.

If he succeeds in turning around or counteracting the constant wave of anti Celtic sniping then he may prove useful.

He has a very long way to go to make up for his Old Firmist role at SSB.

Perhaps he could – or should – start here on some of the glass totally empty sorts who’d try to drain joy from your life like air from a balloon.

Yesterday we had a guy who’s been a star all season, scored on Saturday and is a contracted player being denigrated because West Brom had looked at him.

‘He’s not as good as he thinks he is…..one season glas in the pan…..’

While others were preparing to welcome back KT one day at the latter stages of his career. Ffs did you see the Rocky footage of him sprinting up the Hampden stairs???

That Moonbeams chap this morning deserves a right good kick up the erchie!! ;-)

‘I see Ernie has been getting pelters for saying that Lisbon has been a monkey on our backs for years?’

    ###

I said it was a monkey on the back of the players, not the fans.

It’s quite clear. I’m not sure how anyone could misunderstand what I said.

‘Hopefully for next season we can let the whole Lisbon thing recede just a wee bit. It’s become a ghost haunting current squads. A monkey on their back.’

  18. ERNIE LYNCH

Have you got any evidence from the players or the manager that suggest that Lisbon was a monkey on their backs this season or would it be way to speculative of me to suggest that the 50 anniversary was an inspiration to all at Celtic?

  19. Lightning…

Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge that occurs during a thunderstorm. This discharge occurs between electrically charged regions of a cloud (called intra-cloud lightning or IC), between two clouds (CC lightning), or between a cloud and the ground (CG lightning)

Or What happens when you give the ball to Australian Tom Rogic in the 92nd minute of a Scottish cup final to complete a historic undefeated Treble.

    Tom ‘lightning bolt’ Rogic.

  20. Jimmynotpaul on

    Ernie.

I of the opinion that the Lions have been an inspiration for this current squad.

It has spurred them on to an invincible treble and whilst that is not comparable to winning the big cup, nonetheless the current buoys have made their own history and yet they realise progressing in Europe is the next stage.

Pleasure making your acquaintance last week, mate. A great time to do so too.

Your membership to The Clique has been approved unanimously.

    Congratulations!!!

The first time I remarked that I had never met a knobend on a CQN dayoooot,MICKTT-who asked the question-said it was a statistical improbability.

He found out I was right at CQN10,and a fair few times since.

I reckon the improbability is explained by the knobends not turning up!

Jim McGuiness was walking round CP with the under age and development squads so he is still involved with developing players- not sure how much he does with first team squad members.

He gave a very good description of the Cup Final tactics so it is obvious he can bring his coaching experience to bear on the soccer form of football.

Nice to keep Donegal links going.

My post didn’t reference fans or players.

Anyway,no harm done. I’m not gonna have a pop at someone for saying something thoughtless or inappropriate.

I’m sadly known for that myself. Though I usually grovellingly apologise ASAP then beat myself up for days to save others the bother!

Ernie the Lisbon Lions are the pedestal that all Celtic teams aspire too, yesterday , today, tomorrow. The bhoys from Seville, the inVIncibl3s, wee Gordies last 16’s, the day Glasgow is only Green and White.

I can see why you prefer Being North England to believing in your own destiny. Mon the hoops.

Speaking of CQNers all being right good lads and lasses,so too are the monikers on many occasions.

Thanks for that, mate. Rounded off the week perfectly.
