Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

Over in my mams this week and noticed a lot of money being spent on replacing Holy familys red ash park with what looks like a 7 a side park surrounded by a running track.

Agree with you that RD should hopefully learn his lesson on commenting on potential signings.

We should only comment when the deal is done.

We need at least another 3 quality signings assuming we keep VVD.

A goalie…. It can concerns me greatly that if CG is injured we may be throwing a young untried laddie in goal.

A left back…. Strong enough to challenge Izzy

A striker…. Hoops would do nicely.

Sevco signing Wilson has the zombies thinking they have one over on us, deluded fools….but hopefully RD will learn from that.

This is the time when Big Pete earns his corn. He has let us down in the past. You are running out of lives Big Mhan.

    Catch up soon :)

  11. Hopefully we will start next year with a fit, Lustig, Mulgrew,Rogic & Henderson in the squad. So far Denayer only loss, we have Boyata in for him so we will have to wait & see how we fare there. We need a left back, a Striker & a back up Keeper, I think we are well covered apart from that. Obviously if we do lose any valuable squad member then our requirements will change.

Interesting odds from Ladbrokes for Celtic qualifying for Champions League proper, 2/1 against.

I think that gives a good reflection on how big the task is for Ronny.

We are 1/12 to beat the Icelandic team at home.

I concur with Burgh and Corkie. Add a midfielder with creativity though. We simply have to navigate our way through these rounds. A class striker is essential.

  14. Sorry bhoys for the bad lanuage, but at times when i make a comment ,im made out a idiot

Haven’t read back, but did anyone notice the late sub for Venezuela against Brazil last night in the Copa America? Our ex-player Miku. He scored with a neat header and almost equalized. Looked very comfortable playing against some of the world’s best.

  16. Captain Beefheart on

Last year was unique. We sacrificed ourselves for the CG crap. We also had a new coach.

Back to Celtic Park. Biton in the side. A new striker. Ronny showing his class. We must do better.

  17. We were set up wrong for European games last year. We were soft in the centre and our defence was hopelessly exposed when the opposition ran at us.

I think the lesson is learned, Brown, Biton and Johansen in front of the back 4, if the back 4 contains a fit Lustig then better again. With that combo we will be very hard to beat in the Qualifiers, and that’s the secret make yourself hard to beat.

Yes you were very kind to give me great instructions on how to behave in Dublin.!! We had a great trip, Kilmainham and Wicklow were the highlights. I didn’t pick up your info for Almore in time to make contact. There was a perfect pub you mentioned. The Palace??? Walked past it twice, pushed the wrong door twice and her indoors in hysterics at my antics to try to force an entry. Gas heaters dangling from the ceiling , a brilliant place and a great (typical) Irish barman. I was not in good health on my return, a minor blip now, so my apologies for not thanking you sooner. Best Western out near Bluebells, was first class and even directed us to the best local bars. Food in Best West was brilliant. Fillet steaks with all the trimmings for 20 euros, ;- we had three of those! Last time I was there was running the Dub marathon about 25 years ago, the place has changed so much, but the music and the craic were fantastic. The downside for me was the 10% attendance at Mass and a priest who looked as if he had been fighting a losing battle for a very long time

Mass. ..yes that’s the way it is now

The church has had its day. They had too much influence for far too long and have a lot to be ashamed of. People have almost completely given up on them.

Different experience for people in Scotland and northern ireland where catholics are in the minority and the church probably played a more genuine role in people’s lives
