Spirit of 67 reached out and touched us

431

As the excitement of Saturday begins to fade perspective begins to dawn. If Hollywood scripted homage to Lisbon, this was it. The stage was set 50 years and two days after the event for a truly unique, inVIncible, treble.

In ’67, Celtic came from behind. In 2017, they did the same. In ’67, Inter tired as a relentless Celtic pressed for the winner, just as Aberdeen did on Saturday. You and me have left Hampden after many cup wins, but I don’t remember as elated a crowd as Saturday’s. It was as though the Spirit of ’67 reached out and touched us.

Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic will compete with each other, and with new faces, for the precious central midfield roles next season, but both delivered big time on Saturday. It you watch Stuart’s goal, it had a touch of the Tommy Gemmell’s about it, with Shay Logan turning side-on, just as the nearest Inter defender to Tommy did.

“Don’t let him get onto his left”, is surely what every defender says when facing Tom Rogic. In particular, every Aberdeen defender. The big Aussie is so potent with his left foot. But we all need a second option in life, and Tom’s is the confidence and ability to take a chance on his right.

Stuart and Tom will both improve next season. Think about that.

In European terms it was a failure.

In Scottish terms it was a success. It’s just that given how bad Scottish football is that’s maybe not as great an accolade as it once was.

Football wise , perspective you have in spades.

Europe is the only game in town.

    Brendan agrees.

    Others can please themselves.

  5. Ernie, a failure, in whose perspective?

From mine it was a success, qualifying for the groups was the success, in the group we landed in any points were a bonus.

This season was a resounding success, nothing less than that.

Quite a few of us watched the cup final in the bar of the Hotel owned by Christiano Ronaldo — The CR7.

Kickinthenakas became the bar DJ for most of the day and the management took a photo of us and sent it by text to Ronaldo who responded with a congratulations message addressed to “The Bhoys” and ordered the staff to provide us with a round of drinks on him.

  8. Good afternoon CQN, finally catching up after the most incredible, wonderful 5 days in Lisbon with my daughter J. How difficult is it to write something eloquent after BRTH has already said it all? ;)

A huge thank you to BRTH for his organisation of the whole tour and to Cowiebhoy for his arranging of smooth passage, also for the company of Mrs CB and himself. It was great to meet so many CQN’rs both familiar and new friends of this wonderful community that resides here on this blog, all of them genuine, decent like minded people, full of humour, laughter and Celticness. My daughter was amazed and overwhelmed by the whole experience, rating it better than our Seville trip all those years ago. In addition to all of those Lurkers that we met, get posting!! The whole experience will live long in the memory of both J and myself, so again thank you to all involved

Celtic have simply outgrown Scottish football, partly because Scottish football is currently so dire.

That is hardly a controversial view.

So success, real success, can only be judged on the European stage.

I can’t imagine that any Celtic fan would disagree with that view.

    ===============

Not the view but the timing.

poor bhoy desperate to be with the fans and team mates

mustn’t have realised it means nothing because it wasn’t in European competition

I’m off out bhoys before I get put off the blog

Diplomacy is not a strong trait for me

One thing I can post is

if success of a football team where measured by how happy they make their fans feel

this fan can categorically say “my team have been very very successful this season”

Had a great night Saturday with two great Tims in Brisbane.

Finally got to bed sometime after 3 am. Next day I had to drive back to Hervey Bay (3 1/2 hrs)

    definitely well worth the effort.

Roll on next season. Will the “deid” mob still be around?

Melbourne Mick and Paddymacoz, I will be in Melb (Mornington) until Sunday. Might catch you at the Bay

  15. For me the games against Man City were our best last season. Forget about the huns, they are an irrelevance.

The quality of the opposition matters. The peanuts our opponents in Scotland get from TV is appalling. They do not have our fanbase to keep them going. Apart from one who, after being given a clean slate 5 years ago, yet still cant balance the books.

We are lucky to be in this position. But Europe is where its at in terms of competition.

If we progress through the qualifiers, lets hope the draw is a little kinder this year.

    ###

    That’s another thing.

The huns are now utterly irrelevant as far as Celtic are concerned.

They have been consigned to history, and what’s left is just pathetic.

Celtic fans have to accept that, hard though it appears to be for some.

  17. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

Well played, Celtic season 2016/17. More fun than ’88, less emotional than ’98 and that second half monsoon took me back to ’82.

Happy to put away the party-hats now and think about surviving six qualifying games. As things stand, we’re two spots from being a pot 3 pick, should we succeed. Any two bottle-crashers from Seville, Napoli, Dynamo Kiev, Ajax, Olympiakos or Liverpool and we’re there. Couldn’t be more straight forward.

Rolling on to 2017/18. Here we go, 7IAR!. Still five to go.

  27. We got £60.000 for winning the SC. How much of the gate money do we get?

Its scandalous. Filling the SFAs coffers. Match sold around the world.

  28. European ‘Failure’

We qualified for the champions league group stages – within our capacity to do so

We were a pot 4 team and expected to finish last in the group

We drew the champions of England the Spanish runner up and a top 4 German team, the 3 strongest leagues in Europe. Probably the most attacking pro-football team in the world.

We held the English Champions and were never behind to them at any point.

We made £30m+ to reinvest in the team.

If that’s failure, I’m wondering what you would have regarded as success…
