Sports Direct with humiliating control

1208

Records published by the Intellectual Property Office yesterday show Sports Direct own quite a lot of trademarks, including:

Rangers
Scope of trademark: organisation of sporting activities.
This property has not been licenced to the football club, or joint ventures like Rangers Retail Ltd.  Sports Direct own the rights to call a football team Rangers.

Rangers (again)
Scope: from clothing to trinkets and everything in between.
Owned by Sports Direct, licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd

Glasgow Rangers Football Club
Scope: clothes trinkets, etc.
Owned by Sports Direct, licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd

RFC, Broxi Bear, The Gers, Follow Follow, Ibrox, Rangers News, Rangers Travel and all the crests, badges and logos are all owned by Sports Direct and licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd, which is 76% owned by the Sports Direct group.

So if the club want to call themselves Rangers, or Glasgow Rangers, they need to cut a deal with Mike Ashley.  The most humiliating aspect of the whole thing is that the new board appeared to know nothing about this until the Intellectual Property Office published the details yesterday.  The lack of due diligence is breathtaking.

The only things Ashley seems to have ignored is that pejorative nickname they complain about so much, and the phrase Murray Park, although he has security over the training ground of that name.

We warned them repeatedly.  Ashley was in control and had the opportunity to ensure he got what he wanted before the EGM.  One of the richest men in Europe, he is a formidable opponent and known to be utterly ruthless.

You can’t bully him.  Better to recognise this reality and accept your subservient future than create a scenario where even another liquidation event would not free the ‘Rangers’ football brand from the ironclad yolk of a man you’ve made your enemy.

What have the lemmings done to themselves?  We were told Mike Ashley was a business man and he would acquiesce as this was just business.  In the history of business miscalculations this is up there with the guy at Pye who rejected The Beatles.

It’s all their own work, they can’t blame the SFA, SPL, SFL, Celtic, Her Majesty’s Revenue’, the BBC or Craig Whyte.  A recovery which would have been difficult enough is now completely and predictably wrecked.

Fancy a trip to Dublin for the Ireland-Scotland game in June?  There’s a bus leaving Glasgow with Ireland and Scotland (but all Celtic) fans.  Two nights in a Dublin hotel, travel and match ticket among the Ireland fans for £200.  Let me know if you’re interested, celticquicknews@gmail.com

    10 April 2015

    From the section South Scotland

A football fan has been banned from attending matches for a year after he set off a flare during Queen of the South’s clash with Rangers.

Liam Bernard, 17, from Coalburn, in South Lanarkshire, was also fined £350 at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

He admitted culpably and recklessly igniting a smoke emitting flare, placing other supporters at risk of injury at Palmerston Park in Dumfries.

The incident happened towards the end of the first half of Thursday’s match.

The sentence was welcomed by Stephen Ferguson, football liaison prosecutor for the west of Scotland.

He said: “Liam Bernard acted with complete disregard for the safety of other fans.

“Thanks to the swift action of the security staff, police and prosecutors, he has been brought to justice and less than 24 hours since the incident has found himself banned from all UK football matches for the next year.”

Now let me speculate a little had it been Celtic rather than Sevco…..

Celtic fan Liam Bernard banned after lighting flare

    • 10 April 2015

    • From the sectionSouth Scotland

A Celtic fan has been banned from attending matches for a year after he set off a flare during Celtic’s stunning 3 – 0 loss to Queen of the South.

Liam Bernard, 17, a life-long Celtic fan from Coalburn, in South Lanarkshire, was also fined £3500 at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

He admitted culpably and recklessly igniting a smoke emitting flare, placing other supporters at risk of injury at Palmerston Park in Dumfries.

The incident, the latest in a series of similar events which have resulted in multiple fines by UEFA, happened towards the end of the first half of Thursday’s match when the visitors were losing by 1 – 0 .

The sentence was welcomed by Stephen Ferguson, football liaison prosecutor for the west of Scotland.

He said: “Liam Bernard acted with complete disregard for the safety of other fans.

“Thanks to the swift action of the security staff, police and prosecutors, he has been brought to justice and less than 24 hours since the incident has found himself banned from all UK football matches for the next 50 years.”

  5. My point being, in the BBC report, there is actually no clear identification of the allegiance of the young man who let off the flare.

Now had it been a Celtic fan……?

  6. Keeping The Faith on

First of our 2 games against the cally, don’t wont any of this which would you rather win kwap.

Intresting team selection ahead me thinks, with our highlanders oot next week, think wee jamsie might be rested today and maybe Kris on the bench.

Anyway 2 wins celtic against the cally is what’s needed ( and before you all start I know we are playing mid week ) :-)

I wasn’t on last night so just saw posts about the raffle. If it’s ok with you we’ll just give you money next time I see you. Well done my friend a great gesture from a top man.

    Right, Inverness awaits.

  10. Firstly and tbh I’m not a great fan of statues.

However that said, its brilliant that Cesar is to be commemorated.

Billy was, is and always will be my great hero.

I note the statue is to be formed by the same artist who created Big Jocks image.

I have to admit although I like the pose of the statue I find the head a somewhat poor representation of the Big Man. Guess I should don my tin hat for saying such?

IMO Brother Walfrids edifice is more subtly crafted suggesting a more refined quality of craftsmanship. Or craftswomanship :-)

Anyway the important thing is the honour which is fantastic, well deserved and entirely appropriate. Congratulations Billy!

PS…where will it be placed … a realignment of the other icons?

  11. Skipper Scott Brown returns to the Celtic squad after suspension for the trip to Inverness in the Scottish Premiership on today.

The Scotland captain missed the 2-0 win over Partick on Wednesday night after going through the disciplinary points barrier.

Midfielder Charlie Mulgrew (hamstring tendon) and right-back Mikael Lustig (ankle) are still out.

Inverness boss John Hughes has no fresh injury worries.

The match will act as a dress rehearsal for next week’s William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park.

Long-term absentee Richie Foran (knee) remains on the sidelines.

    Teams

Inverness (from): Esson, Raven, Shinnie, Warren, Meekings, Tremarco, Ross, Draper, Polworth, Christie, Williams, Tansey, Devine, Doran, Vincent, Ofere, Kink, Horner, Sutherland, Brill.

I’m sure their great minds will be thinking of a way to prevent such. They always do. For example,

“Johnston said: “At some point in time it may be that the only answer is to get as close as you can to what has not been passed on to Ashley and basically get the fan base committed to follow that.

“I don’t mean a new badge entirely but to get as close as you can get to it without trespassing on what Ashley thinks he’s got the rights to.

“I do a lot of trademarking, logo and licences around the world. It really depends on the registration and the tolerance of the authorities with respect to the time of the tenure and the territories involved”

A few bhoys have said they will pass me cash at the corner ( on gonna look like a real corner bhoy ) and I will tie up with winning captains to ensure anything over the original cost is donated to Mary’s meals .

    Morning to all CQN

Looking forward to the lunch time kick off today .. Probably go along to the PV in Blantyre to watch it with their most famous son of CQN renown .

Only problemo . I’m a tad superstitious and it’s not a lucky pub for me :(

Here’s a wee point about CQN that I touched on yesterday

Do you all consider yourselves part of this site – im sure most of you do ?

So are we members of CQN or merely posters / bloggers / internet bampots ?

I would consider myself a member ( suppose that’s pauls decision to make ) and I know this has been floated before but as a member I would be happy to pay a small annual membership fee as I know it would be used for good causes in the real traditions of club and CQN .

Before anyone tells me money is tight and times are hard – I do appreciate that and have no issues with it being voluntary . But although I post and lurk less now than in years gone by I still spend a lot of time here and in my mind I have no issues paying for that.

I don’t expect a rush of volunteers to pay and as I said before it’s really Paul’s shout if he would even want it . So maybe just have a wee think about it today ( when buying overpriced beer / spirits / fags / gambling etc )

Need to go now as spilled my whisky on my betting slip and have ran out of regal ;))
