Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

Jim McGuiness was walking round CP with the under age and development squads so he is still involved with developing players- not sure how much he does with first team squad members.

He gave a very good description of the Cup Final tactics so it is obvious he can bring his coaching experience to bear on the soccer form of football.

Nice to keep Donegal links going.

Good stuff – I hope he is – great coach.

  2. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

Sevco apparently signing ten new players.

It’s obvious that they are getting money from somewhere, considering they haven’t sold anyone yet.

The season ticket money doesn’t cover the expenditure.

Maybe King or Moonbeams are providing the funding for this, what looks like a final roll of the dice?

Pity the won’t spend a few shillings cleaning up their decrepit, washed-out midden.

  3. Morning all

Read back the blog from yesterday.

The main talking points seem to have followed on from a some posts by Ernie Lynch which to sum up said a) Europe was a failure last season (as we must now think of season 2016/7) b) we play against crappy teams domestically and c) we should ‘rein in’ the celebration of the Lisbon Lions because it hampers the current team. If I have misrepresented you Ernie apologies but I do not think I have,

However other than point a) I am not sure I am in disagreement with much that he says. Obviously as we are not playing in the final this coming Saturday our Champions League campaign can be looked on as a failure and no campaign that contains a defeat to a team from Gibraltar, our worst score in an individual match in 79 years and a really careless loss at home to Borussia Moenchangladbach can be looked on as an unqualified success but in comparison with our three previous Champions League campaigns it can be looked on as an improvement- we did not even qualify for the competition proper in the previous 2 seasons whilst in 2013/4 we ended the group stages looking a much worse team than when we started- the performances against Milan in Glasgow and in the Camp Nou were as pathetic as anything I saw Celtic produce in Europe ever whereas in 2016/7 we played well in 4 of the group games I thought ( exceptionally well in 2 in fact). When we went of the Cup we looked a better team than at the start of the campaign and I do not think that is failure. If we were to replicate the 2016/7’s campaign next season then I think we would be entitled to look on that as failure because expectations have been raised though.

As for our achievements culminating in Saturday’s triumph It would be hard to deny that the opposition we play on a week to week basis in Scotland is often poor but twas ever thus – Aberdeen probably has its best team in 25 years and at times St Johnstone looked okay whilst Hearts under Neilson looked not a bad side but most of the rest of the teams really were bad. But a lot of the teams were bad in the MON and WGS eras whilst Big Jock’s nine -in-a-row teams had to play part time teams like East Fife, Arbroath, Dumbarton, Cowdenbeath and Stirling Albion- teams that rarely rose above the ‘make up the numbers’ category. Ernie is right to bemoan the quality of the opponent we now face but it was never that good anyway though it certainly was better in the sixties and briefly in the early to mid 80s.

As for Ernie’s comments re the LIons I do have a measure of sympathy- and I say this as one who is wanting to get over to Lisbon next year and who has the team’s famous walk on to the pitch in Lisbon as his screensaver. We should remember that team forever but it is an uncomfortable to think that it is also a long time ago since that night and that we have not won another European trophy since. I don’t know though that I think the Lisbon success is any kind of millstone round the current team’s collective neck – it did not seem to me to be in the season just finished I must add- but if the commemoration of the Lions continues with the same level of intensity into next season it might. But it won’t. The 20th, 25th, 30th and 40th anniversaries passed and we got on with things afterwards and I don’t see this anniversary being any different, things will calm down naturally. I hope that happens – and I would like to think that is what Ernie was on about. Forget the Lions though? No chance.

Anyway enough of second guessing Ernesto.

Seems the Legends match on Sunday was a total success.

How could it not be,I suppose?

Was Johann Mjallby playing, cos I think he could still do a job for us,even now.

    Sign him,Brendan!

I remember he took out that other elbows thug,McCulloch, who hid for the rest of the game. He would delight in doing the same to Stockley.

Nice big chap that you are, I will assume the `crackers` was a positive description of my additions to VFR`s dictionary rather than an assessment of my character.

Off on the bike now for what I once considered a tough route. After reading daily updates of the Lisbon Bhoys fantastic achievement, this seem s like downhill with the wind behind.

the feelings are mutual, just sorry i wasn’t able to spend more time in the company of such good people. As i said earlier, without exception, open, friendly and welcoming – genuinely nice people, irrespective of the common bond we have.

The only clique in here is the people who say there is a clique overtime they post, you know the ones, that can’t even be happy when Celtic win the treble and vomit the same shite on the blog season after season year after year but then you know that if you’ve been lurking’ long enough..

  17. Someone has been pumping money into that mob for over 5 years , keeping them afloat . No worries, for us , as long as Brendan sets his sights on building a team for Europe , (up here will look after itself ) if he improves the positions that he could improve on , and doesn’t make do with what he has , thinking they are good enough to take on the diners at the big table . If the board see what a gem they have in BR , and support his plans ,then we may well do something in Europe . But , and its a big but . We have all seen our suits dilly dally and miss out on targets wanted by our managers , if BR has the sole control of team matters , then on his request , no stone should be left unturned to deliver .

  18. The prosecution in the Whyte trail “rest their case”. They were due to call one more witness but seem to have abandoned that.
