Standing up for your views, San Siro

658

Another day another Uefa fine for crowd-related transgressions, the umpteenth in recent years.  When we went to Seville we knew you could take tens of thousands of Celtic fans anywhere, secure in the knowledge they would make friends with police and locals alike.  That reputation’s gone, the Fifa and Uefa awards, relics.

The world appears to have its share of Pussy Rebels.  Someone who will tarnish another’s reputation (in this case Celtic) but not have sufficient courage in their convictions (in this case their right to break Uefa rules) that they will do so in their own name, accepting consequences accordingly.

The internet is full of them too, keyboard hard men who will carry a campaign to the ends of the earth, as long as it doesn’t leave a trace of identifying information.  If their name gets out, they will run 100m in the opposite direction of their declared stance, faster than Usain Bolt at am Olympic final.  Pussy Rebels, every one of them.  Lots of people have crazy/offensive/just plain wrong views, but manage to put their names to them – nutcases, but Tiger Rebels.

If you have a view, or way you like to enjoy a game of football, stand up for it.

The incidents in Zagreb pale into insignificance compared to the mini-bus attack which left a child injured before the League Cup semi-final.  That wasn’t a rule transgression, it was proper violence.

A few days after the incident I wrote I was concerned there had been no arrest.  Despite the overwhelming outrage among Celtic fans and others, and the damage done to the victim, the reward money is still unclaimed.  Do the proper thing, report the crime and claim your reward.  We have a reputation worth putting your name to.

Not sure how things will go (on the field) tomorrow night.  Celtic have an incredible record in the San Siro over 90 minutes, four draws and I think only a couple of defeats?  A win would see us into the last 16, it’s a huge ask, but don’t bet against Ronny.

Farewell James Easdale, we’ve loved your work.

My thanks to Andy Coyle.  Don’t know him from Adam, but he called me out of the blue, met outside Celtic Park, and put £100 in my hand for our Mary’s Meals appeal.  God bless the Celtic support.

On the subject of which, you know you’re dealing with someone special when you learn Lisa Hague, Kris Commons partner, bought a ticket for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner.  She’ll be helping out too, more on that later.  After the dinner we have Packy Bonnar, Joe Miller, Tommy Coyne and the one-and-only Tom Boyd, with Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein and Patricia Ferns on song.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

The attack on the mini-bus, where the young boy was hurt appears to be in some way football related, but that does not mean that the assailant was a Celtic supporter, though he may have been. We will not know until someone is actually convicted of the attack. Some reports suggest the attacker may have been wearing a green jacket, but if there is a more detailed description of the guy, I must admit I have not seen it. You are right of to be wary of press “reports” in view of the case you mentioned, an attempt by the Daily Record to create a story to match their editorial line. A low even for that rag.

No matter where you are in the Rutherglen or East Kilbride area, you are never more than 15ft away from a spider at any given time.

It used to be said that wherever you are, you’re never more than 12 feet away from a rat. Rutherglen and East Kilbride are the exceptions because of the giant rat-eating spiders which flourish there.

Who in their right mind would take a flare into a football stadium, then set it off ?

Apart from the fact that it could endanger someone’s life, it will cost the club dearly and not only financially but could deprive decent Celtic fans the chance to support the team if a ban was put in place. Half wits, hell bent on causing trouble.

To quote a great Celtic fan

” Hanging is too good for them, it’s a hard kick on the arse they need “

  5. Canamalar,

Why do you persist in claiming that Celtic has always had a political element, as if that political element was only of the far left tendency? That has never been the case in my opinion, and certainly not from the beginning. Not one of the founding fathers would ascribe to that notion.

  6. Beatbhoy…….braw …great minds etc etc etc….wis thinking that and then there wis so many wee dick posts….na better no … put the young cat among the Doos…. :)

You’ll need to show me where I mentioned the left, I thought I was clear about Irish emancipation.

  8. what a ridiculous contradiction this whole situ is – A fan , who happens to be in the celtic end of the support , lets off a flare. Celtic get fines and reputation tarnished by UEFA. What can Celtic really do from preventing this from ever happening again ? seriously !! i could get a ticket to any european game involving any team – let off a flare and they would be punished.

On the other hand , sevco fans CONSISTENTLY in their tens of thousands sing bigoted songs and absolutely nothing is done – The rangers board don’t even come out and openly condemn and deem the singing socially unacceptable.

not looking for a response – just venting.

I listened to SSB and Radio scotland repeat shows – SSB swept it under the carpet , but to be fair to radio scotland – they had a director from one of the football clubs on and he was scathing of the the process , governance and lack of courage to move it forward – hopefully this is the start of something fresh – i don’t hold my breath as long as doncaster and regain (where the fk has he been???) is at the helm.

make no mistake – when the fist comes down , it will come down on the old firm – not the blue bigots!

There’s a picture in the Scotsman with the idiot standing proud holding the flare.

He should be invited to Celtic Park, handed the bill for the clubs 10,000 Euros fine and a banning order.

    ———–

That was my first thought. Surely it wouldn’t be too hard to identify the guy?

Celtic should put it in the terms and conditions of ticket purchases, that any ticket holder found to be engaging in illegal activities, is liable for any sanctions imposed on the club.

In the case of flares, I think they look awesome, but there is no doubt they pose a danger to those in the vicinity, and there is no doubt there use will harm the club. I think a 10000 euro fine to the individual(s) responsible, would make them think twice about doing it again.

For songs, the only way to get them to stop is points deductions. 1 point for a 1st offence, then double it for every offence thereafter. Losing a title on that basis would quickly clean up the songbooks.

But while the attention is rightly on the orcs right now, the spotlight will inevitably fall on us. If we don’t ditch the IRA songs, we will always leave ourselves exposed to whataboutery. They’re not sung at Republic of Ireland national games, they shouldn’t be sung at Celtic games.

That said, it is disgraceful that Radio Clyde allowed a caller to go unchallenged when stating ‘some Hibs fans had an IRA flag’, referring to the Irish national flag. It was even more appalling that the same caller equated the Irish national anthem(cringeworthy though the add ons are) with a song about wading up to their knees in fenian blood, celebrating a fascist thug and founder of the Glasgow branch of the Ku Klux Klan.

Look at how the orcs are reacting at the 1st semblance of a challenge, then picture their reaction when Aberdeen take 5 off them. With the English media starting to take notice, we cannot give them the ammunition to drag us into the conversation.

British Transport Police have released photos of 7 men they want to question about alleged racist chanting after Chelsea’s CL match in Paris last week.

Some of the stuff in that video is mental

How is it that flares are so commonplace in Europe to become something of a spectacle or an event in themselves as part of the pre match build up. Some countries seem to cater for it from the scale of some of these displays. Then other countries under the same governing body appear to turn a blind eye. Others ban them.

It is a craze/fad/phenomenon, call it what you like. It goes on regardless, legal or illegal.

If they are to be banned then that is absolutely fine by me. But you can’t have a situation where it is ok on a Saturday under national rules but illegal in international or European games. Where it is ignored or allowed in one country but not another. Where fines are sporadic and fluctuate wildly when applied.

Have one rule for all, apply it universally. Then there is no perception of favouritism or victimisation.

Could even do the same with songs!

It doesn’t happen like that of course and that’s where the problems start. Not when some guy wants to copy what he sees happening abroad, when it happens to such an extent as in the above link.

It is far too easy an option to call the people who want what they see above ‘wee dicks’ as if they are not real football supporters. I would argue that they see such behaviour elsewhere and think ‘that looks spectacular, I want some of that for my team’ Whether you agree with them or not, whether they are misguided or not, doesn’t make them ‘wee dicks’ as Sandman likes to label them.

The fact that the rules are not applied evenly or consistently is an issue. The fact Celtic seem to roll over every time they fall foul of these inconsistencies is another issue.

Wee dicks are the least of the problem

  16. I believe most of these smoke devcices are not flares in that they do not burn or produce a hot flame. So they are not a danger in that respect . The smoke bomb is a party device that I assume is relatively safe . The smoke the produced will surely have undergone H&S tests .

If uefa say no then we dont use them but they are not as dangerous as some are saying. I was at the pre-season game against Rapid in Vienna . The was hundreds of smoke devices going off all round the stadium. The smoke was so thick you couldnt see across the pitch. The Austrian fans didnt seem to be troubled by them.

Is that the reason we’ve been fined?

What you’re asking is for Uefa to take overall control of all the leagues and insist that they abide by a set of pan-European stadium rules, which may be added to but not subtracted from by the local governing body.

There’s some merit in that idea. For consistency if nothing else.

thank you for contacting BT Sport about the issue of sectarian chanting. We appreciate you taking the time to get in touch with us.

We recognise that inappropriate behaviour by fans at live sporting events has the potential to cause offence. We try to prevent this by, for example, adjusting microphone settings so that offensive chants are less likely to be fully audible. We did this for the Raith Rovers v Rangers game on Friday evening.

We need to strike a balance between putting in place this kind of measure and ensuring that home viewers can feel the atmosphere of the game they’re watching. We’ve reviewed our broadcast of the Raith Rovers v Rangers match and don’t believe offensive chanting was easily discernible by most viewers.

Nevertheless, we do take on board your views and shall continue to pay close attention to this matter for future broadcasts. We’ve made clear that as an organisation we won’t tolerate racism or sectarianism.

    Best wishes

So teams from Turkey , for example, don’t get fined for flares, cause they are used at league games every week ?

Galatasaray have been fined 50,000 euros and told to contact Arsenal to ‘settle damages’ within 30 days after crowd disturbances during the Gunners’ recent 4-1 Champions League win at Emirates Stadium.

The match was marred by a five-minute spell in the first-half when some of the 3,000 contingent of Turkish fans threw flares on to the pitch and exploded firecrackers in the stands.

Referee Gianluca Rocchi was forced to halt the match while the flares were extinguished, and only a personal plea from Galatasaray captain Wesley Sneijder and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera quelled the disturbances.

According to widespread reports, the Metropolitan Police made six arrests during the Group D Champions League clash, two of which were for entering the ground with flares.

UEFA responded to the disturbances by fining Galatasaray 50,000 euros while they have also been told to pay for the damage inflicted in the away section at Emirates Stadium.

The Turkish club’s supporters’ left two rows of seats ‘collapsed’ and 2,800 seats loose while further damage was reported in the toilet facilities.

Must say I detest flares anyway, regardless of who is playing, and any Celtic fan who continues to use them should be banned.
