Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

Correct. And this was inevitable. Let’s hope Roy Greenslade wants to hear more.

Ernie. That’s right, but the key thing is that a link between Assange and Charlotte will shine a much bigger spotlight on all of this. If you had made the link or I, it would be bampots bumping gums, but if Roy Greenslade makes it, it’s different.

    To the Tune of Clementine

Poor King George he was a sick man, resting on his royal bed

And the Doctors couldn’t cure him, and feared he would soon be dead

Suddenly a brilliant notion flashed into the Doctor’s mind

What he needs is bracing sea air of that chilly Bognor kind

    CHORUS:

Bugger Bognor, bugger Bognor, bugger Bognor says the King

You’ll never get me back to Butlins, no I’ll never do that thing

The diagnosis it was fatal, Bognor was the final straw

Would he last until the morning? Would he see the sun no more?

The Royal Physician knowing protocol, saw quite clear where duty lay

Dispatched the King a trifle early to catch the Times the following day

The Royal Train it was prepared, for that trip down to the coast

But before he could commence it, poor King George gave up the ghost

So if you wondered why proud Bognor added Regis to it’s name

‘Tis because the King of England died at mention of the same

  4. Norwich City have confirmed the signing of Celtic striker Gary Hooper.

The 25-year-old has agreed a three-year contract with the Premier League club, who have the option of keeping him for a further year.

Hooper, who was also wanted by Queens Park Rangers, scored 31 goals for the Scottish champions last season.

He has been Celtic’s leading goalscorer for the last three seasons, having joined from Scunthorpe United in 2010 for £2.4m.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon today described Hooper as the club’s best striker since Henrik Larsson and said his departure was a “huge loss”.

    More to follow.

  5. G69?

I only pointed out that celtic had an outing there a few years ago.

I haven’t played there or anywhere for a couple of years unfortunately.

I am assuming pod I is now a member.

  6. Hoop Hoop and away – Hooper leaves the building

    From Celtic FC

GARY Hooper today completed a move to Norwich City. The striker has joined the English Premier League side on a three-year deal, with Norwich having an option on a further year.

  7. I wasn`t at all sad to see Victor go; I am very disappointed to see Hooper leave. We won`t miss Vic that much, we will miss Gary Hooper who improved tremendously whilst with us. I expect him to shine at Norwich.

Roy Greenslade clearly thinks the material is genuine, or that enough of it is genuine enough to be “acutely embarrassing” for the former editor of a mainstream tabloid.

The interesting bit will be if Charlotte can convince Mr Greenslade that the data protection concerns people have raised are not so great as to justify the lack of writing about what the leaks allege. If Greenslade wants to hear more and then reveal more, it will get “acutely embarrassing” for a number of people.

  9. I’m more disappointed to lose Wanyama than Hooper.

Since January Hooper heart aint been it.

Cracking striker, good luck to him.

I imagine his memory of Operation Cyclops will have made him very wary of people bearing evidence re hush hush scandals.

  17. Pity Hooper has gone, but how do you keep someone who has his heart set on a move to play in the EPL?

He will be on £30-40K a week and since he was in the last year of his contract better to take the 5 Mio and try to find another gem.

i can see where you are coming from, but there are several reasons how a persons seat can be broken and it nothing to do with them.

Have had personal experience of this at the barca game last season when they guy behind me came over the top of my seat due to the jumping frenzy after Tony Watt scored. To save himself from falling he put his foot out to try to stabilise himself. unfortunately missed the back of my seat, so fell onto my seat itselfand his weight saw him crack half of the seat.

By your “remedy” not only would I have had to pay for the seat, but i would be banned and my season ticket (had since the Jungle’s Last Stand) would be handed back.

Through no fault of my own.

Additionally as Canamalar stated there are plenty occasions where people rather than wait in the Q to go down the stairs to the exits, jump over the seats.

Bit harsh to be punished for that also.

    HAIL! HAIL!

I would advocate an appeal as my section 103 North Stand is pretty sleepy , apart from one guy who hates Big George.

I am sure that the club management have the common sense and savvy to work out a random seat breakage in a sea of unbroken seats from a cluster of 131 broken seats where the rules are being broken by a bunch of wet behind the ears kids.

I have never seen a seat broken in 103 and as I exit the ground going towards the Celtic end as I carefully step over the seats (as you allude to) heading downwards taking care not to screw up my fellow supporters enjoyment by breaking their seats. I have never seen a seat broken in any of these sections ……..

I suspect that if the club found my seat broken there would be an outbreak of commonsense and I would indeed survive my draconian proposals.

Any suggestions on how you stop immature young men breaking seats?

Yes, most probably. But Charlotte seems confident she can convince them. And then what? It is the ‘silly season’ after all, when less mainstream stories do get covered.

  23. Hooper best striker since Henrik Larsson according to Neil lennon. A mammoth task to find someone to fill Hooper’s boots and I doubt we can get a guy who can pump 30 goals for a couple of million. A big test for our scouting team.

Looking like the rest of the squad will have to chip in with the goals ’til we unearth another nugget.

  27. Not disapointed to lose either of them. If they do not want to play for Celtic then it is oot the door pronto for as much cash as we can generate from their sale. The very sad fact is that will be our immediated future. Young players with ‘potential’ signing for Celtic in the hope of being picked up by a championship or lower EPL team a couple of seasons later. Players these days care little for prestige or medals it is all about reaching the riches of the EPL and Championship.

For all the hype regarding Vic and Hoops the only teams insterested enough to make an offer werer lower EPL relegation fodder. Somewhat indicative of how the top clubs view our squad and scottish football in general.

  28. ekbhoy,

When 666 became the SPFL Number

Souness1The re-branding of the leagues in Scotland (I believe they changed one letter) saw the ugly side of the game rear it’s head for the first time in a while.

Quite what the thought process of the SPFL was, when they came up with the idea of getting Graeme Souness to promote their gig, is beyond me but it was akin to Gleneagles getting Paul Gascoigne to front their new image.

The gasps when the beast of Ibrox emerged as the poster boy for the new SPFL were so loud that even the new Celtic stadium announcer was telling folk to simmer down.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane shall we? Souness came into Scottish football and sent out a clear message of what we could all expect from day one, he assaulted George McCluskey and was sent off in his first game.

He quickly established the culture of players pulling out of international squads, particularly Scotland, with no apparent injury to the point where someone who had had a distinguished Scotland career like himself quickly heard a song start around 1987 from Scotland fans “Graeme Souness, you’re a traitor”

Of course, Souness was at the right hand of David Murray when the pair decided to destroy Scottish football for a generation and create a climate where the game was completely unsustainable.

Leaving aside his multitude of other sins (selling a story of him and his new girlfriend to The Sun on the anniversary of Hillsborough is a particular stand out), the very notion of a key component of the downfall of Scottish football now creating a state of amnesia among the PR folk of the SPFL would be laughable if it wasn’t so true.

As we strive for a modern, progressive game in this country we shouldn’t be looking anywhere near Jurassic Park for someone to embody that, should we?

One good thing came out it though, Souness would be at Hampden for the press conference and this would give the Scottish mainstream media the chance to really grill him on the fact that he was being paid by Rangers well after he had left the club.

I didn’t watch the press conference but I assume they all jumped in, Woodward and Bernstein style to ask him, right…

There’s also the problem of overcrowding by people who do not hold tickets for that section doing damage, I suppose it would be a good way to get a season ticket for that section though, all you’d need to do is smash up someone’s seat then apply for the vacant place a few weeks later and if the club told you there was no vacant places you could call than liars as you know for a fact one of the seats was broken and the occupant should have been ejected :o)

Hooper best striker since Henrik Larsson according to Neil lennon

    =======

Given how long ago Henke left us is that an admission that our scouting for strikers is p**h poor? Hoops had a decent goal to game ratio and his 20+ a season is the very minimum required but lets be honest Hooper couldn’t lace Henke’s boots.
