Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

My daughter who went to St Tams with Jamie MacAvoy told me that Jamie loves seeing me singing the Jorge Cadete song with Jorge’s sister in Lisbon. Magic :)

  3. Parkheadcumsalford,

He was on the phone during the game and after. He enjoyed watching the game and was saying the Celtic fans were out on the road doing the huddle. It is always wonderful to see your own celebrating no matter where they are, but especially on Saturday.

My son Timbhoy5 and I were talking to a guy from Port Glasgow on the plane from Dublin after coming from Lisbon. It was a pleasure to hear the his Lisbon stories.

Give my best regards to your dad, a gentleman. I hope you record some of his Celtic stories, so valuable.

Delaney’s, it must have been a brilliant feeling being made so welcome by fans of each club.

When we played Benfica in 2006 , i think our fans displayed a banner in honour of a Benfica player who had passed away earlier that year.

I see Ernie has been getting pelters for saying that Lisbon has been a monkey on our backs for years?

Deservedly so,but he’s closer to the truth than he got credit for.

Lisbon put the monkeys on THEIR backs. Eventual outcome-death.

That’s good enough for me. But not why we remember The Lions.

We remember because of the greatness of their achievements.

The Exiled Tim, thanks for posting the Video Celts match report for our under 17’s 3 1 victory at the Sevco training ground.

Beating an Ibrox based club at any level, puts a big smile on my dreary coupon.

To the guys who were over in Lisbon:

Worth watching the BBC full coverage programme on the iPlayer. Some cracking interviews with our captain and manager pre match. Brendan’s post match, Kieran’s triumph and the Celtic support singing Walk on, with no commentary are magic too.

  11. Just downloading some videos and photos from the trip there and a wee laugh came back to me. In Pink St just before the Jorge Cadete song with his sister, I was chatting with BRTH when a shout goes out ‘ man, learn never to drink when you’re wearing open toe sandals! ‘

Sorry if already posted, but it made me laugh anyway. Still don’t know who said it.

Leaving Estadio Nacional on Thursday, BMCUW and I were approached by two intelligent young guys from Lisbon aged about 12. They said that they loved Kolo and Moussa and loved Sporting but also follow Celtic because we wear the same shirt.

Met a Benfica fan aged 87 who told me that he went to Estadio Nacional 25/5/67 to support Rabbie Burns team he thought we were. :)

  14. TEUCHTER ÁR LÁ- I have my little piece of Estadio National home safely my friend, thank you, it was good to meet up and share a few beers

Delaney’s , I hope you corrected the old guy and told him Tommy Burns’ team lol.

Terrific that the young Sporting fans knew about us.

My pals and I ended up in Heraghty’s on Saturday , it was mobbed with very little space in it.

Somehow 4 guys managed to do the Kolo dance .

God night all and sleep well

Celtic’s centenary league win in 1988 was our 35th, Rangers at that date had 38. In my Celtic supporting years, that’s the closest we got to their total. The gap stretched to twelve.

In the twenty seasons since 1997, Celts won 13 Rangers 7 before they went bust, halving the gap to six. I choose not to wait twenty more years to close the gap thanks.

    6IAR!, still six to go.
