Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

Was the Barmaid a Blonde Ghirl ?

    If so…eyes aff….she’s mine…………..I feckin wish !

If it was a Blonde Ghirl, I think I have met and spoken to her in The Tolbooth, during a Celtic game a few weeks ago.

She was in the company of about 4 Bhoys, one may have been the bhoyfriend….who was feckin bigger than me and younger………………..but certainly NOT as handsome.

  2. I am as much in the dark about ANY interest in Brendan signing Hayes, but if Paddy doesn’t come back do we really need another winger when we have Mickey Johnstone ?

    Just asking like.

    The way im reading that.

Brendan at start of season i reckon prob told him to shape up, or ship out….like a few others.

Now we hear West Brom etc are looking …prob paper talk, however,….he is far from the finished article, if he thinks he is a English premiership player in one season….sell him.

    HH

  4. If West Brom are interested then it’s them who thinks he his a premiership player surely, not Armstrong. He will, as they all are, be led mostly by his agent por cierto.

  5. Barney 67

He is already mega rich, wages is an obstacle to us signing players but as has been seen with big Moussa it is not impossible to get players who will come and in the future move them on, Rooney is at the end of his career, did not play much for Mourinho, if he is fit motivated and will come here he would run riot and be handy in Europe.

Anyway just me flying a kite

Either way, i dont think he would be missed….he would be replaced by somebody as good, or better.

Rooney? Not exactly a Brendan type player much like Kris Commons. If you can’t press the game and run all day it’s a definite no.

  9. With The Huns being linked with so many Mexican and Portuguese “……ahem….”Players”…they will soon have a team of Catholics.

If/When that happens they could change their name once again to ” Perdo’s Papist Paupers” ?

Maybe time to allow the current squad to make their own.

We all know it will never equal, never mind surpass, what the Lions did, but we can’t live in the past.

It is what you said, I’m quoting you. Even in the wider context of your post that is how it read to me.

Celebrating past achievements is not living in the past, I enjoyed revelling in past glories, but took more joy in achieving an invincible league and ultimately domestic campaign. Or is last week now in the past?

  12. TTR

Yes can see your point, though if old dogs could learn you tricks ? Dont think he wants to go to any PL club

  13. I meant to add….IF THEM signed all those Catholics and they did become Pedros Papist Paupers…………………..They would STILL be The Feckin HUNS !

No updates on Huddersfield v Reading as we were promised yesterday….no matter… I am watching the Dross anyway…..22 DUDS….withoot a clue !

“And let’s be brutally honest. In European terms this season was a failure.”

Your statement is not unequivocally `brutal` and it is certainly not `honest`. It is simply an opinion and one I disagree with at that. If Celtic`s expectations were to qualify from the Group Stages then we failed , if our expectations were to gain points in our Group, then we were successful.

Also, Scottish football is no worse than it has been for the last few seasons and we `failed ` to go undefeated and win the Treble in any of those years so I would be hard pressed to consider the past season as a failure.

I know you said based on European results but that is like saying `based on the four games we drew our season was a failure`. Too selective to be meaningful.

  17. “Let the Lisbon thing go” ?

So we stop singing The Celtic song…” If you know the History”,

We get rid of the Lisbon Lions stand, and Jock Stein stand.

We get rid of Big Jocks statue.

We refrain from jumping on the back of coal lorries,

We destroy anything that reminds us of Lisbon.

We torch ALL the new kit for next season for players and fans alike.

We make sure BAR67 is shut doon.

Armstrong is never Celtic class – when played as a left winger!

Play him as a maurading midfielder and he will quickly become a prince of midfield who’ll be responsible for 50% of the goals that will a secure us a unique invincible treble……mark my words….not that we should be celebrating such humdrumism…..

  20. I imagine SMSM would like Celtic to be interested in Johnny Hayes it suits their agenda.

Truth is, we’re already releasing players of a higher calibre, and as Aberdeen found out just the six times this season we have better fitter players.

Celtic spend the money in the transfer market and that’s what has created the cavernous gap, between us and second best Aberdeen.

^a few years back Jimmy when they had quite a few casey afflecks in their side some of the opposition fans were taunting them with chants of “you’ve merr Catholics than Celtic”.

  25. The time to think about letting Lisbon ” go” is after all of the Lions have passed on to the Lisbon in the sky.

  26. Some on here obviously live on another plant!

We have just won only the fourth treble in our history. We won it going undefeated in nearly 50 domestic matches. The gutter press run a rumour about a player that Brendan has worked with before and some are unhappy!

Surely the manager has won himself the right to be considered a better judge of a player than any on here?

If Hayes or Rooney or whoever is who Brendan wants, then I’ll go with that!

In terms of Europe , qualifying for the CL was a success. The performances against Barca away and some German team at home were disappointing, but given Brendan was hardly in the door, then it would be incredibly harsh to rate the overall campaign a failure given how difficult the group was!

As to gloating or triumphalism, I would say that celebrating a fantastic achievement such as the inVIncible treble it totally justified. It’s not as if we were waving wads of money at the Sheep or whoever, unlike the old deid Huns used to do!

  31. On a Serious Note,

Since the Cup Final on Saturday, I have heard and read one or two Celtic players state that ” Some Celts were nervous in the 1st half”.

Knowing that, and on reflection I think many of us ( Including Myself) tended to forget that possibility BEFORE the match ?

Looking back, it would be no surprise at all that some Celtic players were maybe more nervous than usual at the start given the weight of expectation on their mostly young shoulders ?

i am perfectly happy to to take that aspect into account, as I truly believe that WAS probably the case, and that was just one reason why Aberdeen got a foothold in the game from early on, and built a bit of momentum ?

i have NO reason whatsoever to doubt any Celtic player who has said that ” We were probably a bit nervous at the start”.

I MUST have been on at least some Celtic players minds heading into the game ” What if we lose and we fall at the final hurdle when going for an Historic Treble….how would we be really remembered” ?

So, perhaps we supporters tended to consider that possibility pre match…I know I am Guilty !

Thank God the Bhoys did their stuff !

They will be remembered for ALL the right reasons for years to come.

  32. So, perhaps we supporters tended NOT to consider that possibility pre match…I know I am Guilty !
