Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

  1. Ernie Lynch,

I have to hand it you, you certainly know how to stimulate debate.

Would love to sit down and have a conversation with you over a beer or two. Fancy coming to Lisbon next year to celebrate the First Anniversary of the Fiftieth Anniversary celebrations in that great City ?

    :-)

P.S. don’t stop doing what you do ;-)

    ok…

    Runners up.

Not sure that changes the question…

A sclaf shot away from eliminating the Germans on their own patch…

If that is failure what is the definition of success?

    You are Solid.

And most of the time you are right.

Europe is the reason Brendan is here…. not 10 in a row. ;))

A wise decision play to your strengths I always say.

  5. Qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League (after to two previous failures) at a time when Champions League prize money had increased, thus enabling Celtic to record its highest ever revenue resulting in profit that is then being spent on improvement of the team and club is a success.

In Europe, qualification for the CL group stages was the objective. That objective was achieved. Therefore, there was no failure.

  6. Jimmynotpaul on

My opinion, Europe was a success this season. When Brendan took over, for me, his remit was to win the league and qualify for The Champions League group stages. He succeeded. This was progress from previous seasons. We were handed an incredibly difficult group, where a lot predicted/ wished 0 points.

Domestically just superb. Are we the first club to do an invincible treble? That tells you that no matter the standard, it’s an incredible thing to achieve.

Next season, qualify for the Champions League group stages, hope for a kinder draw and progress.

    Big Cup Winners.

I believe the one target that wasn’t achieved was to concede less than 20 goals in the league. Where you successful in obtaining a ticket?

    Today we are still invincible.

    Hail Hail to all.

Johnny Hayes I’m not understanding the negatively.

He’s a proven SPFL player who, in my opinion, is better than GMS.

If he’s replacing him magic, if he’s replacing Paddy Roberts then not so magic.

    Hail Hail

You can only beat what is put in front of you, from that perspective it has been an unprescidented success.

Compare and contrast to how Murray approached the same challenge

That was very kind of you sir! I’m rarely in Bar 67 these days and most of the staff have changed over that time.

Not sure if theres any truth in the rumours but not a bad player to have around, puts some real quality into the box thats hard to defend against, and as you say, streets ahead of GMS.

Gould have GMS over Hayes every day of the week.

Thought Shinnie was their stand out player.

  15. Jimmynotpaul, yes Hayes is a proven SPFL player. But is that what you want us to be/remain?

A big fish in a small pond? BR is certainly more ambitious, we are making a name for ourselves in Europe, we can attract ambitious young players who admittedly, may see us as a stepping stone to the big bucks of the EPL. So do we really need an average SPFL player?

  16. mike in toronto on

another one …. sometimes he frustrated me on the pitch (could be a bit selfish)… but, when we went through a spell when we seemed a bit afraid to shoot, he wasn’t afraid to take responsibility and step up … …. as a result, he won us a lot of trophies …. and what he and his wife have done off the park…. up there with the best we have had ….. and, even now, as he is leaving, nothing but good things to say …

so, he had one bad night, and some people cant get past it … I get that, but, on the other hand, which one of us hasn’t had a bad night? …. we all have them ….

so, if he goes, he goes with my thanks and best wishes …,

  17. What is the Stars on

Qualifying for Champions League group stages is a success..anything after that is a bonus

Winning the league is a success..anything after that is a bonus

Therefore I would say Celtic had a rather successful season in 2016/2017

Winning a treble and remaining unbeaten domestically all season is beyond any realistic expectations

But having done it….I suppose we will want more

  18. Being a pragmatist, I am of the firm opinion that no matter who the player is , if he doesn’t want to be with Celtic, then thanks and goodbye. We only want players who WANT to play for our beloved club, end of.

With regards Hayes, the guy is pretty good, but too slow I feel for our type of game, but what do I know.

    Happy holidays to all

I meant to add…Some years ago I worked with and became friends with Alfie Conn. Alfie would always say to everyone ( including me)….” Once a Ranger…always a Ranger”

*Interesting Jimmy considering his da was a jambo legend, one of their famous “terrible trio”, but also no surprised, he did a stint in the louden, he was also out here for their convention which was also some anniversary of the lavvy cup, he and the other ex-players marched down River Road in Windsor behind a flute bawn.

NEVER hear about him at Celtic events or even discussing the club, seems tae have erased that fae his mind. No like the wee trackie seller who goes tae games over there when he’s back in the country, I know our support would hunt him, just like the TO area clubs did over here when he was with TFC, but what’s up with Firhill, falkirk or tynecastle, he played there tae, why the bigot dome where he was equally hated by some of their support.

Now while I was delighted when we signed him in retrospect alfie didnae play for us, he played for the Big Mhan and Big Billy got rid of him tout suite when he took over.

  20. Jimmynotpaul on

    Barney67.14.59.

Of course, I don’t. As I said, in my opinion Hayes is better than GMS, who has never had the mental strength to be a top Celtic player, so as if suspected GMS leaves and we replace him with Hayes, in my opinion we have strengthened our squad. As I also said if he is replacing Paddy Roberts, not so magic, as this would weaken our squad.

    Hail Hail

  22. The Rangers are irrelevant in context to what both clubs aims and financial status, however their fans are the same and that’s what makes it sweet when we do the treble and maul them 5-1 home and way.

Though I do believe our fans, green brigade included, should no longer sing any songs which references them por cierto.
